@@ta-ng4rv tbh, I think the best way to develop your understanding of English conventions after reading up on them is just to rep out a ton of English convention questions. Also for quantitative evidence, a strat I learned from Erica Metzler's book is to read the passage and the answer choices without looking at the graph at all. A lot of times most of the answer choices don't even correlate with what the question is asking for at all and are meant to distract you with big, complicated words. Obv, if the answer needs something related to the graph, then at that point you'd look at the graph after reading the passage and answers. But at the end of the day, I think the biggest reason I saw improvement in my English score was just cause I did a ton of English questions on Khan Academy.

BRO we are so similar. I'm a junior and I'm currently taking calculus in school. I find myself making silly mistakes on the SAT math section. However, I feel the math section is manageable and I can comfortably get 750+ scores. My problem lies in the reading section. I moved to America last year and I am a slow reader. Please give me tips on how to finish the reading section on time while getting the questions correct. My aim is to get 1460+ score. I'm taking my first SAT on December 2nd so don't have much time.
@emmettfunston Жыл бұрын
I practiced reading faster on everything: street signs, homework problems, books, and the SAT itself. The questions (besides main idea questions) are in order of where they pop up in the passage. I would read the passage and answer questions simultaneously. Answer main idea questions at the end. If you struggle on a problem, skip it. Make sure you get through every passage and answer most of the questions before going back on the hard ones. I would also find out what passages you tend to do better on and do those first. Leave the hard ones for later as they will take more time and if you're going to get those wrong anyways make sure you get all the easy ones right. You don't want to lose points on easy passages because you spent too long on harder ones.

Hi, I want to ask your opinion about my situation. So I’m an junior I took the Psat last year (sophomore year) I got 780 I know it’s bad. but I didn’t practice at all and I didn’t understand the format of the sat , how it works. my goal is to get 1450. I’m debating if I should sign up for December 2 Sat. yet still I would have 30 days to cram through everything. I’m welling to retake on June Dsat but will these books still work for the Dsat as well ? Again thank you for tips and suggestions. (Note: English isn’t my first language (it’s my third language). so sorry if made any grammatical errors).
@emmettfunston Жыл бұрын
No worries about the grammatical errors, you will get better! The digitial SAT still tests the same material as the SAT on paper so I would still suggest using the workbooks. If English is not your first language, you will have to work very hard on the English and grammar sections. Hopefully math is a little bit easier for you, but I would still suggest going through the math textbook. Because English is not your first language, you will want to aim for a perfect score on math to make a 1450 achievable. You have an entire year to get better at the SAT as you are still a junior. I would recommend signing up for the December SAT only to see where you stand as the PSAT is a little different. Definitely go through the workbooks and take many practice SATs on your own to get used to the formatting of the test. I would also suggest reading many books in your case as well. Try to aim for both non-fiction and fiction novels and even newspapers. I would suggest taking the June SAT where you may be able to achieve your goal if you prepare well enough. You will definitely improve, however if you don't hit your target, you still have a few more opportunities your senior year. Anyhow, good luck!

I have personally never taken the DSAT, however my younger brother has been studying for the DSAT using these textbooks. His current single test score is a 1490 with a super score of 1520. I would say the material is still essentially the same and the concepts learned in the books are worth it and will help. I do not know where you are currently at in terms of you current score and goal, however assuming you are aiming for a 1550 or above, I would make sure to complete both books before your exam. Count up the total number of chapters and days between now and the exam. Then, divide these evenly and make sure to stay disciplined and do your allotted chapters to complete both textbooks by the time your exam rolls around. I would also make sure to take practice exams every single Saturday from now on until your exam (online or physical textbook, preferably those that replicate the DSAT). I would also recommend getting a grammar textbook if you do not already have one as grammar and math are the easiest sections to get a perfect score on. Only give yourself room for error on the reading section. Good luck, study hard, and stay consistent!

You are in 11th grade so I am sure you already know how to do the bulk of the math on the SAT. It just takes practice and discipline. You can definitely get a 750+ on math and I would aim for an 800. What about Words in context (vocab) for the reading section? How did you go about learning those words well enough to know what they mean and how to use them in the passages on the SAT?
@emmettfunston3 ай бұрын
I never studied vocabulary specifically. I did encounter many words that I did not know in practice and real exams though. While taking practice exams (take as many as you can), always note unfamiliar words and learn the definition after the exam. This will help you expand your vocabulary as the SAT likes to reuse words. My biggest advice would be to learn how to guess a word's definition by looking at its surrounding context. I always tried to replace words I didn't know with words I did know while still making sense of the passage. When answering vocabulary questions on the SAT, I would reread the sentence with all the other given word choices to see which word makes the most sense within the context of the passage. Some answer choices will simply sound "off" if you replace the sentence with a word.

I have never taken the digital SAT, however it sounds like the content of the exam is the same as the paper sat while being shorter than the paper sat. I would recommend purchasing and actually USING some of the textbooks that I linked in my description. These will help with the every type of question you will see on the SAT along with how to tackle them. With timing, just make sure to keep a steady pace. You do not need to rush yourself, however do not stay on a singular problem for too long. If you are struggling with a problem, skip it and go back later. Also, if you are taking a psat, this does not count towards anything. It is purely practice for you so do not stress too much about it. However, still treat it like a real exam and use it to learn how to navigate the test and how you think you should navigate it in the future. Good luck!

For my first 2 SAT's I was doing Khan Academy (just search Khan Academy SAT, it's free) for about an hour each day. Then, I would try to take a practice SAT every weekend. You can either take these on Khan Academy or buy a book full of practice tests. I personally bought a book to take my practice tests in which I linked in the description. After my second SAT, I bought all the topic specific text books that I linked in the description and studied individual concepts like crazy for about 2 weeks (literally just went through as much of each book as I could in 2 weeks). I only took one practice SAT a couple days before my actual exam and on that I got a 1500. Then I got a 1510 on the real SAT. I never finished those books or the practice tests though. As long as you do well in school, I think finishing those books could easily result in a 1550+ along with taking many practice exams (treat them like the real test). I had many friends that got 1550's and above and they would study around 4 hours a day every day for about 3 months along with taking practice tests every weekend. However, they had the help of tutors and SAT prep classes which I could not afford. Using the textbooks in the description is a much more affordable option, however it requires a lot of self-discipline.

Do you know anything about the ACT?
@emmettfunston Жыл бұрын
I did not take the ACT personally, but I had friends that took the ACT. The ACT tends to be better for people who have a strength in math and sciences while the SAT leans toward reading and writing. I knew people who really struggled on the SAT and then killed it on the ACT. I also understand the ACT is more time constraining, so if you are not a fast test taker I would probably suggest the SAT. I also know the math on the ACT is a little more challenging. Take these into consideration and if the ACT isn't really doing it for you, definitely try taking the SAT. Even without SAT oriented preparation, it is possible that you are naturally better at the SAT's style of testing.

I would definitely buy a book on the DSAT reading section on amazon. I also recommend grammar if you are struggling at all with grammar. You should be able to get 100% of grammar correct.

I might not be able to buy the books can i use the khan academy "course summary" and take some practice tastes, also cani just use the Desmos Calculator instead of buying the graphic Calc.
@emmettfunston3 ай бұрын
Yeah, Desmos is totally fine for the DSAT. Some people do find Khan Academy to be a helpful resource. I found the books to be more helpful personally, but everyone is different. Definitely try Khan Academy and see if you are able to attain your dream score that way. If you are still struggling like I did, I would recommend purchasing some of the books if not all. For example, if you are the weakest in math, purchasing one math subject book could be very helpful to learn specific topics and practice.

Hey bro i am an international student and am preparing for the SAT. I got 1 and a half months until my first attempt. Today i just got results for the practice test i did without even looking at the syllabus and scored 1330 and am planning on following your strategy and tips for a good improvement in scores. Aiming for 1500+ . Have you got any tips for like extra curricular activities and other stuff that will help in the admission process for colleges. Please suggest me. Great video over all..!❤
@emmettfunstonАй бұрын
You can definitely hit a 1500! For extracurriculars, I would first think about what it is you want to do in life and what major would best suit that career path. If it is a very niche major that only a couple schools offer, research those schools individually to see what they like to see in students and base extracurriculars on that. If your major is offered at most colleges, then just gear your extracurriculars toward that field of study (research - can be at a local community college, work/internships - can be at a local company... does not have to be Google, clubs - get leadership and/or even found a club, take courses related to that field at local community college and AP's, projects related to your major - websites/apps for CS majors and make a portfolio or social media account to display these projects, varsity sport - being a recruited athlete is one of the easiest ways to get into a top school if you can, music, volunteer - perhaps start a nonprofit related to your major while showing you are a good person, competitions related to your major - science olympiad... math competitions... hackathons... to earn awards). Conclusion: Do extracurriculars that showcase your interest in a specific field while showing leadership, being a good person, a competitive drive, and initiative/creativity. Good luck!

im in between my junior and senior year right now and am studying, but i just don't know if I'm making progress at all. I got a 1330 on my last sat in march, and I really want to get a 1500+ now. I've been platauing at a 690 reading writing score for like a year, but for math, i just don't know how I can ensure that I am improving. Im lowk mad at myself bc I burned through all the bluebook digital sat practice tests the week before I took it in march. what are some good resources I can use for math other than khan academy to study?
@emmettfunston4 ай бұрын
@@h4n1ah I was at this exact point personally. I exhausted all of the practice tests and khan academy takes out of these practice tests so I was doing repeated problems constantly where I got my 1300’s. I would highly recommend getting a math workbook linked in my description. I used both of these, however I believe the panda series is more preferable amongst people. I would also suggest getting a grammar book depending on how your 690 is divided. I made my younger brother complete the panda grammar book and since then he’s been getting a perfect score on grammar ever since. He has also drastically improved his reading since using a textbook, however I believe reading is more about strategy and approach. For reading you could get away with finding a KZbin video explaining this strategy and approach (or I could make one) and then just keep taking more practice tests. For more practice tests I would recommend purchasing the Princeton Review DSAT prep book. I found Princeton Review exams to be harder than the real exams which prepared me better than college board practice exams.

@@emmettfunston okay okay thank you sm. for the reading and writing section, my grammar has been perfect -- it's the middle questions about "logically completing the text" and other lengthy questions that always make me loose points. i would love if you could make a video about how to approach the questions that have a bulk of information bc those are always overwhelming. i will definitely check out the Princeton book though!

1100 with bare minimum study prep, first time ever doing digital or the SAT in general and got screwed over with time management while missing out on easy questions. There’s another in two weeks but doing I suppose the best option would be to just wait till June where I’ll have abundantly more preparation and studying available?
@emmettfunston7 ай бұрын
I would wait until June. Just make sure to start studying now as if you were taking the one in two weeks. Do not give yourself time to slack off because it is farther away. You got this. Time management can be fixed by taking more practice tests. I am a pretty slow reader and had to train myself to read faster for the SAT. This meant I was reading faster in general (street signs, books, assignment directions, lecture notes). For math and grammar, there are a lot of tricks to gain speed. The books I used in the description really helped me with those sections. Missing out on easy questions sucks, but that means you have a lot of room to improve your score for the next test. You got this!

Is no prep 1180 good? I just gave one practice test before giving the actual one
@emmettfunston2 ай бұрын
@@aryajibi7408 It depends on what your goal is. If you are aiming for a solid score for a solid school, 1180 is pretty far even with no prep. With no prep there are people who can score 1500’s (rare), 1400’s (kind of common), 1300’s (common). Even starting out in the 1300’s is pretty low. If you have high goals I suggest preparing a lot as nobody really cares how much you prepared, only your best score. Good luck!

I have a question about my situation man, is it possible to take a 1070 to a 1500 in 5 months? Im going to become a senior and I feel like Im cooked
@emmettfunston3 ай бұрын
If you grind every single day for the next 5 months, I do think you can reach a 1500. I would highly recommend the books linked in my description. With the DSAT, you might want to look on Amazon for more updated workbooks (especially for books with practice exams in them... section specific books will still apply for the most part). Definitely purchase a workbook dedicated to each section (Reading, Grammar, Math) and complete each one cover to cover. The standard for a high score is receiving a perfect score on grammar and math. Begin taking practice SAT's every weekend (once a week). Once it gets closer to the test date, you'll want to take practice tests more than once per week. I would also suggest taking as many real SAT's as possible within the next 5 months because you do get more comfortable dealing with the pressure of a real exam after a couple of times. You should be able to get through section specific books cover-to-cover for reading, grammar, and math. You should be able to get these done way before 5 months if you are really serious about studying. If you finish a workbook, I would purchase another one purely due to the amount of practice problems you'll go through. If budget is a serious problem for you, Khan Academy is always an option. I started with Khan Academy and bought the workbooks as a last resort. I personally thought the workbooks were a lot more helpful. Good luck!

I did not study vocab directly. I would take many practice exams and if I did not know what a word meant, I would make sure to note it and search it up after. During the practice exam itself, you want to replicate the real exam and use context clues to attempt to determine the definition.

Nah your good, from what i’ve heard (at least for math) if you’re below 600 there’s likely some fundamental concepts you don’t know, and then from 600-750ish you just have to work on fully understanding the concepts (like being able to solve the concepts when info is missing, rather than solving them in a straightforward way like school presents them), and then from 750-800 it’s mostly avoiding silly mistakes and just locking all the way in
