Finally, someone does a story about Sawney Bean! I read that one time, a 5 year old child of the Bean clan bit Sawney (who was his grandfather and who knows what else) when Sawney stepped on the child. This enraged Sawney so much that he picked up the child and bashed his head against some rocks and killed him. When the Bean clan was captured, the youngest child who was around 4 or so was spared...for a bit. She was raised among the villagers until her 16 birthday whereupon she was put to death so she wouldn't be a threat to towns people.

Have been down the cave many times now, if it doe go back miles like the myths portrays, it’s inaccessible now because of sediment build up. What’s interesting though is we took a metal detector to it and found a coin from the 1500’s with King James on it - the king who supposedly ordered the hunt for the Sawney clan - so it’s some personal proof that the legend could be true!

Although the story of the Bean clan isn't likely to be true they wouldn't have hunted in the Scottish Highlands, which are a fair distance away (Ballantrae to Fort William is approximately 170 miles) and would likely have operated in Ayrshire, Dumfriesshire, Inverclyde and the Borders. Also, the image of William Wallace in blue face paint was dreamt up by Mel Gibson. The blue face paint, Woad or Isatis tinctoria, was worn by the Picts, (as well as many Celtic tribes) who died out in the 5th century, while William Wallace lived in the 13th and very early 14th century.
