Mind-Blowing Monday #3: Insane Victorian Railway Myths
In 1830 Britain began to build railways following pioneering steam locomotive inventions such as Robert Stephenson's Rocket.
However as opposed to being greeted with joy and wonder, there was a lot of fear and panic about this revolutionary new technology!

Shortly before his death Walter Disney wrote a note, mysteriously only reading: "Kurt Russell". The actor Kurt Russel was only six years old at the time. He did appear in a Disney movie called "Follow Me, Boys!" in that year but he has never met Walt himself. Nobody is really sure why Walt felt the need to write this note.

The term "electrocution" was coined by Thomas Edison himself but he originally proposed the term "To Westinghouse" to describe dying by an electric chair. George Westinghouse was one of his rivals.

Mind blowing fact about Romans! A group of defeated Roman soldiers stumbled to China (during the Han dynasty) while escaping! They were soon captured and put in a little village. It still exists today in the province of GanSu and the people living there looks way more like European than Chinese

Niagara Falls was dewatered in 1969 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to attempt to repair earthquake damage. The amount of water going over the Falls can be controlled, with up to 75% of water being diverted away from the waterfalls during the night.

Mind-blowing Fun Fact: In 1990 Vice Amiral Joseph S. Donnel issued a memo urging his subordinates to root out lesbians in the navy. When they needed to identify potential lesbians he wrote: Experience has shown that the stereotypical female homosexual in the Navy is hard-working, career-oriented, willing to put in long hours on the job and among the command's top professionals..."

When Europeans first traveled over to the new world and found the Yucatán Peninsula (now Central America), they called that because that is what the natives said to them when they got there. It was later discovered that yucatán in that native language meant "leave" or "go away"!

During world war 1 the Germans were attacking the Russians at the osoweic fortress and after the Germans used deadly gas against the Russians, who they knew had no gas masks, soldiers ran out of the fortress with just rags covering their mouth and charged toward the Germans who were advancing toward them. The Germans, surprised that the Russians were charging towards them, retreated and several fell on the barbed wire and died

It is illegal for a Womwne to eat choclate on a London Bus. It is considered to be provacative behaviour. Also, to protec the security of the first US jet, the P59 Airacomet, the chief test pilot Jack Woolams used to fly the aircraft in a Gorrilla suit, wearinng a bowler hat and smoking a cigar. The idea being if another pilot saw the aircraft and spoke about it, no one would belive him.

Pretty innacurate pictures. For Liverpool and Manchester, you showed the Stockton and Darlington, the thumbnail is a Victorian Railways (of Australia) D92 class, mostly used after the Victorian age.
@johnd8892
@johnd8892 3 жыл бұрын
The locomotives in the thumbnail are the Victorian Railways new A class of 1889 and B class of 1862. These had much less use after the A2 class of 4-6-0s took over the top trains from 1907. Never had a D92 class in Victoria. Sounds like NSW. More detail in this vid, especially at 20:31 kzbin.info/www/bejne/i2Wcf3efZ52CjZI Glad to see searching for Victorian Railways often turns up photos of our local trains, often in the Victorian era too like the photogenic double header.

Germany is widely known for its flourishing economy - which is especially remarkable considering that it lost two world wars. In Germany it's a widely accepted fact that this economic phenomena started with a game of soccer. The so called "Miracle Of Berne" was the finale of the Soccer World Championship 1954 in Berne, Switzerland. It was an incredible nailbiter but was eventually won by the team of West Germany despite all odds. Keep in mind that this was less than a decade after Germany lost WW2. The Nazis were gone but the country was in ruins, divided, demoralized and hated throughout the world. But historians are certain that this victory lead to a chain reaction that helped the nation back on its feet. The people felt moralized again, have been respected again, other nations and companies were interested to invest in Germany again, creating jobs and this lead to an economic miracle that is still holding on to this day - and it all started with a game of soccer.

Did you know that in Hawaii it was illegal to dance the Hula? It was banned when Queen Ka'ahumana converted to Catholicism, she found hula to be an indecent dance that worshiped false gods and goddesses. People who broke this new law where fined around $400.00 and could face arrest. However after her death, king David Kalakaua made it once agin legal and is celebrated as the Merry Monarch.
