my 9inch trowel is probably 8inch now after using it for 3 years and the shape changing but i find it's best for me. can still get as much mud on possible for laying beds above my head and if i keep it clean it's light as a feather

I use 11 1/2in trowel to lay block but there's a video on KZbin of an older guy laying 8in block with a 13in trowel and he uses it perfectly he doesn't over load it just enough to get a nice long spread when he's spreading the front and back of the bed and just enough to get a full perp joint on the both sides of the block with one trowel full he doesn't use it like a shovel

13 inch trowels only have any use in Australia where the muck is like piss, no point otherwise. Philadelphia pattern is for shell facing hollow blocks not for Bwk but if it works it works, London pattern for bricks. I had a 13 inch London pattern Rose years ago and could spread a bed for 4.5 bricks with it but no quicker really.

From watching the Aussie videos 12 inch trowels seems to be the standard size trowel over there . 13 inch trowels are ok for laying cavity blocks but your not fully loading the trowel when laying them.
