They are supposed to reinvest at least 20 -25% of their profits into research and development. But what they usually invest is closer to 8-13%. So that extra money goes right into stock buy backs and bonuses or buying another cheap drug on the market . One they feel they can do a better a job selling through their "networks" and advertising.

Oh PLEASE - most of the heavy lifting in medical research takes place on the public dime. I worked in medical research for 16 years and have a doctorate in the field - so I'm in a position to know. When I first started in the 90s I was being paid on an NIH grant in an academia. You know those commercials for psoriatic arthritis and Tyk2 inhibitors and Jak inhibitors for HIV? Well, I was in a lab that was working on that pathway and was making constructs to introduce variants of these into mice. This was almost 30 years ago - well before pharma was even interested. Now they are charging roughly $30-65k a year for these prescriptions. The "innovation" they are harping about happens mostly in the public sector on NIH grants (mostly RO1 grants) on the public dime.

Here there is a social contract, meaning most of the society agrees, that it is a GOOD THING to keep healthcare and education accessible to EVERYONE. I’m sorry to see that this particular video does not have as many views as other more sensational topics, but this bit of progress achieved through the IRA could have a profound impact on American life. Kyle points out correctly that the pharmaceutical companies benefit from taxpayer funded research, then charge enormous prices for the resulting commercial products. They benefit again when the taxpayer must cover use of the drugs through Medicare and Medicaid. High drug prices are a significant factor in the enormous budgets for these programs. Huge bureaucracies, also expensive themselves, are set up in part to control costs, but with the rules prior to the IRA, there was almost nothing that could be done except deny authorization to doctors, an extremely sketchy practice that leaves patients vulnerable.
