I wish it was a hamster in my case. Not a horror story and no one was at fault, but our GM who had it tough IRL once set up this cool caster miniboss who had it after a party member. My PC Counterspell ed them thrice and the GM called a break cause they were mad. They later said they were sorry and that they understood that things didn't always go as planned. I felt a bit bad cause I was only doing my character's job, but I couldn't have predicted I'd accidentally set my GM off. They're a great GM and the party was great too, we're still in contact. GM is doing better btw.

Bob the wizard reminds me of an deity I created a long time ago that was specifically designed to punish metagamers while still being within the confines of the game universe. Simply known as Lore, this deity is the god of greater knowledge and understanding. He worked tirelessly collecting records and every scrap of information he could from across the multiverse (Imagine that owl spirit with the library from ATLA). In my games lore, Lore the god had long ago realized that for some reason the universe didn't quite work on logic and reason and sound science and instead seemed almost like it was a story, as if it was at the whims of some being even greater than gods themselves. Lore did not break but partially glimpse to the fourth wall and realized that he may in fact be a character in one of my ( the DMs) games. This Revelation didn't quite drive him mad, but it did set him on edge and now he scans the multiverse for beings of unusual power and skill and watches them closely to see if they act in a way that proves that they have knowledge that they shouldn't. He hunts them mercilessly so that he may one day figure that out the truth and meet his creator. I never explained this to my players outright, but on the few occasions the players would invoke him to ask questions and seek advice, the only payment he would ask in return would be for information on powerful individuals who seem to "have an unexpected and unequal amount of control over THE NARRATIVE" Only ever had to use him this way twice in my many years of being a foreverDM, and both times the players passed the initial checks to dissuade him, but they did in fact get the message that there was a literal class level 100, greater deity rank 18 hunting for metagamers so that he may learn the truth of his own existence. In essence, the ultimate challenge for the ultimate assholes at my table...

That is... ... ...so cool. Very awesome idea to weave into your stories, and with practical uses to limit metagaming should it ever happen, just... ...nice. Good to know Lore doesn't have to show up too often in your games.

that first story was a trip. Though i'd say if that samurai was entitled, it was because OP enabled him by not being more strict. that guy clearly has experience with people who gives him an inch and has no qualms with taking miles. it behooves you to recognize when you're being shown no respect and give players like that the boot. he was practically daring OP to kick him. KNOWING he was doing things worthy of getting kicked. He was a mutliple time offender and those temporary bans only gave him a reason to act out.

In the second one, the guy basically said "Bring it!" Well, the players - who knew a thing or three about min-maxing as well as some basic, yet practical builds - brought it. I remember telling a friend of mine, who did 3.5, about Tasha's optional rule that allows characters to move stats around. He was like "Sounds like it increases the chances to do Min-Maxing." I'm like, "Well, if you're going to make something like a half-orc barbarian, and start with a 16 in both Strength and Constitution, while using Standard Array, aren't you already doing that?" Then he was like, "Well, making a Wood Elf Barbarian would be going against the lore." My response was like, "Look at it as a new subrace or individual preference." He was like, "Good point." Then I told him how, rules as written, Custom Lineage could start with a +3 in a given stat. About made his head spin. Then again, I guess anyone set in their ways would find change tricky.

I’m honestly a bit weirded out on this story; there seems to be no perceived triggers or motivations for why Samurai is acting like this (as in a general trend of bad behaviour prior to the big incident) , so either something was left out by op or samurai was this much of an entitled manchild or had something else going on with him. The DM certainly made an error in giving him more than one chance after the degree of poor behaviour Samurai had but it’s understandable in those circumstances and eventually samurai was removed.

About the second story. It's painful to see it... i GM GURPS with a philosophy "mate, make whatever you want, it just need to make sense" and let players do what they want as much as it fit their character, it's, in my opinion, a wonderful way to make stories from their actions and consequences hit them harder, how they bend the rules of the game and world to their objectiver to the point they can either have character moments through their flaws or beat the strongest and highest beings of that world. What bothers me the most about this GM is that the guy can't even accept that his players destroyed his railroad and created a goddamn incredible story, where they don't think like their patron who stuck them in a unwilling deal, and even a such powerful being wasn't able to stop the coordinated and prepared players
@ryanhowse9266

I ran a campaign for some people on R20 that I pitched as "D&D Roguelike". Basically it was pure combat (RP welcome and we did quite a bit of flavor stuff but everyone knew this was just min-max dice rolling fun) with the intent that the players had basically no supplies and they would go in a dungeon until they died and then they would get permanent, stacking buffs for the next run, with the goal of taking down the last room. I explicitly told people that if they could justify it, they could do it, and to bring the craziest builds they could dream up. I wanted to have a breezy campaign for people who just wanted to see big numbers and do cool shit, and everybody was on board. They leveled after every room, and the campaign ended at level 20 when Tim the Lizard Fighter practically one-shot the ancient white dragon waiting on the final floor with his comically broken melee build, it was wonderful.

Just gonna say it: while I appreciate the DM's continuous attempts to work through the issues with Samurai, that horror story was half one of the DM's own making, by not cracking down earlier & harder. Giving people a 2nd chance is a virtue. Giving people with no intention of improving or correcting, 2nd, 2nd chances & 3rd's is Tina Turner trying to convince herself how good Ike treats her. Stop giving multiple do-overs to people who prove over & over they didn't deserve the first one.
@Ailieorz

I feel like most of these horror stories are just people encountering narcissists, presumably for the first time. Just kick em, the earlier the better. They never change and will just keep bringing their toxicity to every session until they're gone. The second story though, pure genius

My thoughts 1st story: hearing about entitled players isn’t surprising considering how terrible said players are. But when it comes to bad players (or DMs) actively doing shit that ruins a campaign or is done out of spite. It really pisses me off, cause nobody deserves to go through this kinda crap. Nor does anyone have to take it, and it was clear that the Samurai wasn’t invested in the game. 2nd Story: I was laughing my ass off. This was just so damn funny that it shows how pointless it is to try and one up a group of players/on-off DMs. Especially if their your friends. Being a DM comes with a lot expectations. I know, I’m not that good of a DM, but I’m eager to practice and try to get somewhere. Bob on the other hand clearly didn’t get the memo, tossing a wave after wave of bad guys doesn’t make the adventure good or better. And power gaming didn’t get him anywhere, it just shows, that trying to play god was a Really Bad decision. :D

Giant Hamster. Seriously though, seems like Bob had a bad case of Dunning-Kruger Effect (i.e. the less you know about something, the more confident you are about your abilities in it) and was tired of the more experienced players shooting him down repeatedly, so attempted to turn it on them. Needless to say, they shot him down spectacularly. As for the samurai of the first story, he clearly had no respect for the game or the other players. I'm just glad he made an ass of himself before the GM tried to give him one last chance.

Hello. OP here. One of the books gives you rules to create monstrous creatures and characters. Being an advanced race would cost you levels😮. (Level adjustments) so for example a drow or similar race has strong magical and racial buffs, but will have you start at a lower level. On the other hand, races like kobolds and goblin basically give you a free level to compensate for how shitty the stats are. Hamsters are... not a powerful race. In fact they are barely playable. But should you decide to play one, AND be told that you are to be level 11... then you have akin to 14 levels to invest. As a hamster you cannot gain levels, because you are a semi- sentient pet withnonly basic understanding of the world around you, which disw7alifies you from say, studying magic at a college, or mastering weapons. There is... however... a table of templates. You can take level adjustments to aquire certain templates. For example in exchange for about 10 levels you would aquire the collossal template, meaning you are now Godzilla sized. This gives you no special abilities or feats, but it comes with somewhat massively increased stat bonuses. Virgil was also a collossal gerbil "of doom" which i dont remember what it did but sounded cool. (I think it gave me firebreath? And some stats ) Theres only a few feats you can learn as a hamster so i got improved grapple, better bite weapon, and improved stomach acid. As for what made Virgil good at grappling? Its based on base attack bonus, size and strenght. The empire state building lacks martial prowess, but if it falls on you it'll probably win the grapple check and pin you through intrinsic merit.

That story remind me of these battle royale type things we did in the early/mid 2000s, 20 level 20 characters go into an arena, one comes out. I only participated in one (and did not do very well), but the winner of that one had kind of an ingenious idea. Relying on everyone having access to tons of magic items and spells, he made a lowly sorcerer/dragon disciple/monk, with juuuuuuuuuuts enough levels of sorcerer to have the UMD to cast 'Anti Magic Shell' via scroll on himself at the start. He then went around with his scythe (technically vorpal - it was non-magical in the shell, but enchanted in case the shell wore off or he wasnt able to UMD it) and between the scythe and grappling, basically killed everyone, thanks to the anti magic shell basically neutering everyone else in the event

Virgil the giant Hamster was made when i simply stumbled upon a table in... monstruous races, i think? It detailed modifiers and enhancements a creature could purchase through level adjustments. Some races are more costly to compensate for their powerful abilities. Hamsters are the opposite and give you free levels, which sadly you cant use to take class level. Because hamsters have an inteligence score of 1. You can, however, spend 10 levels to become very, very large. A few more points will allow you to be ''Of Doom'', which i cant even remember the meaning of, but it did sound cool.

On the same note, if you have everyone ignore a parallel plot hook except the rogue that could totally handle himself alone as he's proven, and you then force the party to go that way anyway and deny the rogue from using those social skills that would have avoided mass deaths and a fire....maybe just let them split the party. DM learned from that to let my boy do his solo work and has earned the title of Pretty Gandalf, always showing up to save the day with what side event he handled, but damn, I'm still hurt over having them all rush past my rogue to cause everything to fall apart.

Thoughts on prologue story: Just because the quest giver is evil does not mean the party is evil for taking their quest. Now you could make a story hook, where the quest giver plans to frame the party for their own evil deeds. And then it will be up to the party to stop the villain, and maybe clear their name. But that does not in turn make them evil too. Thoughts on story 1 I do feel like there is something missing here. Because that last part of him doodling on the map and then writing ‘lies’ as well as trying to shift the blame on the other players and DM stating they’ve been looking for a reason to kick him. It feels like either there are some missing pieces or the guy has some legitimate mental health problems. Thoughts on story 2 As for the DM throwing a hissy fit. Dude, if you want to show D&D As super hard mode to everybody it’s really simple. You don’t need to home brew your own subpar campaign just Play “Tomb of horrors” it literally has straps that will disintegrate a player, or even strip them of all of their clothes and magic items and dumps you back at the entrance of the tomb. (I honestly can’t decide which is the worst punishment) it even has a false ending trap written into it that is designed to make the players think they’ve won when they haven’t even found the real treasure room.

With regards to the prologue, I personally would have looked more at how the players handled the quest, rather than who they took it from. Any good guy can be duped by an evil character. I’m currently doing this in my own game. But my players are doing good while doing the villain’s quests. Thus them retaining their alignments.

Prologue story- Yeah, that's what I was thinking. From the sound of it, they didn't even know he was evil, so you really couldn't claim they were all evil now, their characters were just likely deceived. Could be very interesting to actually have the quest giver be the/be in cahoots with the antagonist.

@@izzisart in my game there’s two villains. Villain 1 had done a wrong to Villain 2 when he was younger. And the campaign is basically Villain 2 using the heroes to get revenge on Villain 1.

@@izzisart Feel free! Basically it's my first campaign so all of this is over the backdrop of Lost Mines of Phandelver. I replaced the Townmaster with Villain 2 and Villain 1 is taking the role of the Black Spider. One of my players had a backstory of young noblewoman fleeing an arranged marriage she doesn't want. So I made Villain 1 her fiance and he wants her back. So instant reason for the party to work with Villain 2 without looking too deep at him.

The samirai story seems faked. Because there is no such thing as "closing the roll20" everything else seems fake too. When gm leaves the virtual table players are always free to join in and check the character sheets/map/handouts at any time. The only way to kick player is either deleting the whole game, or kick that one specific player.

You hear a lot about how GM/DM's should be allowed and encouraged to say no. After watching hundreds of D&D horror story vids, I've learned one simple lesson. Players also need to learn to tell their GM 'no'.
