The easiest way is probably to use a PivotTable. Group the dates by month, and put something like the persons name into the Values area to generate a count.

Because they are dates it can be a little more awkward to count the occurrances of months. You could use a SUMPRODUCT such as this one which counts the occurrances of September (9) - =SUMPRODUCT((MONTH(A1:A6)=9)*1)
