I was 11 when I played the floppy version, and the line about the catacombs got me, because, initially, I thought it could be a connection with Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, that I had played right before Monkey Island (Indy had a catacombs section, like the film). That went on for a few days because I was playing a pirated version, and thinking that it could be someting with my copy.... Only after fnding a friend with an original version, going to his home and finding out that his copy was asking the same thing, I convinced myself that it was a joke. Ah, the good old monkeyu island days....

I just introduced Monkey Island to one of my friends two days ago and he finished it yesterday. It's always fun to see new people playing the game for the first time and trying to figure out how to solve those puzzles, laughing at all the jokes and falling in love with the characters. It is an old game, but a game that still stand out today as a masterpiece for the ages, never getting old as it utalize all of its verbs, includes creative solutions that aren't based only on using items on hotspots and always drive the story instead of just being an obstacle that drag the story.

Yes, timelessly good design.

It was one of my favorite jokes in the game, and I was probably 8 or 9 when I first played through it (with a friend). We had a lot of laughs. I was instantly hooked on the Lucasfilm games \ LucasArts point and clicks and they topped my 'favorite games' list throughout the `90s. The stump joke was a classic example of the occasionally fourth-wall breaking and somewhat pythonesque humor in the game (though I wouldn't learn about Monty Python until some years later). Now turn off your computer and go to sleep!

I remember discovering the stump joke when I was a kid. I remember being confused by it at first, but I figured it out fairly quickly when I realized the game wasn’t actually checking for the presence of these disks. I remember being mad at the game for making it sound like there was something cool below the stump. It was a similar feeling to looking at Cheerios boxes with the delicious looking strawberries on the cover but not actually having any strawberries inside. It felt like false advertisement. I always felt cheated by the false promise of strawberries.

When companies started to replace their first wave of PC's a lot of the old systems ended up in the homes of employees. The more enthusiastic had already done a little gaming but quite a few people were still new to it and this joke probably had them a bit confused especially as they may not have been running an official copy.

I’m 50 and still remember that joke. Another Lucas Arts thing that has stuck with me to this day was the Indiana Jones Atlantis game. To get out of the basement of the college, I had to use a jar of mayonnaise from the pantry refrigerator to grease the base of a statue to move it towards a window to climb out. Only time I had to use the hint line. What kind of drugs were those writers on?

Anyone tried to pick up the voodoo love beads? Those are the bead curtains at the Voodoo Lady's shop, after speaking with the Vodoo Lady while the screen scrolls left you can try to get them, if you're fast enough you can do it, I mean you can select "Pick up" and click on the beads and it seems that you have achieved it but in reality nothing will be added to your inventory 🤷♂ I was hoping that after I managed to "get them" (even if them didn't show up in inventory) it would still enable an alternate ending or some extra scene after the credits, but as far as I know it doesn't change anything 😢 Maybe it was a puzzle they couldn't finish due to lack of time... or that they had to remove because it would require a fifth floppy disk 😁 It's still present in the special edition.

I think the catacomb reference might have been a hint to the underground walkway you were originally supposed to access through the door behind the alleyway in Melee High Street. It would have spanned the entire Monkey Island universe as an indication it was really a theme park (later used in MI2 but you can't go back out into Melee). It would also explain why there are some doors in Melee you can enter and reappear at the other side of the screen without an indication you're going through a building...makes more sense if it's underground.

I think had I had the floppy version of the game, I would have went "ha, of course". But you also have to remember that hard drives were a thing, and if the game was installed to the hard drive, seeing the prompt may confuse people since they're not using the physical disks. There is a similar joke to this in SpaceQuest 4 (which came on floppies and CDROM,) where there are two references to a "Kings Quest" game that comes on a billion floppy disks, The first being in the discount bin "KQ XXXXVIII: The Quest for Disk space" in which the second reference, KQ XLIII taking up 841PB.

Yeah, a lot of countries call it different things - Swedish Key, English Key, etc. In the UK we don't call it a monkey wrench; not even sure we have a name for it, it's just an adjustable wrench I think. So, the joke only really works in North America.
