I produce Dance and House music and in these genres the rules are often broken. But mostly as a creative method. Building up reverbs for example needs the reverb plugin to be inserted. But I use parallel processing often too, especially with my beats. I use New York City Compression often with a API 2500 compressor and a EQ after that. That works amazing. Thanks again for this video Chris, great video!

Here's a simple principle to follow. To change/alter the sound, insert. To add to/blend with the sound, send.

So, these effects are all about affecting audio signals with different effects that affect the outcomes of the signals. That is what music is supposed to be about, lots of affections, that has emotional effects on us.

Thanks Chris, I was going over the FX Channel in your course earlier, trying to figure out when to use it, this has helped me understand it a lot better. Looking forward to checking out the Mixing course, although I'll need to crack on with the Ultimate guide one first lol. I've got to go over things a few times, practicing them for it all to sink in, I'm getting there and I've managed to get my first template organised with the new colours, tempo and signature track as well..awesome..thanks so much!

Great vid and as usual it's good to get your clarity and insight - always learn something! For myself, I use a variety of methods, but what works for me most of the time is this: On a lead vocal I tend to use insert effects for almost everything, including delays and chorus effects. Then for backing vocals, I usually send them all to a group where I have all my compressors etc, but will use effects channels for reverbs and delays, but I'll throw a chorus on the group insert. (If the backing vocals are layered in different sections, I use different groups as the compressors usually mess with layered vocals that come in and out over other backing vocals). I will then also send snare and toms and kick drums and guitars etc. to that same reverb effects channel, so that everything sounds like it's in the same place... like it was all in the same room when performed. I also use that same reverb effects channel for the lead vocal mentioned earlier some of the time, or I copy the reverb settings and use them in the insert, mainly because I like to automate the reverb on a lead vocal to emphasize certain sections. I find that this helps the lead vocal sit in the mix really well. I use delays on most lead guitar solos too and will usually either use the delay as an insert on the channel itself or on a group channel if it's recorded in sections. (I should add that if I'm using stereo effects as inserts on a channel, I set that channel up in stereo to begin with.) I find this method saves me from jumping around the mixing window too much looking for the effects channels... because I fiddle with stuff a lot! Luckily, I have a PC that can handle all of this without any hiccups!

Many noobs start out mixing with inserts. Not to say that it’s not effective but I’ll add that using sends and fx tracks improve CPU usage and enhance workflow.

When you say ´original signal´ you mean ´ Dry´ signal that we could fix by adding Insert effects like EQ / Comp / Saturation / before we add ´send effects´ then after we are happy with result we can add send effects like reverb delay ect.?

Is there a reason you automate your FX channel (eg the delay and verb) rather than automate the send? I tend to leave the FX channel static and add emove level on the vocal send but I'm interested in your rationale. Am I getting something wrong? :)
@mixdownonline
@mixdownonline 3 жыл бұрын
Good question... The way you do it is perfect. I did it this way since I don't have any other channels feeding this FX Channel, only the lead vocal does in this mix. At this point, it's a personal preference, nothing more :-)

[OFFTOPIC] Chris, I was wondering if you know how to enable the Steinberg AXR4 hardware processing plugins inside of Cubase when using the Control Room. I can't seem to figure out why they are not available in the Hardware tab in the inspector... Any idea's?
@mixdownonline
@mixdownonline 3 жыл бұрын
Yes I do, you need to setup an stereo output (F4) that you're not using. Mine is setup to ADAT Outputs 1-2. It's like if the AXR4 doesn't detect the Control Room. That's the fix for now!

Hello Chris, I don’t use cubase but I have a question. Do send effects in the same channel work in chain? Or every send fx input is the original signal every time? If i put reverb send after delay send in the same channel , will the delay send also be reverbed?
@mixdownonline
@mixdownonline 3 жыл бұрын
No, they work in parallel...you're sending the same signal to all available Sends :-)

Here´s question regarding Control Room/cue settings in CB 10.5: I use Steinbergs MR816csx with 8 ins and 8 outs. Is it possible to connect i.g. out 1+2 to the cue and i.g. 3+4 for anoither monitor source? If not I´m forced to always open the Audio connections (F4) to re-route on Monitor with output 1+2
@mixdownonline
@mixdownonline 3 жыл бұрын
You can create up to4 Monitor Stereo Outputs in F4. So use out 1+2 and out 3+4 for your 2 pair of monitors (you can switch between the 2 through the Control Romm) and use the out 5+6 and 7+8 for Cues Mixes :-)

Hey Chris, I´m wondering if I could reduce CPU workload with FX channels? I have heavy problems with the work flow on my laptop because of plugins I´m using, it stucks the whole time and it is incredible to mix accurate like this. How could I fix this problem in terms of plug-ins usage? Best regards

I break the rules all the time because there are no rules, experiment with this or that, if it achieves the sound you are looking for and it fits in the mix , then you didn't break any rules, just remember, it takes time to experiment. So if you have the time, try anything, you will be surprised what happens.
