Cathy T While I agree and it is heartbreaking for the family, I do think that a lot of trans people who are of a similar age to Lauren could not have possibly come out when they were teenagers or in their 20’s. It was unheard of to try to explain something like that at that time. So they went on and attempted to live a normal life and have children because simply put, they were afraid of the family or societal reaction. Now that it is recognized and people feel safe to have the discussion, they are coming out.

I used to know this couple... our daughters danced ballet together about 10 years ago. I always saw the dad with the daughter, dropping her off at class, picking her up, putting her coat or ballet slippers on... he seemed to take more of the role as "mom". I figured he was just a very involved dad. Now I'm watching this and I'm blown away. I wish the wife the best of luck in her relationship and raising their children together. I personally wouldn't be able to handle that. I give her credit.

You also have to take in consideration that people who are transgender they deny it to to themselves because they don't want it to be true they are scared of it being true. So they try to ignore it and continue to try and live life. They don't purpose purposely lead someone on or lie to anyone. It's a battle inside their mind. They try to ignore it and they are in denial. That's where the depression comes in. My best friend is transgender. Before he transitioned to male. She was suicidal, self harming, just in a very very dark place. She went inpatient for mental health issues for 4 months and they worked through it. They came home and that's when they transitioned because they knew they were transgender deep down since he was little. But he tried to push those thoughts away because they are terrifying thoughts. Nobody wants to be transgender. That's why people like Lucy keep it a secret for so long. They aren't even knowingly keeping a secret for very long. And they usually don't connect the dots until the depression and anxiety was so bad they can't take it anymore. Than they admit it to themselves.

Gender identity and sexuality are two different things. The simplest way to explain it is that sexuality is who you go to bed with and gender identity is who you go to bed as. I watch this show and actually really like this couple, but hearing Jennifer say that they are the family that everyone wants to be is disappointing, it really seems about appearance to her. I have been married for 22 yrs and there is no way my husband could keep this big of a secret/lie from me and I am positive other long term relationships could say the same. We are together because we love and care for each other and we are friends not because we want to be the envy of the hood.
