I am from Naples and grown up near scampia area, I can give you some more info about that area. These Scampia buildings are called "le Vele" (the sails), they were built in the eighties to support all the people who had lost their homes after a strong earthquake destroyed half the city. Sadly a lot of these criminals forced the good people out of it to get the free given flats so it quickly turned into a densly populated criminal area (note that more than half of the families here are just normal people living their lifes, they are just poor and can't escape the zone). It's funny you say people here keep staring at me and they are suspicios, you look suspicious as fuck too XD. Scampia is far out from Naples city, the areas you are showing in the video are just the scum of Naples, the most part of the city is modern, cool and enjoyable. The videos taken in the first part of the video are in the city center area called Quartieri Spagnoli, that's the second worst part in Naples, where another Mafia family has control (different than scampia one). So basically all these neighborhoods you are showing are just the worst part of it, you would be suprised to see how amazing the normal areas are looking. The people in Naples is also the most friendly in Italy, as a tourist you can't really tell where the bad people is unless you get yourself in such zones with a 1000$ camera in the hand :) Some fun facts about your video: when entering the first vela you hear a kid screaming something, that's a typical signal to drug dealers that someone sketchy or police is entering. As for the truck selling fish, you have the same for any kind of food, fruits etc. even delivering fresh baked bread XD, of course all black market. Another fun fact, while walking in such areas you are the safest in Naples, because thiefs do not work near their homes, that attracts undesired police's attention, instead they go steal in the richer areas of the city. As for the people believeing it's all like in the Gomorrah movie, it's really not like that, there are such situations in those areas of course but as a tourist you wouldn't notice anything. In the past couple years it became much safer too since million of tourists are attracted from the city and sketchy people got a job, it's defintely worth a visit, check some other Naples video.

@@orchmuto5265 you can see kids at time mark 24:38 coming home from school, so we can assume it's 1:30pm, that's holy lunch time bro, Italians can't skip food :D. You should also have a look at this place from the map, these are just residential buildings with nothing around, you will only find junkies in the basements and some dealer at each corner, but no people. If you want to see people you should head towards streets, where shops are, here you will find your sketchy people sitting outside bars or riding on scooters around the city. Most of the people are roaming between Scampia and Secondigliano, which is the next and main village.

For the ones that want to know: Scampia is not anymore dangerous as it was 15 years ago. Before a big war between local caused many deaths and attracted the attention of the media and the police, it was the largest drug market in Europe. Then the traffic and criminal density moved to other neighborhoods of Naples due to the enormous amount of police that the war attracted. Now it is still a degraded neighborhood but nothing like what it was in its worst years.

I know this would be very difficult most of the time but having a local guide you at these locations and giving you the history on it would make this series 10x if not 100x better. You are doing a awesome job mate and I hope some fans out there can help you out with some of the episodes in the series. EDIT: Replies to this seem to be fairly divided on the topic. I understand that the people who disagree want to only see these places from Spanian's perspective and I also enjoy his take on these places but I also think that he can walk around by himself and then actually present all the questions he has to a local who can give Spanian context to what he is seeing. I think it would be great to hear Spanian's thoughts on a similar yet different lifestyle to the one he has led.

Construction of La Vele began in 1962, and dragged on until 1975. Not long after completion, they were overrun with squatters and people evacuated from elsewhere during the 1980's seismic crisis; the maintenance basically ceased, and the entire estate has been decaying ever since. Two blocks were demolished in 2003, and a further one in 2016. The remaining ones were also scheduled to be demolished, except for one, that would be refurbished, but this, like so many projects in the area was so far not yet realised. There are places around Napoli where partially completed buildings have stood abandoned for several decades.

I'm Italian Aussie with Dad's Napoli roots. I know Scampia is really rustic (read: rough), but it's still marginally better than the slums I grew up in in Adelaide. Yes, Adelaide, Australia! Maybe Spanian can dare himself to walk around Elizabeth/Davoren Park. Unempkoyment rate 35 pc...in OZ!
@conr16

@@jmartelli6874Bro no offence but I highly doubt anywhere in Australia is rougher or harder than Clichy Su Bois in Paris or Scamia in Naples? Maybe I'm wrong? Is where your from like the vid Spanian did in a suburb of Sydney with fellas flying about in cars doing burn outs and boys rallying scrambler bikes up n down roads with ice heads n spice heads scattered through out the area? That was mad to see because in Ireland and UK people think of "Neighbours" when they think Australia. But it's nothing compared to Naples Mafia clans controlling the areas ordinary people live in through fear and "helping" them (loaning money or getting there kids to do dirty work to pay off debts). I live in Northern Ireland we have Paramilitaries who rule entire housing estates with fear, intimidation and respect due to killing cops n British army during the conflict here. Peoples mum's bring there sons who are involved in drug dealing or joyriding to be shot in alleys here, shooting by appointment like the Dr or Dentist except its fellas in balaclavas with 22 calibre handgun to clip your thigh, ankle or calf for being a "bold boy" 😂! Entire areas with businesses pay protection money to paramilitaries they even control who lives in social housing by intimidating foreigners out of their homes so they can move in there own people or family. Bouncers are ex/current paramilitaries as are Taxi Drivers 😅😂 eyes n ears everywhere much like the Camorra in Naples! But if your area of Australia is mad like that and this place in documentary then sorry my bad bro! Be interesting if Spanian goes to where you are on about - is it the worst place in Australia?

@@conr16 Northern Ireland! That would have been something. I know that Scampia is quite rough, even if I saw some diamonds in the rough in "The Sails". Maybe, I didn't find it the worst because I'm part Napoletan at heart. But, you do admit that if Scampia still has functioning supermarkets whilst a video showing Airds and Claymore in Sydney showed barely stocked shops, then something must have been amiss somewhere. The area in Adelaide where I grew up, Rosewater, was just as rough as Scampia back in the 80's...one reason that contributed heavily to my clinical depression. Such was the doom and gloom...

@@DJ20131000It's a mad place in parts but beautiful in countryside n quiet parts of cities 😊. Recently paramilitaries walked right past the cops wearing hoodies and scarves to conceal there identity, took them down before entering court, put them back on again and sat in a court room to intimidate innocent victims /nice people's families and to listen to what a super grass (big informer) was saying.. In a first world country not Brazil, Albania or Somalia 😂! Fellas I would have bought grass off but who sold other drugs have been dragged out of a chippy took round an alleyway and shot in both legs people checked if he was OK rang an ambulance and kept ordering there takeaways.. Very eery place in certain estates.. In like 2002 or 2003 a young fella got literally crucified on a wooden fence for being caught trying to steal a top man in one of the paramilitaries BMWs.. People in that estate heard him screaming from being beaten with bat's n bars four literally an hour or two and no one did anything or went out to see what's going on.. Scary and Scummy at the same time.. The police cut him down with wood and nails still in his hands.. 😮 🙏

Wonderful inhabitants, best food, great nightlife and great weather. What else could you want? By the way: you really visited the most desolate areas of the city. The city is like a gift box: buildings and areas might seem run down on the first look, but when you enter the building/flat/appartement/courtyard it's gonna be gorgeous and the people you meet will be friendly, sympathetic and talkative. Never talked so much to strangers, even though my Italian is quite rusty. And the food, omg, the food... That alone is worth going there. Best Pizza in the world. Fogliattelle. @@luceinbattaglia9425 Australia doesn't have a lot of public housing in 50s, 60s or 70s Brutalist architecture that's really been let go. There's the Sirius building, but it's not really on the same level as "the sails of Scampia" in terms of being an oppressive environment. The association of the architectural style with Cold War totalitarianism doesn't really help the dystopian impression. The subdivided weatherboard public housing, rectangular steel Arc public contract fencing, "VIP" lounges full of pokies and Coles/Woolworths/Target shopping centres in the poorer outer suburbs are a different sort of sad.

Italy would have to be the prime example of communities who are over tourism due to over-tourism. Venice would have to be the epicentre banning large cruise ships with hordes of tourists descending on a piece of 'land' which is so limited in size. I believe that there is so many tourists there that the locals have left taking away what was beautiful in the first place. Love your vids mate. Lived in Naples for 9 years, but never made it to Scampia (except for getting a lift from Piscinola a couple of times). What I can tell you is that there are a lot of other places round the whole bay that look like Scampia. Even some of the places that are not as directly connected to the Camorra also have that dingy look. Take some of the area going towards Nola for example, or even Noceria, or out towards Cuma you can also find these run down places. But it's mainly due to the poverty and problems of corrupt politicians that's caused this mess. Although I never made it to Scampia, I'd say the area around Garibaldi Station is pretty grim. Walking home from there at night you could definitely see some freaky stuff. But what I will say is that for a city that has a reputation for crime, I never felt safer anywhere else, as safe as I did in Naples I mean. The people from Naples are the best in the world (I should know as I married one 😉). They are anobgst the most generous friendly warm people you'll ever meet. Thankyou spanian for shining a light on these forgotten places. My husband is Italian, he moved to Australia with me 15 years ago. And this is the south italy he talks about. The Mafia has has taken over the rubbish collection and most of the public housing and schools. You have to pay them "protection money" if you own a business. If you don't they'll burn your shop down. The further south you go the worse it gets. Catania is worse again, but amazingly there are families living there. And inside the apartments they keep them pretty neat. But there's no plumbers coming to fix leaks or electricians. People don't know how good our tenants have it in Australia.

Someone grinding the VIN off at minute 28.01.... I was born and grown up in Naples. Bloody hell i can't actually believe Spanian was on the Line 1 getting off at Scampia. Bro youll never have idea how lucky you ve been to make it out of there safe and sound with all those tattoos and a go pro. Also, they put the wheel lock even on shitty cars because they dont only steal them for parts or to resell it, but also to ask money to the owner in exchange to get the car back. The last sail you went in it's called " the red sail " and doesn't just look like its the worse, it actually is. fair play tho i love your videos and you are a really nice guy and you have balls. I love that you speak the same way of all my friends from Cambelfield, Fawkner, Craigieburn.

Can I make a comment, because I have been to Naples before, and feel like I get the vibe of that place. It is dilapidated, for sure, but, it is full of character, and history, on every single corner. You can't really judge it from the way it looks, as they say - don't judge a book by its cover. The people are gems, and society continues to function despite its outward appearance. The mafia are not there to shoot people walking on the street, they need to respect the families, the individuals, so even if they are operating in that area, you don't need to worry about it. You worry about places like Sweden.

No one should be living like that, this is making me tear up at points. Spanian must have felt like he was walking into some dystopian future, idk how he does is. But thanks for doing it, I hope it motivates people to make the areas we live in better and try to find ways to help everyone. And even when the people might be doing everything they can to make it a better area but if they are ignored by the government and when theres no community strength they cant fight the government to uphold their rights.

The thing about Italy is that it's quite safe compared to many cities in the US for example. Even on places like this you can see nobody ever bothered you and most people are just trying to get on with their life. People looking at you is normal because you stand out as a non local, however most of them would be very hospitable and welcoming should you talk to them. Even if you were to step into an organized crime area somehow, I'd be surprised if something ever happened to you other than people telling you to leave.

Actually Naples has a big aerospace industry. The popular ATR 42/72 turboprop airliner is manufactured in Naples. Plus the Boeing 787 tail plane was designed in Naples by engineers at Leonardo Aerospace, plus it is built there too. The Boeing 787 fuselage is manufactured in Apulia. Plus many more advanced industries are located in Naples.

Congratulations nice video, Scampia is now an iconic, almost cinematic place, very different from how it used to be. In the 2000s when Scampia had the highest level of drug dealing, there was the famous Scampia feud, where there were many deaths between different mafia families. In later years the remaining ones were arrested by the police. Reason why the area is very different from how it was 20 years ago, having left, however, a lot of degradation in the whole area.

From reading Roberto Saviabo book "Gomorrah" about this area Scampia n the Camorra. There is an underground economy. Some of the gates and areas into flats are welded shut paid for by local Camorra Mafia clans to stop the Cops n Drug Squad coming into the flats so easily. It must be very hard to *try* and stop your son getting involved in that way of life or your daughter from getting hitched up or having kids with someone from that life.. There's probably nothing you can do to stop them getting involved as what's the alternative in areas like that be a wage slave for €250 a week or work for the local Mafia for €100 a day starting out as a look out so you can't be put to prison for a long time... If you did that 7 days a week that's near €600 to €700 a week no minimum wage job pays that especially in those run down suburbs 😔 The cops n state have 0 respect in the suburbs like alot of places so it's an uphill battle. Why would you bother with education or a trade when people with a Rolex and an AMG Merc brainwash you from primary school age that they are the "cool" fellas in your flats...
