As a Barcelonian I would not say el Raval is the most dangerous hoods in the city. It just turns out it is located in the city center, close to the tourisc area and that why it has became more popular. But hoods like La Mina has always been far more dangerous

Spanian, I liked this episode - much like most people, I'm sure. I think you should get an interpreter and head to areas like this and try to talk to the locals in the hood. People watch you because you’ve lived this life, if you could connect with the hoods you’re going through it would be much deeper… also you might be able to get an invite into the locals houses and hear their stories. Keep up the good work man.

Completly agree beacause it’s not what you see in this video. In the good flats the rents are expensive, in the bad one cheap. In that hood cultures are very mixed. But Raval is not that dangerous if you are smart, but if you go here to visit, don’t enter to raval at night, and don’t go with all your jewlery. Barcelona is very besutifull, it has beach and mountain, and whatever you want. Be clean, don’t be loud, and try typical catalan food, as fricandó, escudella, caragols, and more, don’t pick the rambla’s restaurants, because it are expensive, and food it’s very bad.

I lived and worked in el Raval 1996 to 1998, the best time of my life. I am Catalan living in Oz now. Back then i was a Registed Nurse carrying A$10.000 worth of morphine and other meds for palliative care use around the neighborhood. Us nurses didn't wear uniforms, but when we walked those streets people would give us way. It was like the parting of the Red Sea: everyone knew who we were and no one was stupid enough to mug us, we helped the elderly, the sick and dying, the AIDS patients, the tuberculosis ones... there is honor amongst thieves, and one does not shit in one,s own nest. I got my 1st tattoo in Carrer Nou de la Rambla. I still visit my friends in several bars in there and I miss the piss smelling narrow streets with everything I,ve got. My 1st partner lived and died in el Raval from heroin overdose (suicide, intentional). A part of my heart is in el Raval forever.

As someone living in Barcelona, I believe this video would be even more valuable if it focused more on the common scams and tricks that people should be aware of. It was great that you included the part about the women in white at Plaza who offer selfies-that’s exactly the kind of information viewers need. Understanding these scams is crucial, as it’s not just about avoiding dangerous neighborhoods but also about being prepared for the subtle ways you can get caught off guard. Highlighting those aspects would really enhance the practical value of your content, not just for people visiting Barcelona, but for anyone traveling to other major European tourist cities as well. Thanks for the effort you put into making this video!

I lived in Spain for 6 years, 2 hours north of Madrid. Bought an old flat in a working class suburb, which reminds me a lot of where you were walking around. Back in Oz now, but man, you're giving me a walk down memory lane. You were wanting to get in to the hallway of those flats. Usually the doors are well secured because of squatters. Once they get access to your apartment it is very difficult to get rid of them. Really, nothing much to see. Mailboxes, stairs and an elevator .

@BrendanBFree not sure where you're from, but from my experience in Spain, squatters were very hard to get rid of. It could literally take years as there are certain aspects of the law on their side. I saw reports of people who had a mortgage on a flat with squatters, and they had to keep paying the mortgage or risk losing the flat. And if you tried to physically harm them, you ran the risk of ending up in jail yourself.

Very interesting video. I've lived in Raval for 5 years and sure it is rough, there are a lot of drugs and some shit happening, but the rough charm is something unique that attracts tourists and foreigners moving to Barcelona. It's pretty gentrified, used to be way worse from my understanding. Many of these streets that looks sketchy are housing tons of hipster kids, skaters and people with decent amount of money. It's grim, but personally I loved it and never felt unsafe, although you always have to keep your guard up still. They test you and if you act like a tourist, you are an easy target.

As a young woman who has lived in Barcelona for 8 years, Raval is not the most dangerous area of the city. Go to La Mina. I have friends who have lived in some of the areas you walked through. It's interesting to see your perception of what was going on around you and someone saying 'tito' - that means uncle.

I've lived next to La Mina for 20 years. My kids have friends there, they've played there. It's dirty, noisy and smelly, but as long as you stay away from the usual suspects (you know who), nothing is going to happen to you. Walk into Raval at night means trouble. Violent trouble.

Been Barcelona many times, El Raval is not dangerous, it's just a very unlucky place for tourists who aren't street smart. I've been in some weird stair ways in buildings to buy weed etc, never had a problem. I've had friends who have been pickpocketed/robbed, but they were either drunk or dumb enough to put their bags down and not keep an eye out. These petty theives cover most of the center, however there is more around El Raval with it covering one of the main streets etc. Best thing to do is - Don't look like a tourist (advice for any country), and don't talk to randomers that approach you.

El Raval is seedy and a bit rough in some parts with some crime, but nowhere near as bad as he makes it out to be. It's a really characterful "barrio" (not "hood") and mostly safe to walk around during the day. I lived there for 15 years and never had any problems, even walking home late at night as so many people were about. You have to keep your wits about you and take care of your belongings, the same as in many parts of Barcelona where tourists are a target for thieves. And there are drug dealers and prostitutes, but they leave you alone if you don't bother them. In this video it was clearly filmed when most shops were shut so there aren't so many people going about their daily business. Despite the outside appearance of buildings and narrow streets, many flats have been done up - you just have to look on a property website to see how nice some of them are. I lived in a flat on fourth floor with a narrow, shabby staircase and no lift, but once inside the flat it was lovely and light. I was less keen on being serenaded by Filipino neighbours on their karaoke every weekend though :) It's interesting to revisit the area in the video, despite the many adverts which interrupt it.

I just got back from Barcelona, go there often as my daughter lives there. That’s 50 minutes of my life I won’t get back watching that. I’ve walked through the Arab quarter often, never had a problem. It has more of a reputation as being dangerous at night. During the day just petty stuff which can happen in any European City. Few simple rules, don’t put your wallet in your back pocket, in fact I take out one credit card and a few Euro. Don’t put anything valuable in a back pack, in a crowded place they will slice it open. Don’t film walking down the street with a camera or phone, spot the tourist! If you are lost walk like you know where you are going. If you want to consult you phone for directions, find a seat, sit down and pretend you are playing on your phone. Don’t walk around with ya phone in your hand they will snatch it or leave it on a table at a cafe etc. They also love to get you when you are trying to buy a subway ticket at a machine. You can see the suss people usually when you come out of the subway, especially around Las Rambla and El Espana. I have been down that ally with the prostitutes, nobody hassles you. As for the graffiti , every shutter on every shop in Barcelona is the same. Every ally and every street in Barcelona has those narrow alleyways, not just the Arab quarter. The locals were warning you that you stick out like dogs balls the way you were walking around. Final rule don’t engage with anyone with paint faces, dressed as characters or offer you anything especially when it’s supposed to be free. Don’t trust anyone. I’m a 65 year old skinny white blonde guy and never have a problem, stick out like dogs balls down there. You blend in, you were never going to have much trouble, only the camera was drawing attention to yourself.

@Spanian It would be cool to have you use a gps tracking app during your walks so you could use cut footage and in the corner of the screen or occasionally reference the path you take through these neighborhoods. It would add another layer of understanding to where you walked about and what areas are the sketchiest. Also it would show how much ground you actually covered and so on. They are popular for runners I don't know if that is something you would find interesting to include but figured I'd mention it.

I think you get pickpocketed faster in main center of Barcelona, then at El Raval. I walked through El Raval never even thinking it was a 'dangerous' place

Barcelona just is one of the pickpocket Capitals of Europe (with Naples). And since it‘s so close to the center a lot of tourist especially the solo ones who mostly wander off they are easy to rob. It just seems like an poor area with a drug ploblem that just tryna make the easiest money available. Nothing too brutal
