I got the replacement and installed it. Just as you said it's a one piece unit now with rivets and no nuts and bolts. My old one could be completely disassembled, but the new one works without leaking, so I'll keep it for now. Thanks for the great video and info.

The Kohler shower valve in our bathroom is quite different and so far not covered here on youtube. It is a "shower only" type valve similar to Kohler part # K-8304-KS. There is no tub/bath faucet. It is only 5 years old and leaking through the shower head.

My shower faucet was leaking slowly. So, today I purchased Kohler kit GP76851 for $73 at a local plumbing supply house. I installed all the parts, including the regulator, mixer and two new O-Rings. While I had the pressure balancing part out, I noticed the hot water inlet port of the brass valve body had significant calcium buildup, blocking about 2/3 of the port. I removed most of the calcium with a toothpick and then turned the water back on briefly to blow the lines clear. I then noticed the shiny brass plating was missing from the area around the hot water inlet port, where the back side of the rear hot side O-Ring would seal against. The cold side had a smooth shiny brass surface. I tried cleaning the surface, and got some loose material off, but the remaining surface was not real smooth like it ought to be for a good O-Ring seal. I liberally coated the new O-rings with silicone lubricant like the instructions said, and reassembled the valve. Still drips slowly, and I strongly suspect problem is leakage past the rear hot-side O-Ring. The shower valve was installed new only 6 years ago, I'm now sorry I chose Kohler. I'll be contacting them next week to see about warranty replacement of the entire valve.

If your the original owner you can get the repair kit from Kohler GP76851 for free with free shipping. Otherwise they charge about $90 on their website for the kit. Mine wore out after about 8 years and the shower started dripping. Also, I must have an older model because it comes apart and the neoprene seats and springs pop right out. It's a real pain trying to install it because nothing holds those parts in place and they tend to get out of alignment or fall out completely during installation.

Kohler seems to find a way to jack up repair cost. I’ve learned that on my shower and my toilet. On the kohler toilet they even made a special designed seal between the tank and bowl that’s expensive for no reason.

So two different issues. My guess is when the mixing valve is going bad, then that's when you usually have the leak issue. When you have an issue with temp regulation (i.e. you can't change the temp despite the handle location) my guess its the pressure regulating value. Here's why...when the diaphragm fails (like it did with me), the water mixes in the pressure regulating valve and whatever pressure is highest at the time dominates. For us, it was hot, so I would only get one temp. There were a few times when we got cold, but that turned out to be when the washing machine was on and was using hot water. In any case, I had an older pressure regulating valve that had bolts vice rivets, and when I pulled it apart, I found the diaphragm to be completely disintegrated. When I replaced it with a new one, problem fixed!

Hi, thanks for this, 1. is there a way to increase shower water pressure with this valve set up? 2. Can I replace both the shower valves without having to change the ruff in set up?

I have a slow drip from the shower head. I replaced the Kohler mixing valve - drip is a bit slower, but still there. Should I also replace the pressure valve behind it ? Thanks

Yes, it may help because of the seals between the cartridges. But if you have any debris in your water, it could be that.
