Caste was never meant to be a part of Hinduism in the way it exists today. In Gita, caste is supposed to be by the nature of your thoughts (guna) and karma, not by birth. originally a skill based system of classification called varnas which is a socio-economic system (It wasn't a vertical system but a horizontal one)i.e Hindu Philosophy and spirituality doesn't require caste...at ancient time like how we have upper, middle, lower classes by capital they had the classification depended on skill and talent. Transmigration(possible because originally it was a horizontal system) between varnas was also possible as one can go from brahmin to shudra or viceversa. Look at all the hindu literary works major ones have been done by a fisherwoman's son (Ved vyasa) or Valmiki who used to be a thief and outcaste and many more. So its clear that "Hindu" Dharm doesn't require it but the earlier societies did but now we dont. The rigidity of Chatur Varna system was seen from Early AD only in certain few places as brahmins wanted to hold on to the power but still at most places it was all kind of ok, in gurukul shudras were also given education. But as time went along there was this islamic invasions, where the islamic community has the most rigid society or communtiy reffered as Ummah. To sustain and protect from outside influences our society too changed. Before the islamic invasions, there existed lot of clans, when the vedic society assimilated with these existing communities some people of higher authorities joined kshyatriya and brahmin class but to remain at power they too did some changes but they never discarded their respective clan community(i.e "jati") thats how this semi rigid varna and "jati" mixed together and almost became same. So it was all the political play, which inturn influenced psyche of the society and came to be reflected in certain shastras (ironically if one refers to vedas these texts are inauthentic since vedas dont imply any of this). Then Britishers came they too played their hand for instance they thmeselves created estimated 2000 more caste sub sects to create rift in hindu society therefore more easy to convert to christianity too which will make their plan of colonising easy, they mistranslated a lot of our texts to show that our culture is barbaric, they created the now debunked AIT (Aryan invasion theory) to create a disassociation of north and south furthering the crack in hindu community and to impose a law to hindu community(Christians had bible, muslims had quran but we never had a sinlge dharmashastra that determined the law for our entire community in everyregion it used to be varied(btw dharmashastra are purely books of law and only negligible amount of religion seeped into it that should atleast give you a hint that "caste" is not a religious thing but a socio-economic system that due to its corruption influenced the writers therefore seeping into shastras of the very later period)). what i said here is a only drop of info on the research i did for the past two years, (It is a mix of greed of some people in our community, the reactionary change in response to the islamic invasions and also the british manipulation to enable their way into our land). There are a lot of nuances while studying this topic but even if you spend time to research in a scientific manner you will too understand that this modern caste is not the core of our religion but was a system that was setup to manage earlier societies that went ridiculously corrupt. Even swami vivekananda in later years of his life realizing this: Swami Vivekananda told “caste” is a social custom and is not a part of Hindu religion. He told- Do I believe in caste? Caste is a social custom; religion has nothing to do with it. This comment needs to be on top. I myself being a backward teenager, used to face discrimination in a school, what people believe is one of the best schools in entire UP. Dalit means supressed, if there's a poor brahmin who's being supressed and troubled he/she will also be called dalit. Been studying Rape cases for a while now... Initially I used to be traumatized... But then I started thinking constructively abt the problem...
