It’s the new housing trend. Entire private neighbourhoods - sometimes spanning several hundreds of hectares and complete with luxury facilities, private schools and shops - all under extreme security and banned to non-residents.
In gated communities like MacDonald Highlands, residents can dine at private restaurants, play a game of tennis or enjoy a round of golf. They have their own personal trainers permanently on-call. But life here isn’t cheap. Just the obligatory gym and club memberships come to over $700 a month. And, in addition to the high maintenance charges, residents are expected to adopt a certain lifestyle and comply with strict regulations. At MacDonald Highlands, among the many rules, it is forbidden for children under 14 to walk around alone. Also banned is the use of skateboards and scooters and making noise after 10pm. Offences like not taking down Christmas lights within the required period or having a less-than-immaculate garden are all punished with a fine.
It used to be that these gated communities were home only to super-rich Americans but now they’re appearing across the globe and are shaping new residences of the future. Over in Marseille, security-conscious real estate owners have petitioned the City Council to erect barriers and close off entire neighborhoods. The first gated community has opened in Sofia, Bulgaria.
But as more and more people take refuge behind walls, will the remaining public space be turned into a giant ghetto?

I lived in a high end community like this for about 10 years. The rules/HOA, lack of friendly neighbors (because they were too busy working, traveling), got old. We left and live on 20 acres in the country on a home we built ourselves. I can even walk outside nude and no one will see me. That’s what you call freedom.

@@peachylover4598 , LOL. Nope, I’m the most grateful person imaginable. But I resist fake “religious faith” because it insults both nature and nature’s God. There is no god who puts entitled people in happy places while the less fortunate dwell in less pleasant places. To think otherwise is to worship false gods who benefit only ourselves. It’s a wondrous and wonderful world once we get over believing the gods want special people to have nicer, better experiences than the “less fortunate.”

I live in Vegas and have been into that community. Vegas is notorious for gated communities. Its a very transient town with lots of sketchy people coming through. Even lower priced communities are gated. Its the norm here and not a big deal that this documentary makes it out to be.
@miguelgonzalez6213

Yes and no. Its not a big deal until you realize it does keep the crime stats down. I have heard there was short spike in burglars and thieves sneaking through the gates, or posing as cleaning crews to get in, but lately that seems to have been quelched.

I've been through some of those communities in Nevada and some folks aren't very nice at all. They're not friendly to neighbors nor workers that maintain the place, they're all very untrusting of anyone and some are downright nasty, definitely not a way to live in a gated community.

My in-laws lived in an upscale 50+ gated community where truly there was no “community”. Too many HOA rules for me. I mean, ridiculous amounts of rules ! I told my husband I think there’s less rules in prison. Every house looked the same, no cars allowed parked in the driveway, you had to have exactly 13 APPROVED plants in your front yard … etc etc. I had once thought of moving to one of these. Nope. I changed my mind. I now have 5 acres, and can grow anything in my yards, not spray for dandelions and pretty much do what we want. No rules.

Have you lived in HOA and had bad experience? My first home in US is HOA. None of the restrictions bother me... like lawn has to be mowed everywhere which NON HOA houses should do too. No playing very loud music after 10 pm, which non HOA home shouldn't do or may be put the headphones on, not having fence in front, which I am okay with because with front yard fence it feels like I am entering penitentiary and not home. All of the homes doing same thing in the area makes it looking pleasing to eyes. Personally in our surrounding area NON HOA homes are pretty well maintained too but only thing I feel it takes is just one bad neighbor.

Safety in a gated community is very much in your head. I worked as a dispatcher at a sheriffs office and for 911 and I’ll tell you from personal experience that you are no more safe than anyone else. If someone wants what you have, they will get it and if they want to hurt you, they will. Criminals always find a way and they don’t care about the rules, or the old fart on gate duty. The domestic violence, boyfriends & girlfriends of divorcées and teenagers with too much money and not enough attention make gated communities their own little reality show. If you like it, then that’s awesome, but you are not more safe. I can tell you though that it makes it a LOT harder for the, police, fire department and ambulance to get to you when the codes aren’t updated with our agencies.

@@jdmccoy1999 Criminals like low hanging fruit too. It is going to keep out anyone but the locals. There is an order of magnitude more security with a gate guard than a codebox. Especially when you can buzz 10 houses and SOMEONE will let you in. That trick won't get you past the gate. Gate guard can also see if someone is REALLY carrying a pizza or food order. And can open the gate for a police car. I bet their security team is at least 40-50 people. If not significantly more. But even a codebox with a lot of cameras does a decent job of filtering. That is what my condo has. That one in NV looks to be mostly older folks though, a more upscale version of the Villages.

My wife and I live in older Mobile Home Park in West Long Beach CA, we pay $33.50 per month for 24hr security, safe enough to walk around at Night. Even with high housing costs in California, you won't need several million+ but it's still not cheap, you have to buy the home and the land. Think the costliest home where we live is around $850,000 or so( About 3 bdrms,,). We are seniors, our rent just went up to $1600.00 per month, for a 1309sq ft, 2 Bdrm 2bath 44 year old home. Still high for a mobile home in most other parts of the country. But, if you go look outside for at least a one Bdrm in a good Long Beach neighborhood, it's over $2000+ or so

Richard you would need millions and millions and have to follow so many rules. Also probably have a barbie wife work out. Have drinks at the bar and have a merry Xmas with Santa. Always be a good boy and follow the rules. And have perfect kids. And no dui.
