I used one years ago but eventually gave up when I found the surrounding area blackened. It had a shutter across the pins so the emission could be varied. The indicator light packed up,but that could have been the result of a friend knocking the machine off the shelf one day. I used to amuse myself making the pins spark with a match,recommended as the best way to clean them. Still got it somewhere,in the spare room,I think Could get it up and running again. Use an ionizer withith carbon brush now,which seems effective enough. Don't know how Medevac got hold of your model,but there is obviously no difference between models.

The surrounding area blackening is the unit doing its job. That blackening was in the air before.

We once had a medivac vacum cleaner. It worked very well and had the great feature that it has a suction and delivery hose, so that the air sucked up could be vented outside. It also had a motor that was in the airflow path, so using it around flammable gases could have been a very very bad idea!!! Sparks were visible.

I still have my amcor fan filter with with electrostatic filtration and carbon thread ioniser. Much better than the pin type. I think it's been on since purchase so early 2000s. My neon flickers badly, looks like 10/15 hz. Still great unit, big and loud but pulls lots of crap out of the air. Good for dog smells & soldering.

perhaps the reason the manufacture labelling advises against opening the unit - is because theres NOTHING inside ......I remember mountain breeze units were very expensive .....but I would guess these units only cost pennies to manufacture

With all that room inside, would it not be just as good to replace the neon with a LED? Plenty of room for a bridge rectifier and a dropper circuit.

@SeanBZA

Green clear LED plus a diode and use a 100k 0.5W resistor. Same brightness, a little flicker ( use 4 diodes as a bridge if you want) and will easily last as long as a neon lamp. Modern LED units will be quite bright at less than 1mA of current.
@bigclivedotcom
@bigclivedotcom 10 жыл бұрын
Even a couple of 220K resistors in series and either a bridge or two LEDs in inverse parallel would work. Modern LEDs are very bright at just half a milliamp.

Sorry to ask such a beginner question: I bought a Mountain Breeze in France several decades ago, but I live in Canada. I just took it out of the closet. Will it power up using 120 v North American power (with adapter of course), or does it need the full 220? I tried plugging it in but nothing lit up. Thanks.
@bigclivedotcom

It really needs at least 220V to operate if it's the classic voltage multiplier type.

Hey Clive I was wondering could you replace the NE indicator with a LED instead? or would this cause unwanted badness?
@bigclivedotcom
@bigclivedotcom 8 жыл бұрын
+MegaPrik No, it's perfectly viable, although it would be a bit more complicated than the neon unless youy used the Chinese trick of just using a high value resistor in series with a plain red LED.

bigclivedotcom Ah okay! thanks for the awesomely fast reply! Im going to attempt to make some Ionizers (My wife and son have major allergy issues) My only other concern is I live in the US and im afraid going with 22 103j caps won't amplify the voltage enough. I did buy the carbon fiber tape to try to compensate for the voltage drop between US and United Kingdom.I know just adding more capacitors isnt viable because they become less efficient. any thoughts?
@bigclivedotcom
@bigclivedotcom 8 жыл бұрын
+MegaPrik It might be worth trying one with double the stages just to see if it works. The current for ionisation is really low. The other option is to use a very small transformer to boost the voltage from 110 to 220. That could be either an autotransformer (just one tapped winding) or an isolated transformer, but with a wire linking the output side to the input side to provide a return path for the ionisation current. I've not tried this, but it's possible you could use a centre tapped 110/220 primary transformer and just use the primary side as a simple step-up transformer.

Alright, Thanks for all the info. I love your channel. I'm new to it but have watched almost 350 of your videos. I love how you not only take things apart but you also explain whats going on and most of the time draw a wiring diagram to explain whats going on (this helps people like me who know a lot about electronics but not how to read a wiring diagram. My father was a electrician and I got most my knowledge from him. That and doing what you do in our videos. Anyways thanks again for the replies and thanks for enacting the labor of putting these type of videos out there. They are freaking awesome and as long as you make them, Ill be watching them.

You mentioned that the air flow around the needles is important to its operation, but for safety the needles only poke out so far, I thought what if you completely enclose the needs in a tube and use a computer fan or something to force airflow through it would it work more efficiently? Would that also decrease the dusting issue around the unit? Maybe a future video ?
@bigclivedotcom
@bigclivedotcom 9 жыл бұрын
+Ste178uk The dust gathering around the unit is a desired function in that it's the stuff pulled from the air. There are ionisers that use a fan to disperse the charged air further into the room.

@bigclivedotcom
@bigclivedotcom 9 жыл бұрын
+Sky Shorba It's not. But I tend to use an iPad to record and upload the videos and for some reason the audio does not work in some browsers. Adjusting audio settings or using a different browser gives the audio. This seems especially common with Dolby style sound processors that divert the mono audio to the bass channel.

while I"m getting used to him saying neon as ne en ;) lets just call it the orange light. The one in one of my plugin 3 plug power strip? names slipping me , it's probably called an extension cord but for 3 2 prong USA plugs. But for whatever reason if I shine my rather bright CREE led headlamp at it. (and again it's rather dead) it actually begins to glow again. Very slightly but to make sure it's not some sort of mirror effect I aim the light slightly off center and it starts to flicker so clearly whatever is in the neon loves the Cree light. Although be a bit silly to be shining a very bright light at a neon indicator just to make it glow :P I always thought Inonizers /Ionisers were a bit of a Quack thing. And from what I've seen online thats pretty much it. I have one that supposedly is for um :P re growing hair hmmmI seemed to have lost mine :O Like your Tesla device. Sure turn the lights off you can see a tiny strip of blue electricity zapping about off a 9 volt but I keep it around because it's silly :P

They seem like two different types of technology with the same end use? Although the first is specifically for air ducts, and maybe can be packaged into a project box with a mains power wiring. Thanks in advance. Unfortunately, none of your cool UK versions are available on our Ebay site.

Hello bigclive, I wonder if you could help....the only similar-looking ioniser I can find currently being made is the Astrid Room Ioniser: www.astrid-ioniser.co.uk/large-area-room-ioniser-p-2.html Should I assume it is similar if effectiveness and reliability as the one you've torndown here - it's quite pricey at £55 so would prefer not to waste my money. +darren innes I think that Astrid is the only traditional ioniser being made in the UK now. Your other option is to try and get a secondhand unit on ebay with the Mountain Breeze units being my choice. The price of the Astrid probably reflects the specialist nature of the unit requiring hand manufacture. I think they are made in the UK and not China.

+darren innes Thanks for your swift response bigclive - I value your opinion. I have a dezac rio pyramid ioniser currently but wasn't sure it was working properly as it no longer 'sparked' when I put my finger near the needles (after 5 years of use). I also watched your other dezac teardown which wasnt too complimentary about the components. But, spurred on by your teardown, I opened it up and had a look. - fortunately, the dezak rio pyramid has a totally different circuit board. set-up. I've now kept it out of the protective pyramid case and can smell the difference and even feel the cool breeze leaving the pins, i.e. it is definitely working. Do you think it's safe to leave the bare components working without the upper pyramid case? Thanks.
@bigclivedotcom
@bigclivedotcom 9 жыл бұрын
+darren innes I wouldn't recommend leaving it uncovered as the components on the multiplier can deliver a full current mains shock. But if you give it a good clean on the outside and make sure that the needles are clean too, then a good test is to simply place it on a piece of white paper and run it for a week. When the week is up, lift the ioniser up and if there's a visible outline of it's base on the paper then it's working. Resist the temptation to keep checking the paper during the week as moving it will make the results less obvious.

iqair says that ionizers are health hazard - "Charged particles can also stick to your respiratory tract, where charged particles can settle in your windpipe and lungs and cause even more harm that if they’d just remained in the air. Studies show that these particles can penetrate deep into your respiratory system and cause both heart and lung conditions.2 The problem with negative ionization, though, is that it doesn’t actually remove pollutants from your indoor air - it just causes the particles to adhere themselves to nearby surfaces, where they’re easily stirred up by indoor activities like dusting, vacuuming, and ventilation. "
