Open office spaces are a drag for productivity. It’s super distracting, especially with all the foot traffic throughout the day and of course it’s true purpose is because it’s cheaper to throw up dry wall corridors than supply an actual office for employees. Stop with this innovation talk. Call it what it is. If open office space is so great than why do the higher ups get their own private office?
@PHlophe5 жыл бұрын
foot traffic ? you haven't been to Bombay .
@AngelLestat25 жыл бұрын
I dont think that is true, if you are in a cubic isolated, you might use part of your time for doing nothing because nobody is watching you. In Open Space if you have a doubt, you can ask and get an answer without leaving your desk. Of course we are talking about programming, in which everybody is focus in their own thing being quiet, no an call center.

I'm guessing the design, innovation, and mood talk are a cover for the actual purpose: Fitting more people into the same space. Office space is expensive, so if you can knock out moderate sized offices and replace them with claustrophobic cubicles then you've got a big win.
@Centrioless5 жыл бұрын
Ye this is what most ppl dont understand. Open office is mainly abt saving space.
@concept10275 жыл бұрын
Yeah, you're both clueless. Adobe is building a second office. Google owns a small town. Facebook literally built a village. Open office space has nothing to do with space, it's entirely to encourage collaboration and (especially) coerce productivity. It's success is debateable, despite the most profitable tech giants implementing it. Either way, it ain't about space.

@@concept1027 thank you, I wanted to go and explain this to each person complaining without probably having open offices themselves. Open office is very problematic, especially for coding and brainstorming. Coz most of our times, we are actually brainstorming and coding, instead of "collaborating" or reaching out to others. If we need to talk to others, we can go to them. Rest of the time, it's really important to have a peaceful, calm and distraction-free private workspace, which open office doesn't provide. My office has a closed office structure (cubicles), and I use earphones all the time, still my efficiency increases significantly when everyone else leaves the room, and it becomes calm and peaceful. I have no idea who (and why) thought open office will be a good workspace for brainstorming!
