In the late 1880s, Nubian soldiers from Sudan were incorporated into the British Army to fight in East Africa. The King’s African Rifles, as they would become known, were designated 4,000 acres of land to settle just outside of Nairobi, Kenya.
By 1915, the colonial government began categorising Kenyan tribes and settling them on “Native Reserves.” Nairobi was to be a European only settlements, and laws were passed restricted the natives from buying land in the highlands. The British intentionally classed the Nubians as a tribe not native to Kenya. Denied them a Native Reserve,
prior to Kenyan independence in 1963, no efforts were made by the British or the new Kenyan government to legitimise the Nubians as a recognised community in Kenya, and land rights to Kibera were not secured.
Upon independence, most Nubians became stateless. and the kibra was classified as an illegal settlement, removing the government from any obligation to provide even basic services in the region.
Population of Kibera at at independence was approximately 5000, but due to its proximity to Nairobi, Kibera became the go to destination for migrants fleeing rural poverty, ethnic conflicts and wars in neighbouring countries. By the turn of the century hundreds of thousands of people from all over Kenya and beyond called Kibera home.
Today there are anywhere between 250,000 and 1,200,000 people living in the biggest slum in Africa. Today I walked around, met incredible people and learned about the struggles and the mindset of the people who live here.
The quote was misattributed to Bob Marley. Actual quote is from Carter Goodwin Woodson, founder of the Association for study of African American Life and History.

@@jamesboth3785 if you're a non-local your chances of being attacked are very low. If they see you're Indian, Asian, or any other person that doesn't speak the same language as them and you seem to have money they will be friendly to you. Locals are usually robbed their phones, etc. Plus they fear attacking non-locals because if reported the response from police will be quick and can be arrested. If a local is attacked, the police don't even care to look for them.

That was a great video Joshua,i am a Kenyan and i have never been to kibera thank you for showing us how people live in that part of our great country.I wanted to comment on the timber house 39:44 those were the old colonial houses and they date back to the colonial times, after independent most people copied the British way of life and that is the reason you can see such houses which were build in the 1960s.The empire had both positive and negative impacts on Kenya, enjoy your stay in Kenya mate

😂😂😂 ludicrous is what your comment is! My career is regional integration, and I can confidently tell you that without the British, Kenya would have been worse than Uganda and Tanzania, where there is more arable land. The British stole wealth from our neighbours to make their headquarters in Nairobi more comfortable. That is why Kenya has always been ahead economically. They gave us efficiency in terms of trade by introducing a single currency called the East African shilling that saved money without the need to have exchange rates, gave us the longest railway, which we mismanaged, and gave us regional East Africa Airways, which we looted. Today we are struggling to create the same system they left in the name of the East African Community, but even the reintroduction of the East African shilling in 2024 remains in doubt. This thing we are now calling the United States of Africa, the British had tried to unite us way before the European Union was conceived. The French destroyed the francophone countries, but the British in Kenya loved Kenya so much they had no intentions of destroying it. That is why nobody blames the British in any coups because instability was never their approach. You have to give them credit like the locals have. That is a fact. Our enemies are our own leaders who took over and became greedy.

@@BS-kl9yf i havent mentioned anything about our leaders .so my take on them is another story . 2ndly we have to get out of the mentality that british loved us and saved us from the shackles of whoever it was saving us from . Its 21st centuary and its appaling to see ppl still dont know the motive behind colonization of kenya . I wish what u are saying was true .but the british and their european friends never and i repeat NEVER had kenya's intrest in their minds . They were so greedy to the extent they went far enough to dehumanize ppl . Whatever thy created in africa the currency or transportation was created for thr interest .poor them thy thought colonization would last. If thy really cared as you are putting out there why did they treat african's poorly and not equal They looted stole whatever thy wanted to steal and crippled africa . OUR GOVERMENTS since tht is a hot topic lets dive in to that . Corrupt govts are not our only problem . Our main problem is our mindset that only europeans can knock sense into us and get us back to our feet .THE SAME PPL THAT COLONIZED AND LOOTED US CAN NOT BE OUR SAVIOURS. We can do much better if we get out of tht mentality.

@@BS-kl9yf 😂😂 the British did not have the natives in mind. Kenya was meant to be a white mans country. Don’t act like the British developed Kenya for Kenyans. The British only had one motive and that was to make the British empire wealthy at ALL COSTS! Heck the British are still benefiting from Kenya it’s called neo colonialism!
@BS-kl9yf
@BS-kl9yf Жыл бұрын
@@africanexcellencemovement1266 I never said they had the natives in mind. It is easy to loot from a stable country through trade deals like what Ruto signed few months ago with the EU, than to try loot from an unstable country like Somalia. They developed Kenya as much as possible to make their looting easy. In that process, Kenya became rich from the Tanzanian and Ugandan taxes. That should be simple logic that you ought not to struggle with. The railway was not developed for Kenyans to go for holiday in Mombasa, it was to extract products from Uganda to the harbour, as fast as possible. That is the same railway we abandoned and are currently trying to rebuild to export our agricultural products. So what was the stupidity in destroying what we already had, built for us without any loan, then now taking a loan from China to rebuild? The French destroyed the infrastructure they had built in Guinea, the Portuguese poured concrete on what they had built in Mozambique, while the British handed everything they had built intact including the land with cash crops we still enjoy in Kericho and other regions. That was the main point in this comment. That we became rich from the theft and development that the British created for themselves, while they colonized us and our neighbors. I believe that is plain simple English. Do you still need further interpretation?

Austin spoke the truth most NGOS are the reason for the slums and poverty in rural and remote parts of Kenya. They create a dependency syndrome among the people thereby making the people somehow lazy to improve their lives and that's what the NGOS want and have perfected the art. The money is just causing more slums and going into peoples pockets or even back to their country of origin in dubious ways as part of capacity building expenses and so on

23:21 I think multi- generational (plus extended family) housing projects would entirely eradicate slums and mitigate poverty to where after a few generations it would be entirely eradicated. Keep a society at large capitalist but choose to live together in communes of 100 to 200 extended family members which can cooperatively pool wages into a single large building with all amenities covered. Every commune could appoint an accountant and investor, to develop a business syndicate as well as to delegate their responsibilities. There’s strength in numbers, and since these communes would all be family; any corruption would be extremely rare by default since compassion/ mutual respect for one another is the natural predisposition. Food for thought.

It’s funny how the guy talks about Africans were taught by Europeans but really it’s the other way around, moors conquered Europe and taught them sciences, mathematics and also how to keep livestock etc, it’s a port of history that’s not talked about enough, they also ruled Spain for over 800 years and were the ones to first build castles there. Africa we need to gain knowledge of self and not allow our narrative to be restricted

Very true about the Moors, conquerers of Spain, Colonisers of Europe. Do you have any good sources for pre-colonial history in Africa, really want to know more, not sure where to find the information though.

@@GoingGlobull the history is vast and too expanse for me to point at one direction, if you want to gain some small gems then watch Hidden Colours documentary it’s a docu-series with 5 eps out, all focus on different subject mattders that encompass the Afrodiaspora, FYI the eps are pretty long. Like hour plus per ep

@@2nang4dis The earliest fortifications originated in the Indus Valley, Europe, Egypt, and China where settlements were protected by large walls. In Northern Europe, hill forts were first developed in the Bronze Age, which then proliferated across Europe in the Iron Age hundreds of years before Moors were invading Europe. Romans built fortresses all over their empire, Greeks also and Celts built many hill fortresses with huge earthen work ramparts, although the word castle is of later era and the Medieval castles were developed in different ways due to warfare strategies changing that does not detract from the ability of Romans, for example, in building techniques every bit as advanced as architecture for the next thousand years by any culture. Livestock was kept by various peoples for thousands of years before Moors invaded anyone. Goats first domesticated in the Indus valley 8,500 BC as example. Mathematics is evidenced by many cultures in many forms all over the world stretching back thousands of years, long before Moors were invading. Such as Druids building heavy tombs / stone circles that aligned with solstices, displaying understanding of astronomical time periods. The study of mathematics in written form goes back to 6th century BC with Pythagoreans, they coined term *mathematics* from the Greek μάθημα (mathema), meaning "subject of instruction". Algebra was laid as foundation first, as far as historians know, in India. History did not start with any one race or peoples.
