It should be noted that the host for this visit was the PAG Commander and Presidential Pilot USAF Col. David Banholzer. He tragically passed away in late 2016 after a courageous battle with cancer. Met him just a few times but I knew some of the pilots and navs in PAG that knew him best. Great guy, dedicated officer and tremendous pilot. He left behind a beautiful family. I always enjoy stories about AF1. I remember a special TV show once, where they interviewed the chief steward, and he commented on a surprise trip to Iraq during the Bush years. There are a lot of things on that plane they will never tell us about. I was at Cades cove when Bush was president and they were getting ready for his visit the next day. One of the Secret Service agents took me a tour of how they secured the location and their command truck. He was very nice. I asked him how much I was looking right at and not seeing and he said, "there is a lot, but I can't show it for security reasons."

There could have been some pretty heavy leads that day and I'm sure the station disregarded them. In-fact the station disregard hundreds of potential stories every day. Trust me it was not a slow day, if anything, it was way more busy. What is so strange about this is that it has no glass cockpit and still has the old analog instruments. This was first used by GHW Bush (1988-1992). The 747-400 came out in 1988 so what model is this, a 300? Glass cockpits came out on US airlines in the early 80's, first with the MD-80 and then with the 757/767 series which had roughly the same cockpits. Does anyone know why Air Force One was not a 400 series when they were already 2 years old? Was it because they started building this plane prior to its introduction? Thanks,

The other 30% was on anti Aircraft & radar countermeasures, including missile defense systems & people dont know this but above where ever airforce 1 flys the Satellites fly with it, basically they have task NSA satellites moving where ever the plane goes & flys & also the Helicopter Marine 1 as well & all the secret service support aircraft as well, look up Bear Grills & Obama, you will see all the support aircraft just for Obama to take a hike with Bear Grills ? cheers :) Also its the comms department with in the lower part of the plane that controls all the defence of the plane, not the pilots, all they do is fly by the seat of their pants. :)

The cockpit instrumentation is about as old school as you can get anymore. I wonder how challenging it is to still find parts for that plane. There aren't a whole lot of 747-200s still flying anymore; and most other operators are retiring their much more modern 747-400s.

They are replacing them with the 747-8. The current Airforce Ones are old as hell and need to be replaced. They are the 747-200 model and are beyond their 30 year lifespan. They don't even make parts for them anymore. So if something breaks they are replacing it with old ass refurbished parts if they don't have the part new. It's sort of disgraceful that the president is flying around in this old hunk of junk.

Air Force one is only named that if POTUS is on board, without him on board, it's called Executive One.

Justin Lareaux partially right. Executive One is the name given to a commercial airplane carrying the President, but only Carter did it. When Potus isn't onboard, it is simply called "VC number" .

If not carrying POTUS (Air Force One) or VPOTUS (Air Force Two) then the call sign is the tail number (28000 or 29000) prefixed by SAM (for Special Air Mission) if DVs are aboard, and VENUS if not. Executive One is an aircraft carrying POTUS that isn't operated by the armed services.
