I doubt one would notice most of the time. It doesn't rain here much. It sprinkles for months at a time. We don't carry umbrellas. Most days, looking out the window, its hard to tell if its raining or not. The drops aren't big enough so you have to look at the tops of parked cars or see if any drops are hitting the puddles. But its not like back east where you get thunder and lightening, heavy downpours with hail and the like. Its more like a never ending opening to Bambi - din din din little April showers....but even that would be a heavy rain:)

They were losing money for almost 20 years, so tax credit. Similarly to you, if you losing money for small business, you can get tax credit for future years. Also here in Canada, the minimum wage for Amazon employees is 19/hour, that's good(if people's feels exploited they would quit like a normal person) and I know, driving throughout the city and walking to a front door must be life threatening. The reason why Amazons prices is so cheap is because they spend so much more money making it cheap(to remove competition) to a point that sometimes they wont even reach their profitable point.

In the case of Amazon's I think it is prudent to keep both eyes open. John D Rocker feller man had a monopoly of oil industry, he set a strong foundation for oil refining standards. Which benefitted mankind immensly At the same time, he was causing plenty of busniess and workers to go out of work to stamp out competition. How many careers and livilhood have he stamped out? Surprisingly, Amazon doesn’t order any of its products from itself. I’m an Amazon employee and when we get things like new chairs etc they specifically state we can NOT get them from Amazon.com. It has something to do with the taxes etc. So yea Amazon surprisingly buys a LOT of stuff they could be saving money on, from outside businesses.

I do not know how much this architecture helps Amazon's productivity but the company is doing very well. I wish we had more of these spaces all over the world. The sterile and noisy open-office model saves companies money but are horrible. It is frustrating how many companies are still adopting it for short-term cost perspectives only.

This is a great idea, but I can't help but be sickened by how much money they spend on comforting these highly paid people vs. the sweat-shops they operate for fulfillment centers. If you work in the spheres, you've got an indoor forest to help sooth your working nerves, paths to walk, blah blah blah. If you work in the fulfillment center, you can't take a pee without being penalized for "unproductivity." "Hey check out all these open beautiful work spaces for me to get some work done in!" says a highly paid coder. "We can relax in here and talk for a bit." Meanwhile... "Hey check out the activity monitor that tracks my every movement!" says the underpaid fulfillment worker. "We can't talk for long though, I've got..." cut off by the activity monitor vibrating, flashing a red light, claxtons going off.

Was there a spa on site, how about a relaxation room? What about some of those sleeping pods that all them coders are always talking about? oh I know... they at least put in a hot tub out back, that way people could at least relax after their long day of work.... Right? there was something at the fulfillment center that helped make the monotony and stress of that job better? I mean did you have an indoor rainforest? The least they could do would be to put some kind of trail around the property of the fulfillment center, that seems to be at least the minimum that they could do to provide some kind of relaxing element for the work environment. Well birth rates continue to fall, so the population is expected to never break 12 billion. Also, it truly seems like vertical farming / factory farming of plants has the potential to provide organic foods for a fraction of the resources, and land usage. It won't come soon, it will probably take 50 - 100 years, but it is believed that we will be able to provide all of the world's food with somewhere between 5-10% of the land we use today. If that is coupled with only the 50% estimated increase in total population, there should be a lot of land that opens up for more parks and forests in the future. Humanity right now is just at an incredibly tough transitory period...think of it as the awkward and painful puberty of humanity.
