The Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota is home to the Oglala Lakota nation - people whose ancestors survived generations of oppression and violence. Today, half live below the poverty line and many go without basics like running water. Life expectancy for Lakota men is 47 and for women is 53, lower than any country in the world. That was before the pandemic. NBCLX contributors Martin Markovits and Niko Kyriakou take us inside a Native American community fighting for its life.

The navajo nation creats most of its own problems though. The chapter houses VERY often squander away funds in liquid assets and fail to take care of its people especially like Nez or Joe Surley just try and give away free crap so the navajo people are happy for their little 1000$ check for relief funds or a free cell phone with minutes. But when it comes to real care *scoff*. Good examples in 2013 the U.S gov gave them 6 BILLION to bring water, gas and electric to as many rual areas as they can. Instead the nation squandered away 4 billion and spent 2 on low income housing in Shiprock which now over half lay in waste and redid the road from Gallup to Shiprock which they never completed. Then 2020 the elders took the first relief fund that's why the US had to go distribute it personally the second time and everyone got pissed at them but again the chapter houses squandered ALL those funds the first time. They tried to do the same to the medical supplies sent and then tried to hide them in the SAME storage shed (same number even) in Shiprock and window rock again. And I hate to say 60+% of all the rapes and kidnapping on the navajo nation is committed by its own people, same with the alcohol. They say dry rez but yet they'll fund massive casino bars still on thr rez and then support bars just right off the reservation. And this wasn't wasn't u.s. government putting them there like what's been being said. No those bars are bought, owned and stocked by the elders cause they know alcohol keeps people subservient, can't vote if youre too drunk to know what's going on. So many of these problems are from the stubbornness of the nation as well as the complete cruption of the navajo nation government.

@@TradBarbie We are very self sufficient, strong, and resilient people who come from a life gifted to us by our ancestors. Your comment is one of many misunderstandings of our indigenous people, we do not get handouts or "free money" and we certainly don't have "free homes". Nothing in this world is free. We work hard for what we have just like the rest of society. Some people are less fortunate than others and that stems from a lot of personal mishap that each individual has their own experience with. That's not for any of us to judge or make disrespectful comments on. I hope this helps you understand a little bit more about our people I'm sorry that you don't have a clear understanding or any sort of compassion.

This breaks my heart. My mother was born on Pine Ridge Rez, she left there walking when she was 12. I think due to being abused by her father. My mother passed away at 47 yes due to liver failure. I never knew my mother but I missed her, always will. I was raised by whites in Oklahoma, which wasn't good. The first time I visited Pine Ridge I was 18. I started crying and couldn't stop. How could the government do this to anyone. It was the saddest place I had ever seen. I'm proud to be Lakota and know I came from these strong people.

So rather than OUR own people taking you in, a white family took u in. Try to be thankful for what you have now. You sound like you are doing ok and have the right mindset but who knows what could have happened to you, maybe buried next to your mother, be thankful for what you have and who you are now. I don't blame White people for what OUR people are going through. WE have to be better than the past. WE have to get the strength, the love and the compassion to move on, not DWELL on the past!! We don't cry on past BS, we move on, move forward. I got off the REZ and now I am back with my education. White people and the government now are NOT to blame. I am so tired of hearing my own people being racists, "white this white that, government this and that." We need to STOP feeling sorry for ourselves and do FUCKING something about it. Don't hold our hands out for help and DO for our family, DO for our kids, grandkids and elders!!! Get off our asses and get educated!! IF anyone is to blame is our own sovereign government, chapters who are in charge of funding THEY receive from the U.S government and why we don't have the very basic water, electricity, and decent housing, etc!! Not living in what looks like a 3rd world war torn country. I grew up in this shit!! I don't cry and feel sorry for myself. I got an education, have a good wage, and own my own home! We need to instill this in our children/grandkids, and family period!!!

I love native Americans. Some of the coolest people I've met. My mother worked at a casino, and because of their generous health care a doctor caught her cancer, removed it, and gave us 6 more years with her. The tribe was proactive, worked hard, built a casino, hotels, restaurants, and a golf course. They donate hundreds of thousands to local schools every year. It may not be the answer for every tribe, but good leadership is needed. The blame game and more handouts are never the answer.

Since the government put them in such a bad situation, they definitely should help. Idk much about farming, but the land they’re on looks so dry, so I’m unsure if they could seek out jobs that way. It’s crazy how up-to-date and colonialized things seem there. But they’re so behind when it comes to infrastructure, government and businesses. It was like they were put there to die out. Idk if it’s possible to really yield off the land like they used to. Very sad and idk what would fix that situation.

I agree people can be poor as in not having $ or food but there is no reason to live in squalor with all the garbage strewn about the yards and countryside. Just looking at the junk could make people more depressed I think. Even having some posters on the walls of the homes would be better than looking at holes or marked up walls. Something to look at that isn't unpainted or scratched up.. JMO

I was taught the being poor doesnot mean being dirty. I am 1/2 Cherokee, we were poor but never realized it until I was in my teens. My Mother made our clothes, our yard was beautiful...Mom used cuttings from neighbors to plant. Had a veg garden, canned all that she could. I am so grateful for all that I have, i am 81yo and don't have "new" things in my house. I keep everything in good condition and am proud of the environment, inside and outside. The thing that needs to be learned is pride...that starts in the home. Pride in ones environment is the first step in succeeding.This is hard work but anything worth having requires hard work. Teaching the childern that life requires them to keep their rooms neat and help with the chores outside.These things are the basis for pride.

Instead of giving the nazis in Ukraine billions of tax payer dollars we should be building infrastructure and proper homes and gardens on the Indian reservations and outlaw those damned coke machines . American politicians are responsible for the decay of America and for many countries around the world. Not one war we caused was “for democracy” not one. We had no business or right to overthrow Ghadaffi. He had better schools for his people than America. We had no right to start a war with Syria. We invented and funded the Al qaeda and isis terrorists . We had no right to start the war in Yemen. Because of our evil and corrupt politicians our country, America, is guilty of war crimes. How do any of us live with that? We can’t. The evil and corrupt politicians on both sides , in positions high and low must be fired in order for our country to deserve to move forward.

@@uzumate9976 yeah the reason they don't live in other parts of the country is because a lot of them have land on the reservation, and it's free they don't have to pay any taxes or mortgages. Most people think all tribes are rich from Casino money. As you can see this is not the case. A black man I worked with said he wanted to be rich like all the Indians. I did not tell him about my native heritage. So, I asked him this: How would you like to wake up every morning on a plantation your ancestors worked? How would you like to walk the same floors and sleep in the same place your ancestors did? Now think about the natives that walk in the same footsteps and sleep in the same place their ancestors have done since being thrown on land forced upon them. My mother didn't tell me about my heritage until I was old enough to defend myself because she told me there were bad people out there that didn't like who we were, and that I was being bullied in school as it was. My son moved in with me a few weeks ago and he said he has corrected people when they ask if he's Mexican, which is a common mistake. Lots of Natives in the old days taught their children Spanish to pass as Mexicans because some people were still killing natives up into the early to mind 1900s for sport.

There is beauty there sure but one can't help but look out and notice the baron land mostly unfit for crops or livestock . Sadly alot of reservations look the same. All their prime land was stolen and they were put on wastelands. Drove through the black hills (stolen land) and saw the Beautiful scenery and big houses and couldn't help but feel angry. We have similar situations right here in Southern California, lonely desert towns out in the middle of nowhere. Only solution for young people is to leave. Pack your bags, head to LA to go to school, and stay in LA to work. If you stay where you are, you're guaranteed a very short brutal life of addiction, violence, and hopelessness. Only solution is to leave. Doesn't mean you can't come back to visit, keep in touch with friends, maybe even buy a vacation home there. But you have to leave..

Regarding Major Static X comment. I agree that we as individuals can join together and help the natives on these reservations ourselves one reservation at a time starting with pine ridge reservation. We can donate or purchase building materials to repair and upgrade their housing, we can bring in plows and soil and compost plantd and seeds to build up the land so gardens can be grown, commodities can be grown, greenhouses can be built, organize groups on reservations to gather all the trash on their land and build a recycling center or remove it and take it to a recycling facility, food, blankets, appliances can be purchased or donated, volunteers can help to make repairs, build new housing and buildings, etc. So much can be done to give them a helping hand and improve their quality if life. We have to step up and try to help them because many r perishing and children and adults have the highest suicide rates in America. Have a heart people! I am in on your idea Major Static. How do we go about setting up a Go Fund for pine ridge reservation? Those who want to help by donating whatever they r able to,.others may wish to donate their labor, others can donate seeds, compost, organic soil, wood and nails and carpentry skills can be donated, let's do this! All things r possible when enough helping people join together with a common goal. This is doable. I pray that people will have compassion for those suffering on pine ridge reservation. Remember Jesus Christ himself said when u help the needy u r helping Him. He took it personally. He said "Feed the hungry, clothe the naked, give unto others and so shall it be given to u". People we can't take the things we posses and money we have with us when we leave this life. Let's use it for a higher purpose by helping the native people.

Realistically. It’s hard to be an independent territory with its own legal system and talk about federal money for economic development. Unfortunately that’s not how it works. Federal and state money belongs to people who pay taxes and obey the federal and state law . Reservations have many legal privileges and autonomy . One of the counties that is part of Pine Ridge is the poorest in the entire USA. Amputation rates due to diabetes are 3-4x the US average. Death attributable to diabetes is 3x the US average. Life expectancy is the lowest in the US. Infant mortality is 5x the US average. The unemployment rate is 89%. I don't think there are easy answers to this, and it is important for the empowerment of the people of Pine Ridge to find answers themselves rather than have "help" imposed upon them - but - employment is what creates stability and opportunity. Surely investment in industry & commerce just outside the reservation that provides jobs for people living there would make a positive impact?

As the world implodes I would see such a project as a great opportunity, although they need a lot of support to set them off, through One Spirit and Thunder Valley, for example. @@NowIknow24345 There are far higher numbers, of Black Americans making integration with American society much easier, as they could also form their own mini-communities within American societies, but the natives do not have the numbers to do that. And then there is the question of whether they wish to do so, for they had a way of life that was one with the Will and Wishes of the Great Spirit, and deeply connected to his Temple, namely the beauty of the vast swathes of natural wilderness. This way of life was desecrated leaving natives upon reservations, a lifestyle that was dependent upon the ruling whites, and blacks, as their sustainability had been removed through the slaughter of their game, and thefts of their lands The Africans who came had no allegiance in the US to any lands, or customs there, as they left them behind in their homeland. It is this loyalty to the Great Spirit that should be applauded, as to have the audacity to fight the oppressors despite being vastly outnumbered is remarkable. Hope is entering these tribes again, as their spirituality is bringing forth many prophecies that recognise the need to return to the old ways of living. Thus, we all have much to thank them for, as they have managed to keep alive a genuine faith that will lead to spiritual ascent and a beautiful earth again, by not adapting to the ways of the white man, simply to get on in life, and have high-paying jobs, flashy cars, and large bank accounts. This is why the American govt hates them, along with the fact that they still remain the only nation to defeat their army. Long live the Lakota, a great nation, despite the hate of the masses, and may others hearken to their calls for a New Age, and new awakening, for soon it will be too late to turn back from the ways of the white man, that have been so gleefully adapted by other races who have sold their souls to Satan!!!

Their spiritual ways barred them, and ALL their children placed in schools of immense cruelty, where hundreds were killed. Many women and children murdered by soldiers, and tribes forces to starve, and walk miles, so whites, blacks and Latinos could use their land to become affluent. I know blacks suffered too, but not on the levels of the American Indians, in north and south America. And to imagine that adapting to the ways of the white colonialists is a success is ridiculous from where I am standing, when everywhere we can see the death of the planet unfolding due to these material excrescences of the modern world, which was exacerbated by these white settlers. The old ways of the indigenous tribes should have ben built upon to ensure our survival, and development, not decimated. :et us pray it is not too late to make these evils and wrongs good, for the karma when men break the natural laws is extremely severe, and this is why we are now about to enter the Apocalypse. Let us hope men awaken before it is too late, and give up their pursuit of material riches, and acknowledge the courage of the Lakota, and other like-minded peoples across the globe.

@@nialloneill5097 I am not trying to trivialize the horrific things that happened to native people. I am trying to make you see the bigger picture here. Dwelling on the past isn't going to change anything. Because you can't change the past but you can change the future. We are in 2022, yearning for lifestyles from the past isn't going to improve native people 's lives. They have to move on and evolve to compete in today's America. They have to learn to be more organized as a group. They have to help themselves because no one is going to come to help them. They could easily create their own business to create revenue to improve their living conditions. But they choose not to. For example just look at the Mexicans. They come over the border with nothing and do low jobs like housekeeping and garden work until their have enough money to start their own business. Then they become their own bosses and create their own neighborhoods with their own shops, schools and clinic. America is a capitalistic country, you cannot expect to live a traditional tribal lifestyle with "modern" advances. You have to play the capitalistic game like the whites, blacks, Asians and Latinos do. Otherwise your lives will never improve, you will continue to live in poverty in the future.

I keep pressing the issues of native people. My mother's people. Were part Seminole. And my dad were part Cherokee how ever I have little Indian blood. My self. Yet I feel a strong connection. And grew up with Indian. Or native children. I only wish. That the rest of the country could acknowledge. What is happening to so many. On reservations. All I can say is stay strong. I know it's not much. To say. But my prayers are with you. Wherever that might be.

I feel that people drive by the reservations everyday ... They truly never get to see the devastation that some reservations go thru ... They feel Indian people get free money.... And any indigenous people for that matter just somehow from the outside be ok .... But when they enter the gates then you have entered there personal hell .... Something that should be beautiful is rotting .... I look at the children .. the poverty and how the last generation was lead astray from there correct path ... The stories the spirits the ceremonies ...the prayers the Dances ... all try'd to be washed away... Children taken ... Some killed. Many killed for that fact .. still so many women and children and some men as well missing ... Or murders go un searched ... Why ? Why can't they be treated finally as fucking equal ... As beautiful human beings .. I hardly see indigenous people anymore... I have seen a few lately more then I have in a very long time... That's very humbling ... I hope one day the world can finally see the beauty in the people and there ways.... That goes back as far as anyone else's ways do ... To be treated equal is a beautiful thing ... Don't forget your ways ... Be proud to say I am me ... Even if some days you look in the mirror and don't feel so proud ... Heads up ... For your worth it .. don't let them accomplish what they set out to do ... Never Forget ... Let that music that dance fill you with spirit... Then you will feel proud again .. feel the fire💯❤️😉

There is a massive check from the treaties available to the tribes to take but they will not. The land is not going to come back to the tribe -- but there is compensation. No one wants to set up businesses on the reservation because no one is willing to work and the buildings become trashed.

You got it, welfare does not help, I think if the free money stopped completely, the natives would be forced to work and develope an economically viable society. It would hurt for a generation or 2, but in the future, they would all be much better off. The level that they are at now will not change if the checks keep coming.

The Fort Laramie treaty is binding and valid still to this day. The supreme court has already started to set the precedent of acknowledging treaties with Native Americans in Oklahoma. With Fort Laramie, the compensation, or reparation, you speak of is for the illegal stealing of the black hills and its gold. But to accept that money is to legitimize and accept that stealing as well as throw the sacrifices and murders of our ancestors to protect those lands under the bus, so it will never happen, but Lakota population numbers continue to grow, the culture prospers, and it is only a matter of time until the Lakota amass enough capital to hold the US government accountable in the high courts and see those lands rightfully returned.

Truly, what can we do to help? This is criminal and I’ve felt this all my life. People are becoming more self-sustainable with gardens and rainwater capture. Would it help to bring help with these things, if people would come and help set up a good water supply and a way to grow good food? I was just there, and no asked me for money - they asked if we had any water, or any food. It’s been criminal for hundreds of years what has happened. You deserve so much better than this.

This is sad. But what I don't understand is pretty much every country, every nation have lost a war at some point, but somehow they managed to normalize things eventually. Why can't Native indian prosper? What is stopping them to become wealthier? I am NOT criticizing them. It's just a question.
@robertochina343

I think that's more of a poor people question since there are wealthy Native Americans as well as Gypsies, and Haitians. Every country, religion, race have their rich and poor classes. In order to be rich someone must be poor just as for someone to win a race someone must lose. I feel this sort of poverty is a curse that every nation has to deal with.
@mikemeier1817
@mikemeier1817 2 жыл бұрын
"Normalize" is a pretty loaded term. Normalize doesn't mean that things are okay, it's just normal, expected. These people are living on the land given to them by the US government. The Fort Laramie treaty ensured the Lakota a large swath of land that covers almost half of three states in the Midwest, the US government broke this treaty because they wanted the good land and resources for themselves, and forced the Lakota onto the worst land that has virtually no soil to grow food. So now white scholars have flipped the narrative to make people ask why Natives don't leave to prosper when they should be prospering on their own land as promised.
