There is no evidence he did more during that exam than put his hand on the boy's leg. However, all care providers, teachers and counselors should learn from this. Never be alone with a child if you are not related. Always make sure that there is at least one other adult present. Even then, there is good reason to never be alone with even a related child or even someone who is underage.

I cried. I was never able to get justice for what happened to me at the hands of my great grandfather as a 7 year old boy. He died when I was 12. He had done what he did to me to his entire family and that family circled the wagons. Boys and girls. Daughters and sons. Grandchildren and great grandchildren. I was the first to speak on it and nothing was done by the police. I'm 47. I've been to prison and have a felony all due to alcohol. I was a good christian up until I was 7 and then I just started to spiral down from there. My grades plummeted. I started getting in trouble all the time. Started ditching school. Didn't graduate. Shoplifting and stole a car as a juvenile. Moved on to drugs to stuff the shame, the guilt and pain. Never having any closer to the trauma. I wished so much that he were still alive for so long so that I could take from him what he stole from me. To hurt him. To hurt him bad. To even want to slowly torture him to death. All of which made my spiral down even more depressing. I tried writing a letter to him. To say all the things I couldn't say to him while he was alive and I burned it, hoping it would give me some form of peace or closure. It never did. I went to prison 3 years ago and since I've been out, I've completely grabbed my life by the horns and have been sober from all things, save cigarettes, since. I've been going to church for the first time since I was 16 and have slowly found healing but these scars never go away and they never will. I got joy watching this episode of this POS and it made me feel better. I hope nobody has to ever go through what any of us went through as children. I hope that they finally come up with some way to help us get through the trauma and to let us feel that we're good still and we weren't lying and we matter. A lot of us have ended up in jails and prisons because of the wreckage that comes from sexual abuse who wouldn't have ended up there if this thing doesn't happen. These people do not deserve an opportunity to be placed in protective custody and given protection from their crimes to children. They need to be placed in general population with the other inmates and let the punishment fit the crime. I'm sorry. This not a very christian thing to say but it's the only way to stop most of the abuse from continuing.

I'm so sorry for what happened to you and that your family didn't protect you. Have you told them how you feel about that? I think the best help for you, is being honest about what you experienced and exactly how you feel. You might be concerned about hurting your family members feelings, but, they should hear now how their blindness lead to your abuse. And who knows, maybe you will give one of them the courage to speak up as well. It sounds like there are many that need to. Congratulations on getting your life together. I have not had any of your experience, but I think what you have done to turn your life around is probably one of the most difficult journeys any person can undertake. You are a BADASS! Please don't ever forget that! When you are tempted to turn to one of your former vices (the devil is always looking for an opportunity), remember that this gift is for you. It's a gift that no one else can ever give you, only you can give it to yourself! Man, I’m so sorry that happened to you. I know my words are no comfort, but I hope at the very least it shows you that you are worthy, you are loved, you did not deserve what happened to you , you are more than your trauma & it wasn’t your fault. Rest assured when your day comes at least you won’t have to worry about bumping into him up there, because anyone who’d harm a child like that gets sent straight to the gates of hell. So he’s paying for what he did to you & your family & will for all of eternity. Keep your chin up friend, find a counselor or someone you can talk to. I too struggled with multiple childhood traumas, and the culture of family and community complacency (to this day,) brought a devastation to my very core, I questioned why would anyone continue living in a world with so much evil, but live I did. I have studied many religions throughout my life from a sort of scientific view so I was already familiar with Buddhist practices and I found healing listening to Thich Nhat Hahn ( Plum Village) on KZbin. I'm from Pine Ridge Reservation, I remember this whole tragic chapter on the Rez. Parents were talking about it amongst themselves, and I heard about it when I took my son to the hospital. Amazingly the pedophile was still there seeing kids after he was exposed. Dr Butterbtodt was one of the best Drs. to serve the people of the Rez. I had voiced my concerns to about this. He looked like he was furious. He told me " he's got to go" meaning Webber. He told me that legal authorities needed to get involved, but it was going slow. Bill Pourier is largely responsible for this. He's an alcoholic drug user, who only cared about his job at the time. You saw him say it himself. He could have done something early on, but he didn't. Let the spineless weakling carry that burden to hell with him!!!

There’s such a negative stigma attached to boys who are sexually abused, especially when the perpetrator is a male. That has to stop. What they’ve experienced was NOT their fault, and they are never to blame. I pray that all of his victims (I’m sure there are many of them out there who never came forward) find peace and healing. The blame, shame, and guilt belongs to the perpetrator, not you. All of these children lacked guidance, love, stability, and support - and now they are left with a tangled web that is intertwined with trauma and pain. It’s absolutely heartbreaking!

When I worked for the IHS, Crownpoint Navajo Reservation, whenever I reported one of those horrific physicians, therapists, professional staff, they were questioned, found guilty and fired from Crownpoint. Word spreads quickly on the Reservation and my patients and others came to me with their complaints. Damn that IHS.

Why aren't we sending qualified Native Americans (free) to medical school and to train in all variety of medical modalities with requirement to serve on Reservations for at least 5 years after training? No one should be examined by anyone medical, these days, unless the patients as a designated person to present in the room with them !

We do. My husband was the first Physician Assistant to graduate back in 1996. It's been around since 1978 and has helped many health professionals earn their degree. It's a great scholarship program that not only covers all your expenses but gives you a healthy monthly stypend to live on. In return for receiving it you agree to work in an IHS location for the same number of years you received the scholarship. If you work in a critical needs area, like Pine Ridge, you can repay your time faster. Anyone, of any race, can apply for an IHS loan repayment program that will pay on your loans $20,000 a year for two years of service in a critical needs hospital. I know of many doctors and nurses who have participated in the program.

It is designated that someone be in the room for an exam. Most doctors want this protection for themselves as well as the patients. If you paid attention to the story, he took advantage of these children in his home. He was only seeing boys in the clinic because that's how he was finding the ones who would be most vulnerable. The children with terrible parents and terrible home life were the ones he was shopping for.

I attended a boarding school for my high school years in the 1990s. Trust me, whenever a professional who works with minors exhibits any type of weird/suspect behavior, the word gets out throughout the student body, hospital, whatever it is and everyone knows to watch it when around the suspect. Soon parents and teachers, due to a kid voicing their concerns to a trusted adult know about the suspicions surrounding the suspect. There was a teacher who was also a football coach who apparently liked to pay too much attention to the boys in the shower after practices. Word obviously got to the top administration because when we came to class one day (I was in his geography class) he was gone and we were introduced to the new teacher who took the class over for the remainder of the school year. For all practical purposes he disappeared and we were given no explanation beyond "Mr. PervyFreak is no longer with the school. Mr. NewTeacher will take over for the rest of this school year." Like I said- everyone knows when someone is suspect in these situations- no one is unaware.

Exactly. I work in a small hospital. Let me tell you, if anyone, a nurse, doctor or any other was doing something like this it would spread like wildfire. They cleverly & carefully select their victims, grooming family members, neighbors, the children of their partner or spouse, or organizations that give them access: school sports, scouts, altar boys & church youth groups, social services, orphanages, private schools, modeling & show business--they usually pick victims that they think no one cares about, people who are poor, &/or from broken homes, troubled kids, people that tend to go under the radar, runaways, homeless, people who won't be believed, poor white kids & poor persons of color, or are unable to accuse their abuser such developmentally delayed individuals. They might use bribery to gain favors, pretend to be the only person who understands the victim, &/or turn the victim's protector into the enemy, convincing them that their parent or guardian views them as a child & that they need to break away from them, or, they will use physical force. When the victims come from close, watchful & protective families, or more financially privileged homes where they can't be bribed with gifts, they must resort to more clever tactics, such as threaten friends, loved ones & pets with harm if they don't cooperate, or set them up so that they can black mail them into complying with their sexual desires--however, these tactics are used regardless of socio-economic class.

This happens a lot more than people can imagine. And it happens everywhere. My child was a victim at the age of eleven by a fifty four year old teacher. Investigation happened and several victims were interviewed. The case was shut down by people who were worried about lawsuits. Dirty officials and others who worried about the school’s reputation because it was private. So easy for several people to turn a cheek so not to rock the boat. Truly sad and completely infuriating. The damage done to these children is enormous and so unfair. I hate these sick criminals. They are a total loss because they will not stop. They are like rabid dogs spreading disease, only difference, society is ok with destroying a rabid dog. It is amazing that people in position of authority can be criminals themselves by knowingly making efforts to hide evidence, tell untruths, and in our case threaten my husband’ life. So if this story seems far fetched to anyone, you need to be aware these crimes and cover ups happen everywhere, every economic environment, sexual predators do not discriminate. This is making me think of all the enablers. The powerful men who - much like Gym Jordan in Ohio - turned a blind eye and simply allowed the abuse to continue. In 2020, Weber was convicted in another trial and sentenced to 5 life sentences. That definitely made up for the 18 year sentence he received in a previous trial. Also on October 12th, 2022, the US government has agreed to pay between $1.5 million to $2 million to each of 8 victims to settle claims that federal officials ignored or tolerated the abuse. In total the government will pay $14.5 million. Hopefully more victims will come forward and get monetary compensation for their suffering. I know that the trauma will still be there but hopefully the money can help stabilize their situation in some way.

When suspicions about the Dr there, the tiny little IHS mysteriously burned to the ground and the predator was moved somewhere else with no follow through. Who knows how many innocent children were molested while the IHS turned a blind eye…BULLSHIT. That IDIOT Bob McSwain is GUILTY because this has not stopped, it continues today. He should be prosecuted as well, there is blood not only on his hands but all over his body. And he has the audacity to act like he had no idea. The beautiful lives that are destroyed buy these predators is way more worthy of REPARATIONS then ANY other race here in America

This touched me so deeply. First because of my memories crossing the Canadian border into Montana in 1970 and seeing the wretched conditions of the Blackfoot Tribe and the blatant signs of discrimination. I still carry that memory. I hope thing are better today. Later I worked 20 yrs in criminal prosecutions and developed compassion for defendants who are themselves victims crying out for help. February 10, 2020, Stanley Patrick Weber, age 71, was sentenced to five consecutive life sentences in federal prison for the five Aggravated Sexual Abuse charges, and 15 years on each of the three counts of Sexual Abuse of a Minor. All of these sentences are to be served consecutively to each other, and also consecutive to his previous sentence in the District of Montana of 18 years in federal prison. Weber was also ordered to pay $800,000 in criminal fines and an $800 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

From what he said there isn’t a lot of incentive for good Doctors to sign up and because of that there’s a shortage of people with any kind of medical profession and when they do get someone it’s usually someone who should be in prison. So because of that they think that they shouldn’t turn down an applicant which is not a good thing but what’s bad is they won’t have a doctor. Even to this day the IHS has a shortage of medical professionals and even funding.

It isn’t right whatsoever but the comment is sadly a reality for some of these things. As crass as it sounds getting a doctor for these reservations is incredibly difficult. You basically need to find somebody who probably has six figures of debt from medical school but is ready to make much less than they’d make somewhere else and is ready to live in a community far away from normal everyday life you’re accustomed to. That doesn’t absolve anything he did or hiring him knowing what he’s done but it’s a reality to understand that these people become so desperate to simply have a doctor they throw away all the reasonable things we look to for anybody else. Getting into medical school in the US today is very difficult. Few schools, and international students that can pay full tuition but not planning on staying. We should encourage medical, dental and nursing students to pay it forward and serve the public, so no student loans.

The problems is people choose to not spend their lives stuck in an area they don’t want to live in after they’ve already out their life on hold for 8-15 years depending on the residency they choose. 4 years of undergrad 4 years of medical school and 3-7 years of residency. Im not even including the 2 years of a fellowship. During that time friends and family are getting married/ dying/ having children. and your life has been on hold for over a decade. The last thing you want to do is be away from your family and support system any longer. That’s the issue.

@@kamigriff It's not the only issue. There are lots of health professionals in IHS facilities that are there to get their loans repaid. They do often leave to be closer to their own families once they have maxed the benefits they can receive (I think it's 3 or 4 years) There's a LONG list of reasons not to stay, however. The primary one is that Native American politics are the most corrupt of any I have ever seen. The reservations are run like mob families or like a dictatorship; Cuba or North Korea, for example. Your goal as a member of a tribe, if you are ambitious, is to have one of the awesome political positions, like tribal chief.. or be related to them. Because they can and will divert money your way. Another great position is to be on a board of directors. The hospitals or colleges are both prime BOD gigs they can get. They are paid to be on those boards and they massage it for all it is worth. They get jobs for friends and family, promote unqualified Native Americans over qualified whites, and when it goes south, they blame it on whites and racism. Unless you have spent years seeing how it works it is impossible to understand how literally throwing millions of dollars at the problem gets zero results. And so the handful of healthcare professionals that do want to make a career in native hospitals are often exhausted from the dysfunction and mismanagement that never, ever changes.

It’s not what you know, but who you know. Every government is corrupt. It’s the same with urban and rural areas. There have been GREAT staff and there has been bad staff but thank goodness there has never been horrible providers like this monster! Perhaps we should do more as a society to acknowledge the inescapable stigmatization that accompanies a male/male victim of sexual abuse. Victims are immediately labeled "ruined"! Automatically assumed to likely commit the same crimes. Shamed for being vulnerable. Even dogma surrounding homosexuality plays a 'huge' part in why male sex abuse victims never come forward. If we can figure out a way to overcomes these issues, perhaps more men would come forward. Then maybe we could begin to figure out how to help the people before they commit such heinous crimes!

When my child was an infant a highly regarded and respected long-time pediatrician of the area was suggested to me by friends and my sons father’s family; He’d been the pediatrician of my child’s dad, his brothers and cousins…… I felt off, he was very…… off-putting and disinterested in my child. A year or two later it was discovered he was targeting 12 year old boys and was charged with a SLEW of crimes such as sexual acts by an authority figure, assault, and other things I won’t type. I remember feeling so disgusted, shocked and lucky my child was still so young so he wasn’t his target age. He’s still in prison to this day…. Multiple victims and he only got 8 years because everyone in the area “loved” him

I was a teacher at an IHS drug treatment program in Klamath Falls, OR, I was fired for reporting sexual abuse of one of the students to DHS, as a mandatory reporter. I never was able to have cooperatIon from Law Enforcement or IHS. I filed a complaint with Bureau of Labor and Industry. The school was eventually closed because of misappropriation of funds, lack of professional certificates for Alcohol and Drug counseling, and child endangerment.
