I revisited Babu's incredible retro game shop and went deeper into his story and his unseen game collection in his childhood home. I also stumbled upon many PS2 games that were made in India!
I found many retro consoles, including Sega Nomad, Dreamcast Karaoke, Super Nintendo, and many more! Plus, a massive collection of games that were made in India during the PlayStation 2 era, including Hanuman: The Boy Warrior, Desi Adda: Games of India, Don 2: The Game, RA.One: The Game, and Cart Kings.
Babu's Video Games (बाबू वीडियो गेम्स) is located in the beautiful and chilled-out city of Pune, India. Pune is a sprawling city in the western state of Maharashtra, known for its rich history, vibrant culture, and beautiful architecture. It is also a hub of education and technology, making it a popular destination for students and professionals.

Babu is so down to earth! He should have mentioned how we helped people in our community! I am one of those children who always hanged out in Babu's place and help him in their store. My parents were not able to afford school for me. Babu was so kind to help me finish my study by paying for some of my school fees in exchange of assisting him. Now, I am an engineer working in Canada! It would have not been possible if not for Babu's help. He helps but never really mention it. He is pure of heart! If you can, visit Babu and meet this amazing person!

What Babu said is really true. When we were young, we had no financial worries or any career worries. I remember i spent so many countless hours in my local gaming parlor playing ps2 games. Wrestling games were really fun playing with strangers and friends alike. Now that we have grown up and found ourselves on different career paths and have responsibilities, sometimes at night i recall my childhood memories and it really makes me sad for a moment. But that's life, you have to move on. But gaming has always been by my side till now. Still a hardcore gamer even in my late years.

It’s weird finding myself saying “I don’t get to play v games much these days” to people, especially younger gen peeps. When you think about it the vast majority of our gen never had that interaction with older people. The stuff didn’t exist for them. Now we are the very first gen, for the rest of time, to have experienced it, and there will be no generation ever after us to experience it. Of course, from the beginning of time a child had less responsibility than adults, which meant more play, BUT, the major addition of this entire medium reaching that of a global culture, is unique to us. It’s good to hear we share together because it’s tough not having many elders who can help us understand our existence.

I live in a small town called Nagpur growing up in the 90s. The companies like Sony and Xbox had not penetrated the market deeply enough to reach small towns like mine. Small gaming shops like babu’s were the ones that made big title games accessible to kids from towns like ours as an adult, now, I feel so thankful that these shops and their owners cater to children and their interests back in those days, making our childhood way, more fun at a very little cost and creating a brigade of gamers that can handover the torch of gaming to the next generationthank you Baabu and many other gamer uncles across India for making gaming possible for the 90s, Indian kids.

I was in the 7th grade in 2002, my dad and I looked for the PS2 in almost all places in Pune and Bombay and it was out of stock. One friend suggest 'babu video games' so my dad and I took my driver and had to look for a long time since this was inside a lane tucked in. I came across the adress but there was no 'babu video game' instead 'puran general stores' which smelled of kerosene and there was an old uncle packing jaggery in a newspaper. There was no way this was the place I was gonna find the PS2 which even the Sony showrooms didn't have. There weren't many cds and game posters etc in your face in the shop at that time. There was a dude with long hair dressed in white shirt white pant in the shop. I went upto him and asked him 'wheres babu video games' he said 'yahi hain' which literally translates to 'its right here'. I looked at him for 30 seconds and asked him, I'm looking for babu video games that sells play station. He told me ' this is babu video games, what are u looking for?' I went to get my dad and told my dad that this was babu video games. My dad looked at me and the store for a min. In the end I ended up buying a PS2 for 13k INR and he gave me smack down here comes the pain and a controller free. Also while babu was explaining how to connect the PS and the functions a woman in her maxy came from the nearby slum and yelled 'babu do ande de' which means 'babu give me two eggs', I looked at my dad and he was shocked too. 🤣🤣🤣 Second story is my friends from school in 10th took home a PS2 from babu using another friends name who was a regular as guarantee. They took 6 controllers and a few games for the weekend. They never bothered to return it for more than a week. One morning after the school assembly we see babu dressed in white shirt white pant in our school, he was later in the principals office for a while. It was really hilarious. 🤣🤣🤣

I love tech, games and the old school. Thank you so much for this. I'm currently visiting my parents India and was looking forward to seeing my nearly 40 year old MSX PC and 20 year Sony camera and found out it was all thrown out. I would LOVE to have something like this in my neighborhood. Hard to find nowadays almost anywhere and kinda grew up with the store era of shopping for PC's and games. So can't thank you enough 🙏

Great video! Love his collection and enthusiasm. BTW @9:15, that battery was for a rumble feature, not saving. :) Most Game Boy cartridges with a save feature used smaller soldered in batteries within the cartridge instead. Pokemon Pinball was the one that I remember most fondly using the rumble feature.

Very interesting video Karl! Babu is awesome! But i have one question, is there any particular reason why most of the games and consoles are so dirty? Im a retro game collector myself, from Denmark. But its very rare to see games in such poor condition where i am from, so that made me wonder. If anyone could answer, it would be much appreciated :)

Men sometimes there are so much work that you can’t afford to get time and as you can see babu is like one man doing most of the things in his shop or you can say in his workspace i think he didn’t like to get some workers to help him out and he has a big Library to pile so yeah sometimes it’s hard

Many reasons but primarily India is a hot and humid country with seasonal rains so there is a lot of surface dust compared to temperate Europe. Things will literally get covered in dust in a couple of days if you don't clean regularly. Houses are also built to be airy with wide open windows unlike double glazed windows in Europe so dust can easily accumulate inside homes. Also, I think his main business is to repair and sell new consoles so he probably can't give as much attention. It will be really cool if some of these consoles can be repaired and put in a retro museum on some tourist trail in Mumbai.

Hey Allan, it wasn’t about collecting for him, but giving locals access to the games. So everything is well worn from renting and people enjoying. He’s just small operation, so probably never had time to collate everything properly.

I used to refurbish games and consoles for a living for a while. Sometimes I got stuff that was absolutely disgusting (and made it like new again). But almost everything he showed was at that level or worse. I don't even understand how it got that bad unless he's digging up landfills. And I can only imagine the countless of issues those devices are going to have because of decades of neglect.
