Speaking as a PM and dev, most people don't understand enough about the nitty gritty of MMO optimization. Unreal Engine is great for asset and multi-team collaboration; it's great to ensure the whole org gets patched assets pushed out without having to manually fetch and reload it. But again, all of this assumes the technical directors and managers know what they're doing. However, everything we've seen from AN indicates they aren't really receptive to new technologies AND work processes. Take a look at FrostGiant games. Even with famous devs and managers from the Blizzard side of things, the "starcraft 2 killer" is crap.

i think an aspect that's not usually talked about that's made GW2 so special is that its PvE experience is designed a lot like a PvP experience, with things like the boon and condition system making it so that if you are knowledgeable about the games workings you have an advantage, and the fact that there is a semi-rigid powerlevel cap so endgame winds up being more about HOW you play and set up your build rather than the trap that a lot of MMORPGs have where your performance is by and large just dictated by your powerlevel (from gear or from levels) and already knowing how hyperspecific PvE mechanics function because you have read a guide.

Realistically Guild Wars 3 has to be at some point of development by now. The content slowdown post End of Dragons unfortunately just reeks of a studio scrambling because the reality is the main story of Guild Wars 2 is complete. The Elder Dragons were the the entire premise of the story and that is now finished with the original 6 now dead and Aurene is asleep potentially until Guild Wars 3. The introduction of the Kryptis and the return of the Titans feels more like filler while we wait for the next game to be completed, instead of a replacement as primary antagonists which is something the game is now sorely missing as without it the narrative just feels hollow and without purpose.
@JingLan69Күн бұрын
That might also just be because of the nature of episodic content. The game will never again have the time and budget it had before launch, where they could set up a whole world intertwined to serve the overarching story. It is always just smaller chunks, and those tend to be self-contained (even if some events might resuse old maps).

I don't know if you have played World of Warcraft, but their model makes it so that you don't ever need a new game because they keep keep rebooting every 2 years. guild wars 2 players probably would not appreciate that. However, they've pretty much sold us every piece of fashion they can at this point. Once I saw they gave us bikinis I knew it was pretty much over. There's an end game to rven fashion and they could just resell us all of the old fashion if they go to a guild war. 3.

I have 2000 hours in GW2. I have played many, many MMOs, from AOL days to present. I WANT ARENANET TO MAKE A NEW MMORPG. I'd be fine with either GW3 or a new IP. If you don't take risks, you will miss out on so much. Think about how innovative GW2 was on launch. Would you want to miss out on something transformative like that, rather than just iterating on the same old dated engine forever? I'm sure people are scared because newer MMOs seem to monetized in predatory ways, to the point of ruining the game design. That might happen. But we won't know until they make it, and I will give them the benefit of the doubt.
@Nodiee1Күн бұрын
I like this attitude on MMOs. I get that a lot of people get really invested in their MMO characters--I'm sure some people still play some that they created around launch, but at a point you have to realize that a game can and should end so that something new and exciting can come out in its place. So many people are constantly champing at the bit for good, new MMOs, but are completely unwilling to have the devs of already popular MMOs replace their old MMO with a new one, even though they would be the ones with the most MMO dev experience, and so would probably have the skills to build better MMOs. You can generally only patch improvements onto an old game so much, and the more content you pile into a game the more off-putting it can become to be players. If you really want exciting new innovations you have to accept that the old has to go out at some point so the new can come in.

I've got a whole playbook I've been keeping notes in for YEARS, just waiting for my chance to place myself at the helm as a game director with underlings that believe in my vision and game-playing experience. If it never happens, I'm going to invest in my own game studio to fulfill these visions. Most of the people anxious over Ashes of Creation (I am not one of them btw) are salivating over that game because Steven played L2, and said he wanted to bring a Lineage 2-like experience to the new era of MMO's. Making a new game should be easier I suppose. Some problems such as combat basically designed around having 100% boon uptime have run so deep that it's just better to scrap all and make a new system. Moreover, the story also feels like it has no more space to expand further.
@AttilaHendrichКүн бұрын
"they can just update gw2" Yes, in theory they could. The weakest part of GW2 is its engine, which while theoretically could be ported to DX12/Vulcan or the whole game could be ported to another engine eg. Unreal, it would be an enormous endeavor, and the size of GW2 would mean that they would had to test it extremly throughly that they did not mess anything up, collision works 100% the same, mount accelerations work 100% the same, movement skill, particle effects etc etc etc. Now add several systems level issues (useless hero and mastery points for vets, lack of space for new stat combos and specs, mounts braking core exploration etc.) and how we sort of ran out of story with EoD, and it just making a new game also make sense.
@Riaining7Күн бұрын
It's basically impractical and extremely time-consuming to fix old code. It's always better to start new, because most of the time, as years trudge forward, the talent that made the thing to begin with moves on, and the experts that know why it was made, are no longer available for consultation. For people who have never worked in programming, it's a lot like editing someone elses writing. You often times end up completely re-writing the thing entirely, regardless how well the first thing was made. A good writer is nothing else but a good editor, but that doesn't translate into programming. It's always more efficient to start new, and learn from the limitations of the past.

Unreal does offer some default implementations for indie studios but that is about it. "Chat system for UE5 is nonexistent". Do you even realize how MMORPG chat systems work? You end up creating a separate backend for chat servers which client establishes a websocket communication to. It doesn't matter what game engine you are using for this. I don't think GW3 will be a single-player game, but I think it will be built as a solo-first experience, similar to "MMO-lites" like Diablo IV. If you enter any dungeon solo then you get a solo dungeon. If you then invite your wife then the dungeon scales up to 2 players, but at no point will you ever need to "fill up the party" and use a dungeon finder because the instance will adapt to your party size. IIRC personal story instances already work like that in GW2, but I think GW3 will apply that to the whole game, from the story instance to the end-game raids.

GW2 is an amazing decade old game.... but IS an decade old game. and when i guess a gw3 could drop, it will probably be a 15 years old game at least. so much stuff have happened since the release that arena net could take notes and improve, and would be imposible to implement right in gw2. Lumen, naninte, Breath of the wild, hero shooters, animal crossing craze, fortnite, an explosion of games with fun crafting, some interesting animation pipelines... tons of character creators. a ton of stuff it could take notes from. gw2 character creation is actually pretty solid, specially for such an old game. but imagine if you could also use stuff as props attached to bones, like soul calibur games, decals, stickers and different materials for clothes.. customize your voice lines, or customize your out of combat animations... imagine if when you choose if your character is harsh, or dignified, or charismatic personality, it could also get reflected in its out of combat animations.

We don't need vast spaces filled by procedural generation or an "AI"... A smaller world that is very tightly crafted with purpose is worth a lot more. Otherwise your takes are mostly solid imho.

but this moron has a problem with maps having portals ( oh no! ) hes impressed by inconsequential tech, procedural generation would likely make the game worse, just hire more map designers what are we paying you for!?
@TriptychGamingКүн бұрын
I don’t necessarily disagree. I’m interested in how this tech could be used, but the main reason I talked about it in this video is because it’s very likely to play a role based off of the information from the Senior Engineer Programmer. Thanks for giving the video a watch!

Traditional quests are just... bad, usually. More chores than quests, and they have zero consequence on the game world after they're completed. Procedural, randomized tasks that have tangible effects (potion prices going down after collecting alchemical ingredients for instance) are fine, and I do agree that a system should exist in GW3 to deliver story sidequests without awkwardly bodging them into an achievement framework like GW2 does, but no new game should lean on truly traditional questing. The usual situation of having to do utterly meaningless "10 bear pelts" quests for thirty years before you can meaningfully interact with headline features that only open up when you achieve endgame stats, is IMO is one of the things that has kept MMOs as kind of a sideshow in the wider gaming scene.
@TriptychGaming6 сағат бұрын
What you describe here is more what I had in mind. I would basically like to see an expanded side story system that doesn’t have to rely on recording VO. To me that is ArenaNets best take on traditional questing and I enjoy them more than hearts personally. I did a poor job explaining that in this video.

It would be awesome to have a continuous open world without loading screens. And randomly generated fractals of the mists would be awesome for the exploration and replayability. I hope GW3 would have proper healers. No boon ball. E-Sport is dead, but sPvP is the worst game mode of GW2. GvGvG is what we need, but it need better balance instead of being all boon ball.

Probably a single player focus with potential for grouping. It will likely be pvp lite. The pve is what sells in gw2, the pvp is bloat that they gave up on for the most part. I think it would make more sense as a prequel.

Traditional questing kinda never left GW, they just made it worse by hiding it in the hearts system. Completing hearts around the game requires you to do one of a few things. Usually these things are: kill enemies, gather objects, interact with objects, etc. All of which are common quest objectives in your normal mmos. If GW was to return to a normal questing system then I would want it to be like GW1s, where there is no such thing as a 'kill 10 enemies' or 'gather 10 things' style of questing. Instead gw1 quests were interactive and had you actually doing things and helping people in the world. They were what events and meta events in gw2 are.
@OryyytКүн бұрын
Janthir Wilds is actually updated the heart system. Same principle of just filling out the heart but there's more variety in tasks like participating in events and actual quests in a much wider radius.
@chuiuКүн бұрын
@Oryyyt participating in events to fill hearts is something that's been in there a while, maybe even since the start. But I haven't played since the last expansion so I don't know much about the newer content
@OryyytКүн бұрын
@@chuiu Yeah but area radius where you could fill out the hearts in are smaller and more contained. In Janthir it's like there's 1 heart the covers every 3rd of a map. And there are actual quests now you interact with individually.

im really not excited about the switch to ue5, most of the announced ue5 projects and some that are out there look very same-ish and run like absolute crap compared to actually optimized engines like idtech, also gw2 has some great technologies that might be hard to port over like the fact that it hasn't been down for maintenance in years, that its still playable with relatively high pings etc, i understand that the job market skews heavily in favor of ue development but i really dislike that trend, we'll just have to see if new projects from all these companies that ditched their own engines pan out

All these AAA studios switching to UE5 is worrying. They want to treat employees like cogs that they can replace.
@mikim.63388 сағат бұрын
Console support can actually by a bad thing. You will end up with ESO-like MMORPG. And ESO is ok, but I don't want Guild Wars to became a clone of other MMO. Most important (and reasonable) arguments for switching to Unreal Engine are related to people and engine itself. First - it's easier to find good, skilled employees for Unreal Engine than for some custom engine. Also those people will be able to join project and start bringing value into it a lot easier than when working with custom engine. It's also easier to get help with some issues (because other studios use this engine too and there is a chance that someone else already found a solution to this). Second - GW2 engine is terribly old and outdated. ArenaNET wouldn't be able to easly update their engine for modern hardware and technologies. So they had two options - build new engine from scratch or use commonly available one. And building their own engine would take so much time that it's pointless for them to do that. Studio is so small that their engine would be always years behind new (not newest) technologies.
@PixelbendrКүн бұрын
I would suggest watching ThreatInteractive's breakdown on why UE5 is not good, seeing as how terribly optimized GW2 is, we can also safely assume Anet would put no effort into optimizing this new project with how badly UE5 hogs resources out of the gate.

It was a fun experiment, but GW2 proved to me that real class roles just work better - tanks, healers, crowd control, etc. They seemed to realize it along the way and tried to make more healing specs on classes, for example. WvW was a good idea, but the static instanced nature of the battlegrounds made it a fairly pointless loop. That kind of system just works better when it's actually part of the world and there's real territorial benefits to taking objectives.

So here's what I'll say with my VERY limited knowledge about UE5. From what I understand the traditional mmorpg framework has to be custom built for UE5. There isn't really an out of the box blueprint for something like WoW. However, UE5 seems to handle "lobby based" multiplayer very well and has a framework for that integration, so things like The First Descendant (korean Destiny) would be a simpler task. So, if there's a shift to UE5 I would expect something closer to lobby based stuff unless they have a custom solution in mind for mmo scaling.

If we are like genshin player/wow/ff whos frequently give money to anet, its ok for them to focus only to gw2, gw2 not big enough and not good generate money from player, their market only on western unlike wow or ff whos have both bc they are famous IP and bc gw2 system not eastern enough. Honestly i don´t like pvp and the thing i love in GW2 is the point to be able to play single, with others, and single amongst others (you know what i mean). Have big world events with many players and no need to form enervating raidgroups or something like this. It is perfect as it is. If they implement more pvp-possibilities i´m ok with that, as long as that doesn´t mean that the rest will be sacrificed for it. Than GW3 would be a great "nono" for me. and i know that i´m not alone with this.

I just wish Arenanet would realize that maybe if every time they try to shift attention to a new project other than gw2, it’s turned out to fail, and that GW2 has consistently proven itself to be an asset keeping the company alive. Replacing it just seems like 1. A waste of resources 2. A disappointment to the people who have gotten so invested in gw2 who would have to essentially ditch all their progress if GW2 is getting replaced

True but they also need to pull in new people. Gw2 has some things that keeps people from playing like the old graphics, awful ui and lots of technical constraints that make the game feel outdated.
