As a Scotsman living on the Greek island of Rhodes, I can say that Greece is an incredible country with a truly fantastic history. Ancient Greece was full of incredible inventions, innovations and was light years ahead of practically everyone else. Now, when I walk down to the shore of the Aegean Sea near my house, I love to think about all the incredible times that have passed. No wonder Greece is the cradle of western civilisation.

Great you liked it man! Welcome to Greece! Since you are Scandinavian and interested in greek history you might be familiar with the Varangian Guard. The symbol of Piraeus, a marble lion now in Venice, was inscribed with Scandinavian runic inscriptions by these medieval Scandinavian mercenaries. One can still see the lion and inscription in the entrance of the venetian arsenal. That’s why Olympiakos fans call themselves “Porto Leone”...

Magnificent video, thank you a lot for making us, who'll probably never be on board, experience this! On a side note, the Romans also generally didn't use slaves to row their galleys, but trained free people. There are exceptions in times of urgency, but the Romans would often free the slaves before putting them on an oar, since it was difficult to have a functional warship with unmotivated slaves. Most historians believe that the cadence of rowing wasn't given with drums like in the movies but with flutes, if I recall right. Only in the late medieval and Renaissance period did the practice of using condemned people on galleys become common. This was facilitated by using less numerous but much bigger oars, on which several people where rowing, this made the errors of a single rower less significant for the entire ship.
@GiorgosNSR Жыл бұрын
What is mostly significant about those ships is mentioned in 18.35 and many people are not aware of it. The Athenian triremes and the rise of the Athenians to a great naval power was the kindle of the birth of Democracy worldwide. It was indeed the recognition of the significance of the vast numbers of rowers and other sailors that kept the navy operational that led to equal rights be given to them and hence the birth of democracy in its early stages ofcourse. That surely adds many points to how cool those ships were, and what the world owes to them and the Athenians of that time.

@@SpartanLeonidas1821 Oh so you’re Greek? Why does the power that be over there hate Greek history? I mean how could anyone? It’s a golden age of human culture and technology. And in my opinion society, cultures, technology went into a decline until the the renaissance and even then there is nothing quite like it. Even during the Bronze Age Greece had the Minoans and the Mycenaeans which to be honest the Mycenaeans are almost more of a favorite of mine. The only reason that time period doesn’t take the cake for me is because we don’t know much about it.
