Very interesting. My dad was a N.Y. State Police Investigator at the time of the riot. After the prison was taken back they sent them to Attica hours after. Still have alot of the original photos.

I met a guy that was there and he's only 77 now. Rolling around ac in a wheelchair looking for jackpots. Bought me dinner a few nights. He was THE man. So nice a guy. Told me all about the riot.

One thing I noticed you won't see in any prison these days from everything I have seen in docs and movies (for what that's worth). White & Black guys eating together in the mess hall in a major State prison.

I did 14 years in the Maryland State Prison system, and for the most part, Whites, Blacks, and Browns got along reasonably well, except for the occasional little blowups that are bound to happen in ANY real Penitentiary.

Riot started on September 9, 1971, and ended on September 13. Of the 43 men who died (33 inmates and 10 correctional officers and employees), all but one guard and three inmates were killed by law enforcement gunfire when the state retook control of the prison on the final day of the uprising.
