Join us on this short trip north of Tucson, AZ for an inside look at the reopened Biosphere 2 in 2021!
About an hour trip from our home in Tucson, AZ lies the world's largest earth science experiment: Biosphere II in Oracle, AZ. Operated by the University of Arizona (go wildcats!), the facilities are now re-opened for a self-guided tour of the various environments, including: coastal fog desert, the orchard, savannah wetlands, mangrove forest, the world's largest experimental ocean, and a rainforest.
The experiment dates back to the 1990s when a group of scientists were tasked with living inside the sealed biosphere for two years to see if we could sustain life on mars. While the experiment ultimately fell victim to unforeseen circumstances (curing concrete eventually consumed much of the oxygen within, causing the experiment to "fail" due to needing to pump in oxygen from the outside world), the facilities remain open as a crucial hub for earth science research today.
An experience we won't, a huge thank you to the University of Arizona for having us out! Definitely worth checking out, so if you're in the area or passing by, get your tickets today here: biosphere2.org/
Be sure to like and subscribe to follow along our upcoming exciting adventures! See you in the next one!

I've lived here for almost 20 years and have never been here. Maybe I should put it on my bucket list. Well done.

We thought the same thing! Definitely worth the trip, though may be best to go when they get back to normal operations as there is currently a fair amount closed off (living quarters, tunnels/ocean viewing windows, lungs etc)

I learned about this on my own when traveling to Arizona on vacation. Wife and I went today and even though we are not scientists or ecologists or anything else like that, it was a cool visit and learned a lot. There is now a documentary on Hulu called Spaceship Earth about this biosphere 2. These people are like hippie genius’s who built this.

I heard about this place. So cool that you could go! Also, 1 cup of coffee every two weeks? Wouldn't be lack of oxygen that killed me!

We've lived here for so long now only an hour away and it took us this long to go haha. Awesome experience, we'll definitely have to go back when they open fully since there's a lot of parts of it that we weren't able to see. And seriously, I'm sure growing your own coffee is great, but 1 cup every 2 weeks wouldn't cut it lol

Im curious, by most, the initial biosphere experiment is regarded as a failure. I actually think that despite its issues, it was an effective proof of concept and yielded valuable science. What are your thoughts? Do you think we should make a Biosphere 3?

Excellent question! It seems the initial experiments had a lot of oversight: the first experiment was rushed and the still curing concrete sucked oxygen out of the air, which lead to a premature "failure" of the system when they had to pump in oxygen after a year and a half. Let alone, nearly all of the small animal species (19 of 25) became extinct and all plant pollinator insects died as well. I'd like to think that with knowing what we know now, and modern/advanced technology, we could produce a much more successful experiment. It's interesting/surprising that SpaceX/Elon Musk have yet to conduct such experiments, given they claim to want to conduct a manned flight to Mars in the near future.

They plan to use inflatable habs, so concrete is no issue. Solar radiation will be the issue.

honestly humans have the opportunity to save the true biosphere we inhabit yet we are so focused on the colonization of space…

To save earth humans need to leave earth, or die. Bio sphere 1 can't survive 8 billion humans.
