In 1991 the top 14 BMW mechanics were awarded a trip to Germany as the winners,i believe this is the car we saw running on the test track outside of Munich,we were told it was a 12 cylinder developmental engine,it sounded amazing at full song,i shall never forget it,what a trip!

The old generation of BMW engineers and management were people who were not interested in money, but in technology and engineering. Less budget, more creativity, milestones had to be created. It was about revolutionizing the motorsport world. Clear thoughts had to be made about the love of the car. It's different today. Today's generation focuses on maximizing profits.

Being an owner of E31 and an old fan of this model I must admit, only now I've realised M8 prototype has no pop-up headlights! :-O

That's because it needed the space of heavy pop-up lights for air-filters & electronic valves & pipes.. this prototype ditched many other heavy comfort things in it's way for ultimate lighting performance they replaced glass with lexan plastic, dash has way less things, they installed only 2 racing carbon seats and i read somewhere that entire body panels are made from carbon-kevlar not aluminum or steel.. they did try to do carbon-kevlar rims but eventually they just wrapped the inner spokes in carbon.. that engine is an epic masterpiece..

Economic downturn the 90s and E31 sales were lagging, so BMW figured it wasn't going to succeed financially. McLaren F1 S70/2 isn't related to this engine, but is based on the S50 (in turn, the M50) whereas the S70/1 was based on the M20.

I loved my E31's restored both of them to better than showroom condition with latest available OE parts and mods you cant see like Schrick cams and Dinan ECU, and custom valved Bilsteins adjustable sway bar links. They were almost fun.

I was lucky enough to experience this car in Monterey California when it came for the Legends of the Autobahn show several years ago. I owned an 850 at the time and it was very cool to be able to check this one out in person. I can confirm it ran and drove at that time (i even posted a video of it)

Nice and very legendary car. The final alternative was then built by Alpina (B12 5.7 Coupé). Also equiped with a V12 but less output of power. Until today the B12 5.7 Coupé is a true dreamcar for us.

A true classic that will never die. Compared to great-grandpa, the great grandson ( latest M8) looks like he tried to imitate Bernini and Michelangelo after too much coke (not Cola). I can definitely see one of my fictional characters driving this or the 850 CSI. This definitely needs to be in its own movie.

2:09 Modern bmw engines (from n52 above) do not need a throttle body to accelerate, they only used vanos and valvetronic, the throttle body is only for emergency cases

Magnificent, truly incredible. But the 850csi, is an M by all means. The VIN is WBS and not WBA, so this make it an M, as it was built by Motorsport back then...And the engine plaque is there to prove it. Great channel, huge potentials Guys! Well done!
