It is true. Watch out in particular for various "Christian" style orphanages that get funding from various religious groups and have fake "pastors" running the homes who exploit the children. Many do have relatives but they are very poor and often get cheated into giving their kids to the orphanage by being told they will get food and an education.

I thought people knew these kids had families….this isn’t new. The fact these elite people didn’t realize that is beyond me. I’m glad that one woman is talking about this and trying to inform the public. What they need to be doing is helping the parents of these children have better opportunities.

It's also not unique to Cambodia. Thousands of Irish kids grew up in "industrial schools" even though they had one or both parents living. Sometimes the parents brought them there voluntarily because they couldn't provide for them and sometimes authorities took the children away from parents deemed to be immoral or unfit. There was a whole industry around profitably adopting these kids out (often to the US). Australia also had its share of orphanages and industrial schools where children were dumped (one nicknamed the "Sunbury Slaughterhouse" because 10% of the children died. Then there's the history of the US and Canada taking native/first nations children from their families and forcing them into residential boarding schools where they were often traumatized and abused. I agree with you that the best way to help is to enable families to stay together by making it possible for parents to support and raise their children.

In the U.S., parents who found themselves trying to raise a child or two too many could "sell" unwanted children to the state. It was like a bounty system, associated with the "eugenics" movement. The parents would contact the authorities, and, based upon the most arbitrary of reasons ("my child won't do his chores", etc.) the child would be taken to a mental health facility where they would be warehoused, usually for the remainder of their natural lives. And the parents would receive compensation from the state for each child that was "sold" in this manner- a bounty. To this day, you can still find victims of this cruel practice in most mental health facilities across the country, sitting in tray chairs, abandoned by society, heavily medicated, waiting to die.

This is so heartbreaking 😢poor children it doesn’t stop with the the children the monkeys in Cambodia are abused there’s monkey moms crying for their babies that’s been kidnapped from poachers there are monkeys walking around with one arm or hands one foot from traps I watched a video where this man kicked a monkey so hard it was crying so loud the tourists come to donate money to feed the monkeys but instead they have new motorcycles new wristwatches new camera equipment, they are all Gods creatures, from the children to animals God so loved his creations they abuse for greed for money. Prayers for all children and animals this is so sad .

Would they be better with parents who can barely feed themselves though, I don't see the answer for that.

Then don't have kids that you can't feed. Be responsible.

@@ronnelacido1711 1) A lot of people don't have access contraception. It's a luxury in many places. 2) Sometimes contraception fails. 3) You don't know if she consented to anything. One should be aware and mindful before casting judgement on someone else.

Yeah, they didn't really get into how to address the pressures that caused the families to surrender their children in the first place. To keep families together, they need a viable way to support and raise their kids.

There are organizations that support the child in place with their bio family. You can also support programs which provide the family with resources for self-sufficiency, like buying livestock or tools. Also, advocate for adoptions only from Hague countries to increase the likelihood that children will be legitimate orphans rather than trafficked or stolen.

It is best for biological parents to keep their own children. Let’s get money to help feed and educate children with the ones who already love them.

"orphanage tourism" what an horror,,, take advantage of kids and use them like that it's horrible, honnestly i'm more than happy to be born in france and not in a "under developped country" there's some injustice in this world right from the birth a,d the place of your birth,,

Some people do it in first world countries... Have a shit ton of kids for an easy pay check from the government or overly empathic people in society.

Where is this easy paycheck?

I don't fully agree with this documentary. This is not the solution to the problem, neither is having orphanages and stopping the foreign donations to civilians in need in Cambodia. Instead of orphanages they can build centres for poor kids to go and learn, eat but in the end of the day they have to return to their homes. Did you guys notice how happy and protective that kid was to her teddy bear that she left it back home because she felt it was one of the most valuable things she possessed. So in my opinion keep supporting and donation to poor families in Cambodia. Be the reason to bring a little bit of smile in their lives.
