Formula E cars are a very good idea for traditional car manufacturers to help develop electrical technology to chase after Tesla, who are absolutely years ahead. While traditional automakers had been standing still and laughing at Tesla's efforts, they had been concentrating on changing the transport world rather than racing around a track. They have the acknowledged best batteries and drivetrains, and are going to announce yet another major step forward in the technology in a few months. Perhaps BBC Click might cover that as well as hi-tech sport?

Tesla really aren't that far ahead. Other electric cars get similar ranges and often have far better interiors. Tesla's self-driving technology may well be the best available commercially, but it has lead to several deaths and isn't allowed or recommended in most places. The Tesla S is faster to 60 mph because it's all wheel drive and not weight-limited to fit into a 'Formula' for racing. Two pit shops during a gran prix style race never failed to entertain fans. Use slick tires, not road threads. Actual aerodynmics that balance downforce and drag. Not just look cool while being sortof an open wheeler. Get battery companies to compete but set rules such that the battery maker in the lead doesn't destroy the competition by default. There is so much money ready for Formula E now, fancier car can be easily supported. The privateers have been bought out by car makers. No need for FE to be slower than F3. It should lap like LPM1 and F2. And it's just a matter of choice, not tech or even costs. FE could be way faster overnight by fitting wider slick tires. The LMP1 one might be a good fit.

The future of motorsports particularly the technologically stifled F-1 will be dependent on semi-autonomous remotely driven cars of specialized tracks and stadium. The cars will perform at g's either beyond normal human capabilities or at the edge while reaching speeds and negotiating corners beyond reasonable safety standards for human piloted vehicles. Variants would involve subsonic track contact and non track contact vehicles as well as tracks with loops, hills and corners beyond that seen in normal F-1 or NASCAR tracks. Also, the drivers of the remotely driven cars might have to input commands while confined to an artificial g and elevation chamber [a virtual driving cab attached to an arm and an elevating central piston allowing for spin and variation in height] this negates direction {without an elaborate setup} but allows for calibration of g and redout effects.

"reminiscent of power-ups in a video game," yeah, that's the problem. This is supposed to be racing, not a video game. "Attack mode" is just a video game gimmick, not something that belongs in racing. It's just to satisfy people who cannot distinguish a real honestly earned pass through skill and ability, from a gimmicky "pass" not by skill and ability but because of a video game power up gimmick. That is, for people who can't tell the difference between an earned pass and a gimmick pass, don't care, and just want to see "passing action" regardless of it being actually earned by actual skill or because someone used an unearned "power-up". This is one of my biggest beefs with Formula E. The other being, I want to see this on real actual race tracks we know and love.

Personally I do not like the single-speed gearbox configuration. With a 4 or 5 speed gearbox you can control how fast the car slows down, as opposed to slowing down too fast then applying power to make up the extra distance. Overall this will be a net power loss. Regenerative breaking is not universally beneficial as automakers would have you believe. Besides its much better to routinely exercise both legs instead of just one.

A concerted cyber attack on the banking, power generation, transport, water supply and communications systems would devastate the US within days. Actually a lot. For example, this is directly feeding into battery technology development. A lot has been learned from this that is feeding directly into upcoming passenger EV car technology. There is no better stress test on battery technology than this. There is also an upcoming off road Extreme E race series that will stress battery technology even more. And there are power-train technologies at play also. Power-train power and efficiency is also a crucial area of technology development benefiting directly from this race series. There is a lot of manufacturer and start up participation in this series specifically for the passenger car EV technology development interests. In fact, arguably, as far as the classical manufacturer participation in racing in order to develop technology to feed passenger cars, this is perhaps one of the series that most hearkens back to that principle of most any series today. As you suggest, many passenger cars have more advanced tech than many race cars today - except for EVs and E-racing where the classic trickle down involvement still actually exists as EV technology is still in its infancy.

I have tried watching Formula e and its pretty dull, that could be to do with the makeshift circuits or the fact that they don't have the best drivers or even the lack of engine noise (which could take some fixing). I have no doubt that F1 will have to change but hopefully it will be something nearer to what we have now with different cars and constant innovation as seasons progress.

@@ahumeniy From Statista.com: "Tesla vehicles sales worldwide Due to its incredible market value, people have already begun dubbing Tesla, GM and Ford the "New Big Three". As of 2018, the American automotive company Tesla was amongst the top 10 most valuable car brands worldwide, valued at 9.4 billion U.S. dollars. The reason why the automaker made it into the ranking was in large part due to its top selling Model 3. The number of Tesla vehicles delivered worldwide has soared since the release of the Model 3 in Q3 2017. In its 2018 fiscal year, Tesla generated 17.6 billion U.S. dollars in revenue from car sales, while the remaining 17.8 percent of revenue came from services, leasing and others. Thanks to the widespread popularity of Tesla's vehicles, the company's overall revenue that year reached an all-time high; revenue doubled compared with 2017. Despite the automaker’s consolidated revenue, Tesla Inc.'s net loss in 2018 came to around 388 million U.S. dollars. This can be seen as a sign of the company's increased investments into innovative new models and production ramp-up."

Massa did not SWITCH from F1 to Fromula E... He retired from F1... he would no longer get a drive there....Formula E cars sound like a dentists drill!!.......... if they really want to make an impact they need to lure Lewis Hamiltion and Seb. Vettle to run for a season....

@@jamesbird6103 agree its starting from scratch but I cant get over the sound....the racings good....but as a life long motor racing fan part of the thrill( espcially if you go to live racing) is the sound... go stand at a corner during the Le Mans race when a petrol burning car goes flying by the sound is amazing and so loud your whole body vibrates... then Audi brought Deisels... no sound ...won the race but not as exciting to watch..............the future is electric but its also whiney high pitched motor sounds ...

They don't want to be embarrassed. Modern F1 cars almost drive themselves. Hamilton himself said recently the new drivers have it too easy. FE cars don't have the driver aids they enjoy on F1 and the street circuits give no room for mistakes. Maybe an old-school F1 legend like Senna might be competitive in FE the first race, but everyone else who tried the transition from F1 to FE quickly discovered it wasn't that easy

On the contrary, they limited the overall power of the car and unlock some of its full potential for 8 minutes... Still "Awesooooome"?

What a stupid idea. Why would you attack a city. Attacking a wealthy company would have been much smarter.

She says: "The power train is what converts the electricity from the battery into power to drive the wheels..." - probably the most vacuous and unnecessary comment ever uttered by a tech journalist. On the other hand, there may be some out there who think that this car is powered by steaming, fetid clumps of horse manure, in which case - thanks for the clarity.

You do realise that this is for a general audience? Many probably didn't even understand that.

Tesla luxury cars are faster than most cars on the planet, and their new roadster goes zero to 60 a second faster than these e-racing cars.
