Inside Gosha Rubchinskiy’s Post-Soviet Generation

In this episode of Global Street Style, i-D heads to Russia for exclusive backstage access to Gosha Rubchinskiy’s spring/summer 18 show in St. Petersburg, and to meet the prolific post-1991 generation carving out their own future.
This is the first generation of Russian youth to have grown up after the fall of the Soviet Union, and are looking inwards to the Eastern Bloc for inspiration, rather than the wider Western world. With designers like Gosha Rubchinskiy popularising post-Soviet style around the world, we discover what effect the former Soviet Union has had on modern creativity, the impact of this cultural explosion on the rest of the world, and what it is to be young in Russia today.

I feel like this documentary, brilliant as it is, creates a false impression with non-Russians. I mean, Rubchinskiy is heard of, he is famous or notorious depending on the way you look at him, but his culture is merely a small part of Russian youth. I personally don't know anyone who wears these clothes or similar ones, people around me and in cities I have visited mostly wear H&M, Zara and other mass-produced stuff. There are two reasons for that, the first is that not all Russian youngsters are nostalgic about the '90s (I, for instance, was born in 1994 and don't remember much of the '90s), and the second one is... well... Rubchinskiy's clothes are expensive to say the least. I personally wouldn't pay, like, 250 bucks for a pair of jeans that looks like my mom could wear them when she was my age. If I ever feel like looking like a blast from the past I could simply rummage through my mom's old clothes, not buy ones with a designer label on them. Just my opinion.

Hmm... As someone who actively witnessed the energy of '90s raves being a teenager back then and looking at this "post-soviet rave youth" (while also travelled extensively through eastern block countries nowdays), I can't escape from the feeling of Gosha faking it to the maximum. He uses some of his suburban youth fetishes to create actually a very good hommage, but for me it's just an hommage with a contemporary twist to that past time. There is no real underground anymore, and be it Russia or Ukraine, the world is too connected today to have a real and honest rebelling youth, which I think is necessary for the underground. What are this guys fighting for, or against? Just look at them dancing. Cute, but no authenticity in them. From my point of view this is just a typical remake/recycle/revive loop that we mostly can't escape from in contemporary art or design. I'm not saying that there's no more "rave" youth anymore, I just don't feel any authenticity or energy in any of them that was really present in the nineties. This is just an external simulation of the old form, but unfortunately with no real inner substance anymore. I'm not being nostagic for the old days though, I'm being nostalgic for the substantiality and the true cultural avant-garde that subcultures brought with them.

Totally hit the nail on the head. I agree, the problem with connectivity is that there cannot be an underground because an underground needs a kind of exclusivity and , to be frank, it required you to make an effort - to go to rave, tune into a pirate radio station that broadcasted only at the weekends, get a train to the big city and find that small shop in a market selling clothes, to find the record shop that had the music that you couldn't hear anywhere else and be confronted with a hungover DJ behind the counter who would ignore you.. Now you can access culture from anywhere form your armchair. Great in one way, but culture is just doomed to be ' stylish' and safe and referrencial. Thank god i was alive in the 90's to experience it, and Im also glad i can access its ghosts from the comfort of my computer on Monday night after work in 2018.

There are event planners who try to organise underground sort of secretive raves like there was one out in some field and you had to be accepted to go and get a bus that took you there (in my city of Manchester), there’s some event planners who plan secret sort of parties but it’s obviously marketed online on Facebook or Twitter but they are some pretty good replications, you can say people perfect their craft in what they do now when they try to recreate an experience. But I get what you mean, I feel this way with music artists today, no true musicians anymore, just a load of people on the internet connecting to the music in this way and not actually part of a culture who lived that genre and was true to that genre or sub genre, but some are super talented (some acclaimed ones to moderately well known to lesser known ones) and likewise perfected a craft although doesn’t feel as authentic. It’s a grey area at times what connectivity can provide, but we are living it whatever it is (my generation) but I can tell it’s not like the 90s or 80s. I think with connectivity too, it’s all about exposure and those are the artists gets the credit, some will never get the credit they deserve simply because they don’t know a thing or two about how to market themselves. With connectivity, freedom of speech becomes a little more restricted too, that’s one major flaw that seems to have naturally filtered through this partially press/government controlled entity where it’s establishments have to succumb and regulate terms that adhere to the current political climate enforced upon them.

There’s places that ran through the 90s that are getting shut down more often, but I think culture is thriving everywhere just not in a way that is considered nostalgic or feels as organic as once existed because the internet takes that edge away and is now a necessity for any project to function and the youth is mainly the reason for that because the youth not only depend on the Internet but grew up on it, but alas there are people such as myself who probably understand that and accept that. I think you’re right though, that particular lawless rave culture is dead and the information is not being communicated or fed in the same way as it once was way back when so it’s not possible to experience it in a way which was more possible when there was more disconnection amongst society, which in a way proved to be more progressive in terms of true and authentic avant-garde. I think people are more snobby now, and it doesn't help with brands like this being most appealing to the youth and the economy doesn't work in progression's favour, everyone I know is busy trying to make ends meet whilst at the same time trying to enjoy themselves which is why many opt for Uni as you have a freedom once in your life to spend irresponsibly and never pay it back (or at least that what it is to some) and obviously amongst students forms a rave culture, quite a strong rave scene here in the UK and from my experience it's been good w good experiences with all sorts of people and you still get low key raves or student organised ones driven by house music and drugs, except technology changes the way information is fed and the way people enjoy these moments. Obviously its nothing as insane as the 90s, with police raids and all that stuff as everything is regulated by the councils now, it was never going to be the same even if there was no internet involved due to property regulations. There are still minor organisations out there who try to facilitate off-the-radar raves, it of course is a lot more challenging these days since its a lot easier to trace information and there's less abandoned buildings to hop in as the councils try to slowly sterilise the landscape. There are lots of big houses on the outskirts of the city occupied by students which get used for raves and they can get really creative with the setups.

As a graphic design student from Holland I find that a lot of youth from my country (and my school, specifically) look to Russian culture for inspiration. I think Russia is very forward thinking and I predict it will influence a lot of fashion and design in the future. There's just this raw, anti-conformist edge to it that is extremely appealing.

Gosha was talking about the current moment, because it was during his work that the door to the international world opened for Russians. He didn't want to think much about the past and the future, because now is the best time to change his future through creativity. That was Gosha's idea. "It's boring to always look into the past" - meaning that a turning point has come in Russia and it's time to play by the new rules and show your art to the whole world, because previously no one except Gosha could do it.

These "designers" all act like they were a part of the street culture back in the 90s. But it is just too obvious that they were not. You don't want to be too involved in Russia's 90-s street culture too much, because there's a high possibility that you are going to end up being killed, going to jail or becoming a drug-addict. I genuinely love his idea and concept and what he's doing, I feel really comfortable in his clothes and I like the way they look, but yes the hypebeasts are annoying. Gosha didn't wake up and think "How can I sell clothes to rich American kids?" He had his own vision and hypebeasts just jumped onto it without a care for the actual culture or what he's about.
