Sanjay Leela Bhansali's new Netflix series Heeramandi's spectacular set interprets a magnificent world where dance, poetry, fine arts, weaving, and jewellery-making are nurtured and a time when great artists moved freely, without any barriers.
Bhansali’s earlier films Devdas (2002), Bajirao Mastani (2015) and Padmaavat (2018) were all grand, but Heeramandi is grander. It’s a brilliant spectacle, which beats them all in not just scale but also art and architecture. For seven months straight, 700 craftsmen worked at Mumbai’s Film City to erect the set on about 60,000 wooden planks and metal frames.

When Pakeezah was released many years ago, it was written off by the audiences then who didnt see the true picture but now its regarded as one of the greatest classics ever made, along with Mughal e Azam. I feel that Heeramandi too suffers the same fate. People do not appreciate this great work of art. Many years later it will be termed a great work of art and be regarded as one of the greatest serials released on Netflix.

The architecture is based on traditional designs, the jewellery and costume is truly handcrafted with pure materials. One piece of his work which went a bit undetected and underrated in terms of set design, vibe and aesthetics is Saawariya. I rarely watch Bollywood stuff, but I watched that one! It´s like entering an artist´s dream. Sonam Kapoor did a marvellous job and her outfits were on point. From the rich velvets to the wide flow of her dresses. And she´s taken Kathak classes at least. Then Rani as a tawaif was absolutely unbeatable. Just the way she chews and looks at people breathes tawaif. After Rekha ji, I´ve not seen anyone portray a tawaif like Rani. In both "Mangal Pandey" and "Saawariya".

From the Philippines here, when I was a kid I thought SLB was like Pedro Almodovar. Films with strong woman character & delicious visual buffet. but as I have gone through in life I realize the difference. Pedro being Spanish is passionate about emotions of love and death, the stories that SLB portrays is deeper. It has a distinct Indic character the separates the self from their "atman", even the background, the body movements itself can display this deep duality. Every frame seems to have been well thought of, even the weakest of characters that critics was saying doesn't know how to act, actually was just enough for the same role, and of course the main strong characters can really display nuances of villain and hero or victim at the same time just amazes me.
