Floridas structure is built to attempt to withstand these kinds of winds. Even the palm trees are naturally meant to withstand strong winds without snapping. This is why FL homes and buildings and roofs look different and are positioned different. Its all built with this in mind.

He's not talking about 27 years ago. He's meaning today. In fact, what he's talking about is because of Andrew. Pre-Andrew, buildings were not built to attempt to withstand those kind of winds. You have to go all the way back to the 1960s to find the previous major hurricane, Hurricane Betsy, that affected south Florida. Yes, I clearly remember the homes and businesses being obliterated by Hurricane Andrew in 1992, especially in Homestead, Florida City, Culter Ridge, those areas south of Miami.

@TheDr5026 жыл бұрын
Completely agree. Some things are better to experience on KZbin than in real life. A hurricane, no matter what category, is one of them. If I understand them right, they're within the eye. At this point, the skies will clear, and they'll even see mostly sunny skies because they're inside the hurricane's hole. They'll see the surrounding eyewall clouds along with the sunshine. That lulls some people into a false sense of security. They're about to go through Round 2.

My mom lived in Naples for 36 years. (passed away at 93, Jan 19th, 2019 in her own bed) She rode out every hurricane that came along during that time, in her 2nd story condo on Valley Stream Dr. (just off of Rattlesnake Hammock Rd) You guys were pretty close to her during your little escapade. Irma didn't do anything but cut the power to her place for a day or two and tore up some concrete steps in her development, but back when Wilma went through in 2005 it actually lifted the roof off her end of the building and slammed it back down. Tossed four big AC units off the roof down to the parking area. I ended up driving down from NY a couple of days later with my SUV full of supplies for her cause it was going to be weeks before anything was working again in town. She ended up having to move out of her condo for almost a year because of water and mildew damage and the time it took for the Insurance Co. to get things fixed. We just cleaned out her place a couple of weeks ago and I found some pics from back during that time. The town really took a beating back then, I had to drive over several palm trees in the roads to get to her place and there were abandoned cars all over.

Something I've wondered about evacuations during such events: since almost everyone is trying to get away from the area, why don't the authorities redefine 1 or 2 lanes of the other side of the freeway (or even 3) so they're going in the same direction? Bit tricky at junctions, but for those long stretches surely it would be useful.
@isarob036 жыл бұрын
One of the issues with evacuation is it takes too long. I had family that tried to evacuate Katrina in New Orleans but couldn't get out due to the sheer volume of people leaving. So they ended up braving the storm. That is an issue that needs to be addressed though.
@mapesdhs5976 жыл бұрын
Indeed, roads are designed for normal flow, not an entire city trying to get out. One of those times one realises just how many people actually live in a modern city. Btw, unless it's been changed since I visited in 1995, I'm sure one of the highways heading towards Seattle has an extra lane which is defined to be in one direction in the morning to help cope with rush hour traffic, and then the flow direction reverses for the evening rush hour, so it's not as if the basic concept isn't new to traffic authorities. Made me laugh in the ID4 movie when the guy is heading towards the city, everyone else is jammed in the opposite lane - I'd be tempted to cross over, stuff the jam! :D And you can bet as soon as a few people did that, a great many would follow. Still, I suppose it would then go fubar at junctions without it deliberately setup that way.
@DRumM3r9516 жыл бұрын
they do, i thought reversed lanes was pretty common in evacuation
@lilboomie5 жыл бұрын
when wilma hit ten years ago, that’s what they did. it was upsetting for myself and a lot of other evacuees seeing an empty 3-4 lanes on the other side while traffic on our side was stand-still. not to mention that everyone started getting stranded because there was no gas for miles.

Electric Heart the northeast eyewall had damaging effects as it moved inland. We still have houses with tarps in the roof even a year later. They can only analyze winds where there were confirmed measurements, and not many were measured in the areas where that eyewall passed over. The damage in my area was more significant than when Charley came through in 2004 with wind gusts clocked at 110 mph, so I don’t care what the post-analysis says...I know what I saw and heard as someone who has experienced a major hurricane in the past.

This is why my family lives down in Naples now. My wife is a project manager for a restoration company and we came after Irma. Her boss decided to open a office in Bonita Springs and asked her to move the family. Coming up on 2 years now

Irma was intense, and I'm from GA. I'm expecting a Dorian cover..... It's looking bad already, expecting to intensify to a "bohemoth" cat 4 before landfall, then expected to make a turn north east....

@Les Claypool Irma was intense for people who have never been through a hurricane. You don't tell me what I think..?? I'm glad you have been through worse. It really helped your ego towards others.

I live in Golden Gate Estates and thankfully we have so many trees. Unfortunately, we have so many damn trees. The pines blocked most of the wind from destroying most of the houses which were built in the 80s. The problem later on was the amount of debris and damage caused by projectile bark. The worst part about being in the estates though was we were two weeks without any service or power. The homes in the estates have wells that draw from the groundwater, which means clean water. There was no power so to take a shower, the generator had to power the entire plumbing to clean yourself. To power the generator, it was like Mad Max to get gasoline anywhere. I remember the worst part was the brutal heat during the clean up. You would wake up smelling like the whole week's work. I am grateful for all of the services that came to South Florida to restore the power and help clean up the debris.

This is incredible. This is the only type of weather disaster I have never experienced. I’ve been through earthquakes, tornadoes, blizzards, bad thunderstorms, and wildfires, but never a hurricane. If it were a cat 1 I’d love to play in one. Anything higher than that I’d get the hell out of there.
@ooombafuu44836 жыл бұрын
@Daniel Seaveeyyy bad idea, it was decreasing from a powerful cat 4-5, now to a one. It still has the ability to bring powerful winds and storm surge, rather a normal cat-1. Prime example; Irma, it was a cat-1 when it hit my home, but brought at least 3 feet of flooding in my back yard, I had to leave my house because the water was rising. Please get out of there, only stay if you're really interested in the results.

I wasn't even close to the coast (Forsyth Co., GA) and we got whooped with this storm. I'm sure it seemed worse than it was because I lived in an older house and all the huge, old oak tree were crashing down around the house but when there's a situation you aren't used to or never been in, it defintely feels more intense than it prob. is. Thanks for sharing. Brings back bitter sweet memories.

@@ghosttabby1373 let them do what they love, storm chasers are a thing, ya know. Storm chasers are pretty vital with huge storms. It's no different than people going into the military, police, firefighter forces. They can die and people who go in there do it because they want to and if they die- they died doing something they loved.

Why were the fire alarms going off?
@shawgage6 жыл бұрын
JProductions I think that water got into the electrical circuits and caused them to go off
@signalfanzane20856 жыл бұрын
It's a Fail-Safe, let me teach you a little bit about fire alarms. Inside a pull station there is a switch, just an ordinary toggle switch when you pull the Pull Station you turn the switch off when you turn the switch off you disconnect the low voltage signal wire this then puts the fire alarm panel into alarm and turns on the fire alarms. When there's a hurricane it can rip signal wires out of a building cut them or break an activation Appliance or a notification Appliance if it breaks an activation Appliance or a signal wire the system will go into alarm. If a notification Appliance get smashed up more than likely it will just put the system into a trouble and the alarms will not go on. Usually water Ingress destroys the system and does not activate the system.

I live in pretty much the heart of Modern Naples, so I saw a lot of the damage that was done to the city, and of course I have contacts living all over Old and New Naples so I saw a lot of what had to be put back together. Although I was not in the city at the time I’m happy I wasn’t because our house was treated to the old water damage, tree falling, porch being blown out situation. It really set us back a good amount of money and time.
