Don't get me wrong, the final product looks wonderful. However, the bends in the accretion disc are actually due to gravitational lensing, so it does look kind of unrealistic, as the lensing does not move with the camera, instead it is static in the accretion disc. Sorry but I'm a bit of a space nerd
I think it looks about as realistic as it could, remember, the black hole is spinning. The accretion disk will be spinning as well, it is actually a disk that surrounds the black hole, along its plane of rotation, like the rings around saturn, but you see it above and below due to gravitational lensing. Actually the lensing on a black hole is so powerful you can see all sides of the black hole simultaneously. It's basically a 2 Dimensional object in 3 dimensional space.
@xplosives17525 жыл бұрын
CuffRox oh yeah like the guy above me said it’s a spinning black hole meaning it would look like that

It was a wonderful achievement in visualizing a black hole. Of course you should remember that it was a movie and as such, the director needed to make it a bit more dramatic and aesthetically pleasing for the viewing audience. But it really is a testament to Prof. Thorne and the entire creative team how thoroughly they've gripped the imagination of the world and also of scientists with this cinematic imagery. Those physicists such as Prof David Kipping and so many others are as intrigued with "Gargantua", as are we who are not professional physicists. Best Regards to you all, my fellow enthusiastic fans of science and astrophysics 🌞🌛🌟

Contrarily to what is widely reported by the american press, the black hole depicted in the movie is NOT a completely accurate depiction of a black hole. While it is true they made an accurate physical model of the BH, the simulation was slightly dumbed down for the movie. The correct view is in fact asymmetrycal with respect to the rotation axis of the accretion disk due to the Doppler effect. But they neglected this effect for the movie because they found out it would be too strange for the viewers. Kip Thorne actually acknowledged that to his colleague astrophysicist Jean-Pierre Luminet who made the first such simulations. However, the full simulation is used for their research papers. Here you can view simulations that account for this effect: Color Animation of a Black Hole with Accretion Disk Accretion Disk around Black Hole Another interesting video that helps understand what we see: Kerr black hole with thin accretion disk

Anyone know what filters you would use in AFTER EFFECTS to get the stars to curve and bend like it does when the Interstellar spaceship is traveling at the speed of light ? Liquify ? Bender ? or some kind of Distortion effect ???
@dannjedi10 жыл бұрын
I think the Bulge effect might be what you're looking for (it's in the Effects menu under Distort). It's great for creating a circular distortion, and can be applied on an adjustment layer to effect everything below it. I'd try creating a 3D comp, with a multi-level starfield in the background. Then, move your camera to create the parallax effect, and apply the Bulge to an adjustment layer affecting everything except your starship element.
@dannjedi10 жыл бұрын
Okay Shanks FX, you got me all curious to see if I could do it. I built a quick and dirty sample After Effects project to test this--turns out that a combination of the CC Lens and Bulge effects did the trick. I used a noise generator to make a quick starfield, which I duplicated and scattered in 3D space. I parented the center of the Bulge effect to a stand-in planet that I built, and then let the CC Lens filter just stay centered on the comp. Moving the camera gives a really nice result. Hit me up at myfirstname.mylastname@gmail.com if you're interested, and I'll be happy to send you the project file.

This is really cool, but for one thing--when you have something as big as that black hole, the use of small elements is going to stand out. At the sizes we're talking about, the accretion disk would look a lot more perfect than that.

What’s interesting is that even though the CGI was the closest we’ve come to imaging a black hole, the film version didn’t even do it right. Since Gargantua was such a fast spinning black hole, it actually would have lensed light as a lopsided circle. Since Nolan didn’t want to have a lopsided looking black hole, he had the event horizon evened out to look like a perfect circle.

I always figured they would look like that since a black hole (space time) is 3D in our reality and it’s bending the light/radiation behind it creating that visualization. It’s easier to depict it as 2D though

Well Cory Heimann , not sure if you've seen our Steel Wool episode but u should check that out if you haven't, WARP SPEED with STEEL WOOL | SHANKS FX | PBS Digital Studios for getting the sound effects, I first try and figure whats needed... low end or high end. How does the SFX sit on top of the Music bed is another key component. If a sound effect doesn't seem to fit I always play with the Reverb & High / Low pass filters. Believe it or not that's the only filters I use. Also, I edit in 24 bit audio files, a lot better quality. Maybe we will do a SFX episode sometime in the near future.
