Jeff Kitchen has been teaching dramatic writing since 1989. He's written two books ("Writing a Great Movie: Key Tools for Successful Screenwriting" and "The Hero's Dilemma: Drama at the Heart of Your Story." In this interview we talk about everything from Aristotle to Alonzo (Denzel Washington) in "Training Day."
"My writing teacher [and playwright] Irving Fisk talked about how it really comes down to two boxers in a ring and only one of them is going to walk away. So it's a fight to the finish. It's all unfurling on stage. My teacher said Aristotle noticed that those dramas that grip an audience tend to have a good strong dilemma that builds to a crisis, forces a decision and action about the dilemma, and then the protagonist conclusively resolves the dilemma."
