shes funny - Now, I don't know enough about Catherine's stuff to pass judgement, but my gut instinct is she's probably more a comedian than a musician. Not saying everyone has to be Tim Minchin and have a 50/50 balance and be a virtuoso, but still - because musical comedians are rarer, even if they're meh, audiences eat them up cos they're refreshing and hearing a joke in song often enhances them cos its surprise of a joke, plus the surprise of hearing a joke sung. And algorithms tend to reward comedians way more than musicians - so musical comedians often get an unfair advantage I think. Getting laughs without a song seems like a lot more work to me - if you write a song with jokes that land, being in a rhythm and key and melody makes it a lot harder to mess up the inflection or timing and make a joke fall flat. Non-musical comedians also require a lot more crowd work. And btw, I'm not speaking out my keister either - I do improv comedy songs in my music sets and audiences usually love them I dabble with some original comedy songs too, but I'd rather write stuff that isn't funny usually, at least for now.
