Hello, back in Metro Manila ü Yes, "taga-" is both Tagalog and Bisaya. You can say when asking for the price next time: "Magkano (how much) ito ([is] this)?" [Tag.] Sampaloc/sampalok is tamarind ü Singkamas = jicama: a refreshing, neutral-taste root crop high in water content. Best chilled, on its own; sometimes Filipinos sprinkle salt or with vinegar. Also very good as fresh salad ingredient. "bagoong" = [bag-go-ong] fermented shrimp/fish paste (you had the shrimp version which usually is also sauteéd with some seasoning). "Lagas" = fallen (off) or loose. The guy actually said "no stem" =D _Ube_ = a root crop (pretty sure it'll come out in the comments) ü _aka_ "Purple yam" and yes! We do have ube ice cream. We reco to get one from the bigger grocery or supermarket and look for *Arce* brand [Ahr'-sɛ] to get a taste of something more authentic, then compare it with the street ice cream later. ⚽Unfortunately, World Cup football isn't very popular as basketball, esp. because its broadcast is in the late evenings / early mornings and via select cable channels, but take heart-there are locals who do (friends of mine who stay up late and root for the UK and Argentina). Nice to see you getting pretty comfortable with Pinoys wanting to take photos with you ü Oh, btw: it's [hah-lo / [hah-lo] 🍨 like when you'd say "Hallo"

“Ube, also known as dioscorea alata, is a staple crop in the Philippines. Dioscorea Alata is a species of yam also commonly referred to as purple yam, violet yam, or water yam. This tuberous root vegetable originates from Southeast Asia, particularly the Philippines, and is often confused with taro root.”

An awesome walkabout in Guadalupe, trying new food, talking to the vendors and locals. "Ube" sounds like "ubi" in the Malay Language, is a tuber like sweet potato (ubi kekedek), yam (ubi keladi) We have sweet potatoes which come in 3 colours i.e purple, yellow and orange. Haha...quest for World Cup Germany jersey begins...all the best, hope you can get it. As always, it's coooooooool to tag along with you, so pleasant and enjoyable. Thanks Ken.

Well done :) Re World Cup supporting England being my birthplace although I have lived in Australia for 58 years. Noted your beloved Werder Bremen doing well , mid table in the Bundesliga so that would make you very happy. For info: Ube halaya or halayang ube is a Philippine dessert made from boiled and mashed purple yam. Ube halaya is the main base in ube/purple yam flavored-pastries and ice cream. It can also be incorporated in other desserts such as halo-halo.

Ube is a purple yam. Yes, you should try Ube ice cream but, buy the Magnolia brand. We purchase them here in the States at Filipino or Asian stores. When we were younger, our parents do not allow us to buy street food due to health reason. We were told that we knew not how sanitary they were prepared. Always bring Imodium with you when you try street food. Actually, when we travel to foreign countries, it is always a good idea to bring along over- the counter medications for headache, fever, & diarrhea. Foreigners usually do not venture to crowded local areas for safety reasons. Prices in areas like that are not fixed. You can haggle. Items are not originals or branded. Keep safe Ken. Granny from the States.

Ken , try Philippine fruits. They are the sweetest. Guyabano is one of the healthiest fruits known to man and it grows profusely in the Philippines. I fruit cost about $10.00 in the States. About 100-150 Php in Philippines. Also try the high end bakeries which would beat the best French bakeries around. Ube is a root crop. It is sometimes mistaken as purple yam but they are 2 different crops.Philippine pineapples are really good.Chico is excellent too. Hundreds of fruits to choose from.

"Jicama"...in English, it's known as turnip. Nice to eat it raw with some sauce. We, in Malaysia, too eat it that way or use it as fruit salad which we called "rojak" Guess you miss this turnip and "rojak" when you were in Malaysia. Turnips can also be cooked as a dish to be eaten together with rice or as filling for "popiah"/spring roll. Must look for it when you return to Malaysia in future 😄😀

Shrimp paste, salty. Scatter them thinly, so it is not so salty. The fruit is also called, jicama! A root crop. We have, we call, wet market (fish,meat,vegetables) and dry market (clothings, wares) it’s speak for itself. Sometimes, you can see both, dry and wet, in a supermarket (fish, meat, groceries).

I'm amazed that you were brave to try most of the street foods and that ube flavor bread from the bakery with enthusiasm 😊 By the way, "ube" is a type of rootcrop and I think it's "purple yam" in English. Also, I'm assuming that "ube bread" you've tried didn't have any real ube in it at all. The purple color might just be an artificial food coloring.
@fredbadbaden53222 жыл бұрын
Ken, Ube is not a fruit. Use is a tuber like a sweet potato. It will grow big and long in the ground. The plant grow as a vine. When it matures, its tuber inside the ground is ready to harvest. The vine when it matures also produce little tubers on its nodes and those will fall down to the ground and it will again grow as a new use plant.

Kuya, Ube is purple yam, kind of like potatoes, only purple. The grapes vendor was trying to sell you"lagas" grapes that fell off the trees. Sincamas or Jicama (pronounced hecama) in Spanish is a Mexican root and it's bland in taste but it's good for prevention of cell damage in the body, without the bagoong (shrimp paste) of course. BTW, Mergim English KZbin vloger lives in BGC, might want to hook up with him incase you want to live in BGC. Thanks for bringing us along in your adventures!

Hi Ken! The white food on a stick that you ate from the mango stall is called "singkamas" or "turnip" in english while the so called sauce made from shrimps is what we call bagoong alamang or shrimp paste in english. It is salty in nature but there are some preparations or flavors that are sweet-salty, spicy salty, sweet spicy salty. About the ube or purple yam. It is not a fruit but rather it is a vegetable root crop.😃 Anyway, I might be reiterating the info becuase there might be someone who have already shared the info. Cheers!

Come on ENGLAND ! haahaha, that's what i will support on the World Cup :-)

Personally I like the yellow rambutan because the flesh is much easier to peel from the seed compared to the red one, but the red one usually much sweeter. The only German football jersey design that I remember was the one from the late 1990's, that has black-red-yellow lines across the chest horizontally.
