I love that this movie shows that your sense of self can override your emotions so you do what you believe. But your emotions can also overwhelm who you are and make you act against yourself.

46:49 Anxiety's not really in "time out", her Special Chair is more or so something she uses to relax and not overthink too much on the stuff that Riley can't control. Thus allowing her to shift her focus on the things Riley CAN control, like that Spanish test she needed to study for.

There’s a very realistic reasons why all the emotions aren’t at headquarters all the time. Simplest being, like nostalgia, you don’t feel everything all the time. Another reason could be some emotions just never emerge.

@freakcircus61092 ай бұрын
Obviously the second gen of emotions wasn't designed for the first film, but as far in-universe reasons, I imagine secondary emotions hang out in the back unless they're really needed. Like the parents don't feel that much anxiety day to day, but f.e. when the moving van accidentally went to Texas in the first movie, I imagine their Anxieties might've stepped up to the console.
@rafaelmatos58512 ай бұрын
We also have that with Nostalgia. She came up to HQ, but was sent back because her time to be there hadn't come yet. Obviously, Anxiety and the others will step back one they help Riley go through her puberty years, only appearing in other moments of her life...

I think the idea is that Joy, Sadness, Fear, Disgust and Anger are pretty much everyone's core five emotions. We've seen for different people they have a different emotion sort of "leading" the group though. Obviously Joy for Riley but then you have Sadness for her mom, Anger for her dad, Fear for Grace, etc. I also think by the end of the movie the implication is that it is different for everyone, some people might let something like Anxiety rule their life, others only have secondary emotions come and go as they are needed/appear. Hence why Anxiety for her parents only appears when needed. At the end of the day I don't think you're really supposed to get so bogged down on the "technical" workings of the emotions running the ship. They are just a tool for showing more nuanced ideas and experiences in a digestible way.
@JustNardo2 ай бұрын
Another thing I thought of, I think what this movie really shows is that all of our emotions (even ones like Anxiety, Embarrassment, etc.) are part of us and are just ways to try and help us cope with our world and lives. What happens in this movie though is that when our emotions are out of balance and steamroll other ones, like Anxiety taking control, we don't have our other emotions to balance it out. Our emotions working FOR us not our emotions ruling us. I think that's what the end with the light sort of calling to Joy represented.
@sleeples7852Ай бұрын
I would like to add that the names of these emotions are often taken too literally. Or better said their Funktion. People say that anger always means anger (her dad is always angry etc.), but that's not the case. Anger as an umbrella term can mean a lot. In her dad's case, he is protective. So anger is in charge. He is not really angry. Her mom has sadness, she is very empathetic (like we saw with sadness and bing bong). In this movie we saw that anger sowed compassion. He said how things were (frustration) but also encouraged joy to keep moving forward (passion, just like how he does passion for hockey). Even anxiety is not only anxious. It's also making sure you are prepared for a Spanish test or that you give thought to the ones you love (her mom. Yes worrying what her doughter does but I wouldn't say I feel anxiety when I worry about someone. But I also have panic and anxiety attacks so maybe I am wrong and what I define as anxiety is just intense anxiety and worrying is normal anxiety) In short: Under the umbrella of the (core) emotions, there are many different functions and meanings. So we can feel a lot of things with "this little" emotions
@SafiyahalishahАй бұрын
These movies also make you think about how easy it is to be pessimistic versus optimistic. Riley is a very optimistic kid, but that's only because her inner happiness is fighting tooth and nail to stay that way amidst an onslaught of what-ifs, don't-likes and this-is-bads. I wonder if they'll explore the concept of some emotions lagging behind in maturity in future movies, rather than just throwing in more emotions. Because, as @sleeples7852 said, we begin to process our emotions differently as we get older. In a sense, they become multi-faceted. But if you don't learn how to channel your energy properly, some of them can start to feel like wild animals. Then you get all sorts of emotional dysregulation and cognitive deficits. Anger management issues, naivety, arrogance, social awkwardness, so much can go wrong in there. (They technically could have gone that route with this movie too, to be fair. One could say, for example, that Anxiety is a sophisticated Fear because it uses conceptualisation and deep thought rather than simply remaining primal, sensory, reactive. Ennui basically does the same thing as disgust. The others are kind of a fusion, like Embarrassment being a cross-section of Fear and Sadness and maybe Disgust. But note that none of them fuse with Joy. Joy remains the only positive emotion, but they could have gone so many routes. Amusement/Humour, Hope, Confidence, Love.)

One thing I read in another video is why the father's primary emotion is anger, and the mother's is sadness. Anger can lead to protectiveness, which is pretty common in a father, while sadness can lead to empathy, which her mother certainly was doing. Not just dad is a hothead and mom's depressed, ya know?
@Drakoni232 ай бұрын
They've also shown pretty well in the first movie that sadness isn't depression. Depression is the lack of emotion, the panel turning grey, no longer functional. And sadness is actually the thing that took her out of that state.

Anger leads more towards Passion than it does to Protectiveness. Every emotion can lead to anyone feeling protective.

I’m a little late on this but I think the reason behind Joy’s “aura” or glow is what she’s modeled after. Every emotion is typically made to look like something relating to them. I can’t remember the others but Sadness was modeled after a teardrop and Joy was modeled after a star, hence her glow

I think it's also good to have a trilogy on inside out where Riley's older, maybe fresh out of college and trying to find a job and settle down and support her aging parents and dealing with "life". If we add new emotions, where Nostalgia can be represented by Grief deal with a trauma. I also think that we can also dive more into how the emotions themselves mature and Joy struggling to find herself: - Sadness -> Maturity - Anger -> Assertiveness/Drive - Fear -> Awareness - Disgust -> Disapproval - Embarassment -> Shame/Cringe - Anxiety -> Stress - Ennui -> Apathy - Envy -> Desire - Nostalgia -> Grief - And then you have Joy, lost and unable to figure how to grow when she's stuck in the old ways, constantly trying to be Hope or in search of Happiness (and getting disappointed when things constantly don't go in her way, especially when dealing with some major event/trauma/love/loss. And then maybe finding a way to grow into becoming the more nuanced and balanced version between happiness and hope: "Content/Appreciation". Being able to appreciate the things she is vs what she wants to be, and letting Riley understand that not everyone can get anything they ever wish for, but that shoudn't deter Riley from being Content with what she is and what she has, and appreciate it, while still holding on to those hopefully opportunities, and not letting Apathy take the wheel too long.

Overthinking being portrayed as overworked animators is too funny to me. I'm sure some of those brain beans are direct representations of animators who worked on this film. Like the first one, I love how the main plot is a simple slice of life story and any epic, fantastic part is only things that happen in the brain. I also get why Riley, who struggled when moving to a new place in 1 would develop Anxiety from the threat of being separated from her friends yet again, while also starting to go through puberty. Also the glow thing, I think part of the pitch for the first one was having a character that glows. On a technical level. Like part of making Nemo was Pixar wanting to work with water, and Monster's inc was to work with furred characters.

I think/I assume the existing glow of Joy from Riley was more of a aesthetic choice, so she stands out more, so the audience would know that Riley's Joy is the main Joy of the movie. I also thought maybe the glow represents innocence and maybe Riley still has that??? and her friends matured a bit faster???(+Riley's parents which are full adults) Still is confusing... because if they wanted to keep Riley's Joy unique and stand out, then why they had Riley's dad's Joy the same hairstyle as Riley's Joy?... every other Joy emotion had the hairstyle of the character(mother, Riley's friends). I can't find anything... i'll have to dig deeper, because it bothers me too :)))) There's also a possibility that they just said "meh this looks fine..." and they went with it, having no specific meaning.:))))) And we're squeezing our brains out for the true meaning here.=)))

I love this movie almost as much as the first one. HOWEVER, I have one not so good observation. Joy learns the same thing again as in the first movie. Then she had to understand that every emotion matters. Now she learns that every memory is important in building an identity, that identity cannot be based only on things that are nice to us.
@johnfrancisgillman68062 ай бұрын
I saw it more that the ultimate lesson being learned was that the emotions did not decide who Riley was as a person, that her identity was not theirs to mould.
@alexelion70842 ай бұрын
Honestly I don't think that's a flaw that Joy has to learn a similar lesson. People don't change that easily most of the time. Yes, Joy should've learned her lesson and she did in a way, but she's been on the "everything has to be positive" thing for a while, so at least to me it's expected that she falls into this routine again, just in a different way. She acknowledges the importance of sadness now and also is (reluctantly but still) welcoming to the new emotions by reminding herself that every emotion has its place. I think it's pretty in character that she needs another wake up call to REALLY learn the lesson fully and not just on a surface level, keeps it realistic
@RaquellyReacts2 ай бұрын
People say this is the same as the first movie but I disagree. The only thing similar is joy learning A lesson not the SAME Lesson. In the first she learns all emotions are equal and should be felt and she allowed them more control. It’s clear she learned that lesson when giving sadness permission to let Riley feel sad and say it’s ok we NEED this. She also allowed the new emotions control as well. In the new one she learns she can’t just dismiss all the bad memories and that Riley needs to embrace all of herself not JUST the good memories. The first movie was more about the emotions and joy learning to relinquish control and learning that all the emotions are important and it’s healthy to feel all of them. This one is more about Riley and her learning that it’s ok if she messes up from time to time and her learning to accept herself for who she is rather then pretending to be who she’s not in order to please others.
@Loulizabeth2 ай бұрын
The impression I got from. The first movie was that it was more about Joy's frustration with Sadness as an emotion. She could see the need for the other emotions. Fear kept Riley safe, Disgust keeps Riley safe but in a different way and anger was also seen as necessary. Joy was okay about them being at the controls. It was only sadness that Joy just wanted to keep away from. Riley at all costs from basically any memory. In fact she would get the other emotions to do jobs that utilized who they were but not Sadness. She was basically "bottled up" not in the literal way of this movie but had to stay in her circle prevented from interacting with Riley. The feeling I get from this movie is that Joy and Anxiety and the rest of the emotions all need to learn that none of them are meant to control Riley. Both Anxiety and Joy at the end have to learn they shouldn't control Riley and who she is. Instead by the end Riley is learning to accept all of herself and that she can't control her emotions but she can choose how she responds to them. After the panic attack is over Riley not the emotions chooses how she wants to feel. As people grow up and mature we learn not to be controlled our emotions. At least that's one of the goals.
