@@kylecityy I'm reading his Confessions, and sometimes he talks quite a bit about psychological themes, like how our relationships can influence our own decision, the "Pear Story", and so on. And it's an amazing book overall

@@kylecityy I can second Steece4902's comment. I'm currently reading Augustine's Confessions and he speaks a lot about his emotions and thoughts throughout his life. 10/10 would HIGHLY recommend reading it.

@@kylecityyI'm not an expert on Augustine but some consider him the 1st Western psychologist because he wrote about how to understand psychological problems, namely his own mental battles, within a Christian context.

As someone with OCD-like symptoms and schizophrenia, I’ve found that directly attempting to stop anxious obsessing is a foolproof method of making sure everything gets WORSE. 😅 There’s no simple solution, but it’s never helpful to hear “just stop thinking that!” What has helped me in all cases is trusting God’s ultimate plan and His grace. ❤

Yeah, thankfully, I don't have crazy anxiety but it never works. It's like trying to get someone to not be angry by telling them to "calm down", it's only going to make them angrier and get it directed at you, if it isn't already.

Took my girls to see the movie opening weekend and they loved it. Wife and I really enjoyed it as well. Lots to ponder and think about. Pixar did an excellent job presenting the story in a way that was compelling to both young and old.

Really appreciate you making this! As Disney as a company plunges further and further into darkness, it's great that we can still extract some good truthful points from their movies. I've also been thinking about the video you made recently on entertainment and getting value out of it. This helped me realize that lessons like this can be good ways to get actual value out of normal entertainment.

Not sure Gavin's video is making any point or judgement here. Also, we should probably be careful to presume that Disney know what they are talking about with such topics.

I thought the climax of the movie being the juxtaposition of "I'm a good person" and "I'm not good enough" was essentially a cry for help. The answer was a hug scored with a bittersweet theme. I thought the movie perfectly demonstrated the hollowness and despair of a godless worldview.

Be anxious for nothing. An anxious spirit is the product of a soul who has not placed proper value and trust in Christ. This is SIN not something we ought to regulate. When I was anxious/worrying about my unborn daughters health that showed I wasn't actively reminding myself that God is in control. I needed to repent of that.

The word of God teaches us that anxiety which can be an umbrella term for fear and worry is to be cast upon the Lord for He cares for us. It teaches us that the root of fear, worry, and anxiety stem from separation. In Genesis 3 after eating from the forbidden tree Adam and Eve hid from the presence of God as they heard him walk in the garden in the cool of the day, they were afraid. Sin is the ultimate cause of it all and we feel the ripple effects of it and need to be reminded of the truth (God’s word) to overcome those feelings and emotions which are fueled by suggestions, ideas, and thoughts that many times contradict or oppose the truth. Trust and Faith in the Lord builds a foundation to be armed for the fight in the battlefield of the heart and mind.

Hey Dr Ortlund! You should really consider doing film reviews. Your commentary on current social discourse has always been thoughtful and insightful. I am certain that your commentary on film would likewise be useful and edifying to the Truth Unites community. More Christian perspectives on the media we imbibe and the maelstrom of entertainment that pervades our world today are sorely needed. God bless, Cornel

I thought it was very powerful was the sense of self aspect Enjoy was only allowing Riley to have a positive test of self. Part of the issue was that regardless if it was joy or anxiety taken control, it wasn’t Riley‘s true sense of self until the very end. And it’s amazing what happens when you allow unbalance emotions to take control of the steering wheel and how that affects your sense of who you are and what you stand for.

Joy shouldn't control us either.. she leads people to abuse drugs, sex and sweets. Fear can help us avoid danger while at the same time too much fear leads to anxiety. Bible says we must fear the Lord because when he's mad it means that we're doing something wrong but ironically, the same God whom we must fear also tells us not to fear our enemies nor death because he has a purpose. He's like a lion who chooses not to harm us as long as we're doing Good and as long as judgement still isn't being held. 'feelings' shouldn't have been leading our minds in the First place. Rationality, and wisdom can but it only goes too far. what we all need is the Holy spirit that sustains. He must lead our rationality and wisdom. Emotions should be on the side helping us sense danger but also giving us the privilege to enjoy great moments or help us vent through grieving when there's a season to weep.

Inside out 1 was better. Soul was more interesting to ponder. Every time Riely's sense of self kept saying "I'm a good person" I kept thinking "No you're not." But at the end they did kind of address that. So I was pleasantly surprised for a secular movie.
@chaddonal4331
@chaddonal4331 3 ай бұрын
Keep in mind, “I’m a good person” was one of the self scripts she had heard and had been owning (as a child). And “you’re a terrible person” and “you can’t do it” were among the adolescent scripts she began owning. Of course the biblical truth contains a complex mix of our goodness from the image of God in us, which is terribly tainted by sin. But not a bad secular take apart from divine revelation.

While true - totally depravity,etc… , in another sense yes very much there are good people. The way we treat each other, families friends being good citizens. And there are bad people, criminals, corrupt leaders, human traffickers, warmongers…
@chaddonal4331
@chaddonal4331 3 ай бұрын
Scriptures like “filthy rags” must be interpreted in context. This has to do with legally establishing righteousness apart from God. The fuller reality of who we are is tainted good. We are made in the image of God and to the degree that we reflect the image of God, we display His goodness. But we are deeply marred by sin and to the degree that we respond and act from our tainted flesh we malign His glory and goodness. Meanwhile our redemption in Christ begins our restoration process as the Holy Spirit makes us increasingly holy. So, we do all have a mixture of both God’s goodness and sin’s tainting within us. This accounts for the limited goodness found among unbelievers under common grace and the increasing righteousness available to believers being transformed by the Holy Spirit. Filthy Rags is a legal description of our desperate need for God, rather than an experiential reality of the degree of His image shining forth in and through us.

@@TruthUnites In contrast to the story of the movie where Joy must take a back seat to Anxiety. Philippians 4:6-7 "Do not be anxious about anything" Matthew 6:25-34 "Do not be anxious about your life..." On the contrary we should rejoice always (1 thess 5:16 and Philippians 4:4), because Christ gives us His joy (John 15:11) so that our heart is filled with that perfect joy (Psalm 28:7)
@ChristianCombatives
@ChristianCombatives 3 ай бұрын
@@THJSTrickshots It's a command of comfort, like "Do not be afraid". We don't need to be anxious about anything because God is in control of it all. In any of the verses that speak about anxiety, God always speaks that it should go away and not persist. On the other hand we are told to have joy in all situations, even persecution.
