I was glad to be in a nearly empty cinema screen save for a row of kids 2 rows down because I sprung a full Niagara Falls level waterworks watching this 😭 Pixar can tug those heart strings so expertly for both children and adults while keeping it entertaining.

Honest question: Patronising I get, but what do you mean by an "overly sad" film about depression? Just one that isn't positive or hopeful?
@tylerfun3158
@tylerfun3158 2 жыл бұрын
@@MikeMozzaro Real levels of sad are your simple efforts simply failing. Overly sad in my mind is that happening right after your dog dies and it's your birthday. One situation feels grounded and reasonable while the other feels forced. Not that really bad series of events don't happen it's just that they don't happen constantly for most people.

24:32 "Sometimes, you have to be sad." And that's the lesson Joy just figured out. Being in charge is _not_ about keeping Riley happy. It's about keeping her emotionally healthy. And that means giving _each_ of her emotions a turn, now and then. That's why each emotion is there.

This movie tears me up. I have an almost 10 year old daughter and watching her personality and emotions mature and change is like the saddest thing a parent can witness, so watching Riley lose all her fun young memories is truly heartbreaking.

It gives me a far better understanding of what my parents went through, when I developed a chronic depression in my teens (about 15 years ago). Back then I was so focused on my own issues, that I rarely considered how hard it must've been for them to watch me go through something like that - even now, it's still a struggle for me to find joy (pun intended), but when I do, I make a point to let my family know, so they can see my ups as well as my downs.

When I was really really young I had a few stuffed animals that I treated like friends, one in particular was a puppet of a floppy eared dog that I named Little Pup. I remember him like the back of my hand, but I don't remember what happened to him. My family moved a lot and rarely was there any feeling of permanence, but I brought Little Pup everywhere😀

But Joy was such a control freak at that point that she was probably too paranoid to let the core memories out of her sight. She didn't want to let them go and risk anything happening to them.

This is my favorite Pixar movie! It was such a creative idea to teach kids (well, all of us) about our psychology through an animated movie. I loved that you got it from the start! You basically voiced exactly my feels when I first watched it. I tear up every time I hear Bing Bong say “Take her to the moon!”, and when Joy and Sadness work together at the end.

It starts the first night in sf, when her mother asks Riley to help the family by being a “happy girl”. She represses her natural sadness at moving, causing a depression that ultimately makes her “numb out”. I love how near the end the whole control board goes dark, meaning she can’t experience any emotions. That’s exactly what depression feels like

Yes it was such an accurate take on depression, I was so impressed. Really spoke to me as an adult but I can imagine it would be very helpful for kids too.

7:54 This scene, I think, provides a _couple_ interesting pieces of insight. The one that everyone picks up on is that these five core emotions within Riley's mom are all female, within her dad are all male, but within Riley, they're mixed, and that's probably due to her youth. They will change as she comes of age. But the one that I've picked up on is which ones are in charge. Within Riley, Joy was her first emotion, and so Joy is in charge. But within her mother, _Sadness_ is in charge. Does that mean _Sadness_ was the first emotion she experienced? Within her father, _Anger_ is in charge. Does that mean _Anger_ is the first emotion he experienced?
@jbwarner8626
@jbwarner8626 12 күн бұрын
I think it's meant to show how much more nuanced your emotions become in adulthood. Mom probably has Sadness in charge because she's a very empathic person, and Dad probably has Anger in charge because he's driven by passion and ambition. If there's one thing this movie taught us, it's that seemingly negative emotions can do positive things for us after all.

Something to bear in mind. Joy's hair and eyes were always blue while all the other emotions except for Sadness had different color eyes/hair that fit their skin color. I'm not sure if this was meant to be foreshadowing the 2 sided coin of Joy/Sadness but its a weird coincidence if not!

4:24 "Eat me! I'm _organic!"_ Now I'm part of this minority that doesn't really have a problem with broccoli, but it's _not_ a pizza topping. There are things you _just_ don't put on pizza. Heat it up in a bowl and eat it with a fork. Maybe melt some cheese over it. Maybe even put ketchup on it. But it's _not_ a pizza topping.

I love how sadness gets this compulsive urge to touch memories and make them sad and make Riley feel sadness. It's how we deal with new environments, a way to show vulnerability, in a way Riley is mourning her old life and Sadness responds to that by touching the memories, tinting them blue in nostalgia but also forcing them to stay blue until Riley can mature enough to see them as happy childhood memories again rather than everything she lost. Joy trying to force Sadness to stay away and hidden only makes it worse and makes Sadness act impulsively even more

20:41 At some point, when you have to chance to emotionally cool down, this scene can look kind of odd. I mean, why is _Joy_ experiencing... _Sadness?_ Does this mean that Sadness can experience _Joy?_ Does this mean that it's not just _Riley_ with these five basic emotions in her head, but each of those emotions, as _well?_

I love how Riley's dad's emotions were all men and Riley's mom's emotions were all women but Riley's emotion's gender are mixed.. It can mean two things Either Riley is questioning..And once she figures out her gender...Her emotions will become the gender she is sure of or it means she is not one of the two genders also Riley's emotions are childish and immature(which is why at first sadness may have come off as irritating but she was just curious..Also that is indeed what we feels sometimes) unlike her parents whose emotions are very controlled and stuff.. Cause these emotions are children as well.. the emotions are as old as they are
