@@neighborhoodk3477 wrong lmao, she was NOT a villain. she was both the protagonist and an antagonist. in the beginning while sadness was the antagonist, joy was the protagonist, and then they swapped, sadness was a protagonist while joy was antagonist, then toward the end both were protagonists again. villains are characters that are evil and remain antagonists the entire story (all villains are antagonists but not all antagonists are villains, these are not interchangeable terms). while yes, a character can't be both the protagonist and the antagonist at the _same_ time, they CAN change roles over the course of the story as joy does. in fact, you could even argue that joy is an antagonist from the very beginning, and only becomes a protagonist in the third-fourth quarter of the story

@@MonAhgasInsomniAroELF they are deuteragonists. Joy is absolutely a villian. She's a fucking asshole. just bc she has a smile on her face doesn't make her morally correct or again not a fucking asshole. Sadness never once took the protagonist role so yea she was the antagonist, the antagonist just changed Joy's perspective

@@MonAhgasInsomniAroELFsadness was never an antagonist, she was simply trying to do her job as an emotion and no one understood because they were in a new situation. What sadness was doing in the beginning was exactly what she needed to do in the end. Trying to prevent sadness is what made the situation worse.

I think there is a purpose of that. Since Riley was trying to be happy for her parents, Joy also tries to contain Sadness and deem that being sad is not the appropriate emotion to have. And since Joy was the protagonist, the antagonist was first deemed to be Sadness until they slip in the Bing Bong scene where we realize, it is okay to be sad. That was when the roles were switched. Brilliant storytelling because by the end of the movie, EVERYONE would be like it's okay to be sad.

Some context that may help explain the dad's behavior at the dinner table is that he just got a job with (presumably) a startup in San Fransisco-one of the most expensive places to live, and the moving truck didn't show up...I think like many of us he just zoned out at the dinner table to give his mind a break. He's a great dad from what they show.

He moved across the country to downtown San Francisco in 2015 for a job that involves him being at surprise investor meetings. So I think it's safe to say that Riley's family are multi-millionaires, possibly billionaires, by now. Those skinny houses on steep streets are iconic, and worth millions nowadays.

I have a theory that in the movie the reason Riley parents call her their “happy girl” is because when she was a baby she smile and giggled which is unusual because babies cry in the first hours of being born.

There was one post where it pointed out that Sadness was the middle emotion for the mom and Anger was the middle emotion for the dad, kinda like Joy was for Riley. And I agree that Riley was going through depression after moving, which was why Sadness couldn’t explain why she kept messing with things in the HQ. Hoping to see new emotions in the sequel.

This movie was me when I was a young teen. Moved from where I’d lived all my life to a new town to live with a parent I hardly knew. It was accurate as to what depression feels like. There’s no joy, there’s no sadness. You’re angry, fearful, disgusted with everything and numb. It was letting out my sadness to my sister, and really showing how hurt I was that helped. And from each of those core emotions we get the rest. Like from sadness there’s empathy and compassion. Hence the mother being controlled by sadness. Where as from anger comes protection and discipline…hence the father being controlled by anger. It’s an amazing tool to teach kids that their emotions are all valid and equally important. Glad y’all liked it. I can’t wait for the next one.

You guys caught on to most of what was going on with Riley way faster than most other reactors. Especially Rob. Good work here. What I love about this movie is that it's a simple way to talk about complicated feelings. If you're a parent, USE THIS. Watch it with your kid, and then if they're acting out or acting weird, talk about how they're feeling in these terms. "When you did that, which emotion do you think was running the board? What color was that memory ball?" And so forth. It basically creates a language that you can communicate with kids about things that they don't usually know how to put into words.

@@Maxwellish he was the opposite of the rest. He had more understanding on the emotions. But less for the parents. It wasn't really on the parents that Riley fell into a spiral. We see sadness as Riley's consciousness feeling regret and sorta homesick. And disgust and fear made Riley subject to overthinking everything. That could've been avoided if then parents noticed, but it also could've been better if Riley came out and talked about it. Dad being busy with work and mom being busy with the move and the movers. Things were going wrong. But the parents wanted Riley to be happy that's why they tried hockey... But she didn't want to be happy there. She needed to find happiness again. That's why at the end, they needed Sadness. To show that she wasn't all that happy about the move. And joy to show she would do her best to make the most of it

No, Sadness did not cause this predicament. Sadness felt COMPELLED to touch the memories, because she doesn't control _when_ Riley is sad, but how she _expresses_ that sadness. Joy is the cause of everything out of her need to be in control the whole time, and to make Riley be happy at what is a stressful time in her life. She needed to grieve, and even when she was alone by the park railing and starting to feel it, Joy pushed Sadness back down and insisted that Riley show herself as happy. This is called Toxic Positivity, and like you guys said at the beginning, happiness and sorrow need to balance each other out. Joy's continual insistence on pushing Sadness out of her spot at the control board and in HQ is a problem, and if she had just LET Sadness do her job instead of insisting that NONE of the Core Memories were allowed to be sad -- and her trying to interfere with letting that Core Memory go -- none of this would have happened.
