As a Colombian, I remember how many mixed feelings I had when this movie came out, cuz on one hand, they really managed to portray so many little things that identify us and that's really cool, but also, seeing the conflict and forced displacement, as well as the generational trauma that most families in this country carry bc of the violence, so in my face was... tough

one of the theories for why mirabel didn't get a gift is because she's the next head of the family (like abuela). and she did unify the dysfunctional family and lead them into a "new era" of harmony and acceptance so to speak.

I love the imagery in this movie. There are so many layers to some of the songs, especially Luisa's Under Pressure song. Also did you notice that, throughout the movie, Abuela was always wearing that black shawl? She took it off at the end after reconciling with Mirabel. It showed that all throughout her life she was still in mourning and had never let go of her husbands death. She was still holding on to her grief and fear. The line in the song at the end, "But stars don't shine they burn was such an important message. When you shine, you are reflecting someone else's light, it isn't your own. But when you burn you are radiating your own light. Everyone had to learn that they weren't a reflection of Abuela or the name Madrigal. They were all special on their own.

Also the ✨perfect✨ child does mistakes but tries to hide them or fixes them because “how could YOU do that?” It turns you into a bitter person because all you did was try to meet your parent’s expectations and now you’re a machine that can’t be as free to make mistakes as the others, I literally learned to be sneaky so ny mistakes can’t “disappoint” my family

As I understand it, there are those who are granted powers by the house and others who are more closely connected to and therefore run the house. That, allegedly, is Mirabelle’s gift. Much like her abuela was once part of the house, she, too, is a part of it; thus, will she likely be charged in making sure the next generation of her gifted family never forgets their initial blessing and proceeds to pay it forward to the community.
