Congrats on this great new space!! Can't wait to see all the pianos lucky enough to get the Ben treatment! As one of Ben's very happy remote customers, I can say that even if you live very far away (like I do), owning one of his pianos is a wonderful thing. I wouldn't hesitate to do it again.

David!!! Thank you so much for saying hello and adding to the positive vibes! (Also, I may have to snag that testimonial for my website.) :-) I sincerely hope you and your Baldwin L are still getting along famously.

🎹 Your craigslist ad for the Baldwin "R" got my attention. I had been interested in a restoring my 1981 Mason "A" but Mosaic was not very interested at the time. Perhaps our paths will cross one day. *I wish you great success.* 👍

@@insidepianos My tech told me that my action needs regulated and now I am thinking that perhaps this piano needs a complete restoration. It's 42 years old, so you know what I'm dealing with! Lol.

Very interesting point about your Baldwin Grand project (new strings/hammers).... ...so as a used piano, it will be a better piano for the price than a new piano (at the same price). I am familiar with that dynamic from microscopes. A "microbe hunter" needs to move the slide around under the microscope to hunt for, and to follow around, swimming microbes. And there are two dials that you use for that (like X and Y movement). And quality, 1990's, used microscopes (e.g. Japanese Olyumpus BH2) have much, much higher quality slide-positioning dials, for say 1500 dollars, than any new microscope for the same price. So back to pianos, I am playing a 1911 Boesendorfer grand piano, with new Abel hammers, original Strings, original "Wiener" action. I paid 3000 dollars for it and 1000 for the new hammers which I installed myself with fish glue (canadian). I am about to start restringing the C4 area (C1 in Austria). Your thoughts on the sound? Recorded with two Rhodes 5/very indirect, focus right scarlet pre, audacity.... I am trying to bring the piano in the "Steinway" direction, meaning rounder, less square wave tone (less whiney sustain, after the attack). But with that said, I am happy that it has a bit of that "old lady" Boesendorfer brighter sound (very light sound board).... Will new strings (mid and upper rangers) help to bring it into the Steinway direction a bit? kzbin.info/www/bejne/g2ebaql5et-obbc

That sounds liek an exact parallel--microscopes and pianos. Of course advancements have been made, I would think, in both products in recent yrs. But when comparing used items with new ones at the same price point, the used version will have been a superior initial product. Add to that attention to detail that showroom pianos rarely if ever get and it's pretty easy to blow the new piano out of the water. To your piano: I would definitely expect restringing to move you away from that whiny sustain sound. (I'm going through the same frustration with my 9-ft Baldwin.) Be sure to level the strings; mate the hammer precisely to each string; and, before mounting the new strings, find a way to shape up the V bar, just barely removing the string grooves. That last procedure will clean up the sound significantly. As for moving things in a "Steinway direction" I'd be cautious in my expectations. It's a different underlying design than Steinway, a different aesthetic goal. But you should be able to achieve more roundness and a nicer sustained "vowel" to the sound by restringing. Last thought: I think the hammers sound really well suited to the piano. Sometimes with Abel hammers you can get more sustain out of the treble with some shoulder needling. You want the shoulders to have some spring in them so they bounce quickly off the string. If you don't have it already, the Complete Voicing Guide by Busby (an eBook) is an affordable resource which will lay things out with more detail. I look forward to hearing the results!
