I went to throw it away, and my coworker insisted I wait for the manager to tell me what to do with it...it was one of my first jobs so I didn't fuss, just set it aside figuring there was a certain way to dispose of it. Not only did that cheese sit on the floor for about 30 minutes before I could grab it (in the middle of a rush) it set out of temp for hours. When I came back from my lunch, there had been a shift change so I was working with someone else (an older lady who had worked in this deli for over a decade) and I had noticed the cheese was gone, and I asked about it..she told me she had sliced it and sold it to someone...when I explained what had happend she just laughed and said "oh well" I started telling everyone I knew not to come to that deli unless I was the one to serve them because I was the only one who actually gave a damn

I worked at a restaurant for 1 week that had some serious problems. The owner was also the head chef. He was from France. He had problems with me charging the water in the after it was filled with food and grease. He said it cost too much to heat the water. At the end of my first night , I grabbed a broom and started sweeping. The owner told me to put it back away. He closed everything down and we were leaving 5 minutes later. There was food and trash all over the floor in the kitchen. Those were just two examples of what I reported to the health department the next day. Four day later , a health inspector walked in unannounced and 10 minutes later; we were shut down. I don’t know what kind of health code regulations exist in France but their apparently more relaxed than the U.S. The restaurant shut down about 6 months later after it was in the newspaper about the problems. The owner never did find out that I was the one who reported this but people were going to get sick. I only wanted the owner to take cleanliness seriously. I wasn’t trying to put him out of business. He put himself out of business by leaving garbage on the floor after closing. I worked in a different restaurant where cleanliness was very serious business. We removed deck drains for scrubbing. The lugs of tables were scrubbed. Rubber mats were taken outside and hosed down everyday. The floor was washed down at least once a day.

I worked in a restaurant for about 6 weeks (then left because I got a better job). The owner did everything to the book. Cooked and raw meats were on completely different shelves, fish was on a shelf of its own, vegetables and fruits on another set of shelves, and everything else was put in a specific spot on the final set of shelves. When we closed at 9, we wouldn’t leave until 11 or sometimes midnight. We had to clean the remaining dishes, mop and sweep the floors, clean the rubber mats, clean out the kitchen equipment, change the water in the steam table, clean the cutting board and other line equipment, wipe down the inside of each fridge to keep them clean, and then we would clean the dish washer and the sink the dishes went in. It took a long time even with 9 people all working at once. It doesn’t just take 10 minutes to clean an entire kitchen, it can take up to three hours sometimes. So when a restaurant stops making food or stops taking orders, it’s because they have so much cleaning and doing another order will set everything back. But it’s also easier to keep things clean than to let it fester and get out of control… and then have the restaurant shut down and have to clean up all of the gunk and built-up crap from when you hadn’t cleaned it. If you won’t keep your kitchen clean or won’t make sure the job is done, then you shouldn’t own a restaurant.

I think its safe to say that absolutely every restaurant has some things hiding in their closet, no matter what type of restaurant or how expensive it is. But Im fairly certain that in the majority of cases its rather minor things, not much different to everybody's kitchen at home. But this here is shocking even compared to the usual "bad of the bunch". It literally looks like there has NEVER been anything done towards cleaning or sanitation or food safety or whatever.
@deleqtronica87332 жыл бұрын
Honestly you’d be surprised how clean restaurants are, it’s the small mom and pop shops that are hit and miss. It’s what popularized franchises, consumers have a certain level of confidence knowing the cleanliness and quality before stepping inside. Chinese culture has deteriorated in the last 70 years, China would of never compromised their value for an extra buck but the CCP has destroyed all traditional Chinese values (which were more closer to Japanese/Korean values) and has instilled a “make money at all expenses” mindset in a lot of a Chinese thus making their businesses and products shoddy.

They had 4 total violations, but health inspectors made it way bigger deal than what it was, it ended up in local papers, and people were scared that from what the health inspectors said "they could be leaving meat out forever and serving it, and not cleaning the kitchen." like I said I worked there six years later, and the owner was still shook over that visit, he was gone, and he was the only one at the time there that spoke good English, I asked him about it and he said "That's why someone's always here now that speaks good English, doesn't matter if it's me or someone else you see how clean I am and how I keep up to code and If a health inspector comes in I need someone that can vouch for that". There is a moment when a business is going out of business from not having any more money. So many other things are not being paid. When the employees realize they will not be paid or the final paycheck bounces they walk out. In some cases they take anything of value they can get hold of. This could include client files, equipment, supplies, etc. A Nursing home in the San Francisco Bay Area abruptly went out of business one Friday. The relatives took some of the patients. Other arrangements were made for several. Many were stranded over the weekend. The Police and Fire department knew about it. State regulatory agencies knew. They all took the weekend off. Licensed and senior employees walked out. The elderly disabled were left behind with dirty diapers and wanting food. The only two people who stayed were a cook and a Janitor. Not sure where the other reply went asking how nobody knew, but no, it didn't smell, it was a pretty open area and well ventilated. It was an upscale supermarket kitchen, specifically the pizza station, and the cutting board looked like it was an entire surface on its own, there was a cutout in the wall and the cutting board occupied the entire space and was custom fit for that spot and even overhanged it a bit so it looked more like a table top than a cutting board, it's very easy to think it's a table or surface that can't be removed. What caused them was cornmeal used to dust the pizza getting into the tiniest cracks around the edges of the cutting board, and water leaking into those cracks when we'd clean it. I felt bad for the night manager who had to help me clean it, I was closing the kitchen alone when I discovered it and needed help since that cutting board is too big for one person to handle. It wasn't so horrible for me (but still gross obviously) because I've owned plenty of reptiles in my lifetime, and with reptiles comes feeder bugs of various kinds, so I'm sort of used to handling squirmy things that I'd much rather not handle. It does sort of speak of the incompetence of the previous kitchen manager though who left shortly after I got there, even if it was hard to notice you can remove that board. I discovered that it could be moved within the first week of being moved into that position, and she and her staff had been in there for years.

It is easy to tell when a restaurant uses questionable food safety practices. If the employees seem to not want you there, do not eat the food. If you smell any foul odor, chances are that they have plumbing issues from lazily stuffing everything down the sink instead of properly handling waste. If they are doing bad on the way out, you can bet good money that they are doing bad on the way in. The more welcome you feel at the dining establishment, the more likely you will find 'best practices' in use in the kitchen.

With 110 violations, it makes me wonder - at what point do the health inspectors decide to close an establishment down for health code violations? Obviously it is not 100~ violations. Each violation is a risk. It says they re-opened after the health code violations were fixed, but I highly doubt they were fixed - and if they were, they're more than likely extremely temporary fixes. No self-respecting business owner would let his employees put food on the floor, when in the next room, the toilet is backed up and the toilet water is all over the floor. About 3 years ago, I ate at a new restaurant, similar to the one in this video (albeit I hope it was cleaner than the establishment in the video). I ate in the restaurant, and something tasted really off, like not bad, taste-wise... bad age-wise. Roughly 4 bites in, I asked for a refund. I didn't eat any more of the food, and they refused to give me a refund. The owner argued, and argued with me. Customers are in the store, and he's wanting me to explain why the food is bad (something that I didn't want to do). So at this point, I still hadn't gotten my refund... mid-conversation with the guy, I immediately get the urge to vomit, not forced - and not just due to gas or water, I mean... I could feel that feeling you feel when you know you're about to violently vomit. I was barely able to hold it until I got outside, and it was bad. Unfortunately for him, all of his customers seen it, including the people eating. His greed, in not wanting to refund me 12$~ cost the man a lot more customers. He refunded me after that, telling me to never come back. You know, because the customer is always wrong.

I'm a health inspector. I've had my fair share of "problem child" restaurants, and this is like all of them combined into one. There's this thing called active managerial control, and it's clear they don't have that at all. Also, employee morale and the overall work environment have a direct effect on the practices and cleanliness of a restaurant. The more toxic a job, the less employees are going to care. Managers and owners, do you part. Set an example. Care about your employees, your customers, and your business. Otherwise, you can end up like this place and become a threat to public health.

A dented can is only a concern if its large enough to have broken the seal. This is easily identifiable when opened. Dents rarely do anything but these inspections never update because they need every excuse to charge you fees and remind you who has the power. Same thing for home inspections by gov... All nonsense. I had a house once not pass inspection because a gutter did not have a "splash block".. which is basically a little small 2ft piece of plastic that slightly slows the water flow. Why was this needed in an area with 20 feet of thick grass and a natural drain? What would this do? No one could answer but it was a MUST and needed to be installed for safety... Pay another FEE and wait another 5 days until an inspector can come out... Guess Ill go sleep at a hotel because its clearly too dangerous here.

I can relate. Roaches and rats are in pretty much all restaurant kitchens. I used to sell and service kitchen equipment like meat slicers, fridge, order printers, etc. It's expected to see dead roaches, rat droppings and worse inside kitchen equipment.

@@brianscorner5772 yeah but water from a sink overflowing going into the floor drain is the least of the problems that poses to health risk other than employees slipping

If even 10 more violations are found after the new inspection...CLOSE THAT RESTAURANT DOWN.

I worked for a trucking food delivery company and when I would check the trucks in every day, the drivers would tell me the restaurants that were clean and dirty in the kitchen. I’ll always remember that…THEY know!

I would say most places I would eat at tbh, but there are even some high end places that are really nasty. Like valet at the front, view of the water, over priced etc. By this rich neighborhood on my route a fancy ‘we change the menu every day’ place had about 10k cockroaches of different sizes crawl into their hiding places when I turned on the light.

@@whodat787 Yeah man. I could see the big ones and the little ones. They covered an entire restaurant kitchen. They were crawling on the walk in doors, the floor the counters the sink. I was crunching them as I walked. It was an infestation. Obviously I didn’t count them, there were easily thousands though.
