OMG, a lot of those clothes in Dotties bus were donated by people in Northern California, and I drove it all down to the slabs about three years ago. I can’t do it like that anymore, because I no longer have a cargo van, lol. But I had my cargo van loaded up with tons and tons of clothing and 700 pounds of dog food and cat food. All donated. The outside world is very kind to the residents of Slab City. I myself love the place. I have been going every year except Covid years, for about 11 or 12 years now. I stay as long as I can, helping, Andra Slaburbia with the dogs and cats. And when I leave, I take as many as I can/whatever Animals that can be adapted back up to Northern California. Thanks to Andra, I think we have gotten somewhere between 60 and 100 dogs/puppies/kittens out of Slab City before the intense, insane desert heat, and up to Northern California to get adopted. Every last one of them has gotten adopted. I will be heading there again soon. I really love the people and respect their reasoning for wanting to live in the Slabs. And I also respect the folks who want to live and lead a more private life there. I would stay there permanently, all year round if I didn’t love to travel so much. I can definitely stay in one place in my RV for a few days or even a week or so, but then I really want to scratch my itchy feet and get back on the road and find a new awesome place to go. For anyone who doesn’t know, Slab City has a pretty decent Facebook Page. You should join the group if you’re curious or interested in Slab City life.

@@richardstall4351 you’re welcome. I’m really happy to do it. And Andra is brilliant and got to mobile vet clinics that now come into the slabs once a month each, two weeks apart. So spay/neuter has really helped with the puppy population, and when people leave after snowboarding and leave there. Dogs/cats, sometimes very ill, behind. Andrew used to have to drive down to Mexicali to get medical attention for the sick animals. People left behind, and for spay and neuter, and also for medication for the animals. She is super dedicated and I’m so glad that I’ve been able to work with her. I always bring tons of stuff with me, and we either store it in a shipping container that is at the slabs until it can be given out specifically to the people who need specific things, or in some cases we just let people take what they need. Most people do not just show up and take a ton of shit, they just take what they need. It’s a good system.

I had the pleasure of going there as a kid in the mid/late 90’s and I believe it was Leonard that I met because he was still building onto it and it wasn’t as developed as what I see now. My family has photos but I’d have to track them down. Leonard was very nice and passionate about what he had created and as a kid, I was amazed at it.

It's awesome that Slab City is still going strong, I remember back when Leonard was still there (the man who built Salvation Mountain), back around 2008 me and a close friend watched Into The Wild, were deeply moved by it, and my friend took a roadtrip to follow a lot of McCandless' stops and Slab City was one of the places she went. She brought me back a DVD that Leonard was selling that told the story of Salvation Mountain, I still have it. I didn't know Leonard has passed but I also didn't realize how much time had gone by until now, lol. Great video, took me back to the 00s!

Your story is absolutely crazy to me because it's almost exactly my story‼ I got hooked also by the movie into the wild. Christopher mcandles, Aka Alexander Supertramp‼ I also went around the same time and met Leonard. I stayed with them hanging around salvation mountain half the day. We smoked a big joint together what a sweetheart of a guy. And it was a couple years after that he got in real bad health because he was still living in that truck in front of salvation mountain. Some people that knew him got together and pitched in and got him a apartment I can't remember where somewhere in Southern Cal I think. I think he ended up having diabetes real bad and had his leg or both legs amputated and then passed away about a year after that. But at least as last days he was well taken care of had a good roof over his head 3 square meals a day and people round them that loved him. Really loved your story blew me away. The funny part is I have never left the desert since I still live here now.

Also that day talking to Leonard I told him how I happened upon him in slab city and salvation mountain was from the movie. He told me that that big empty water tank just out of slab city Christopher had signed his name on there. But of course it was signed Alexander Supertramp. I wasn't sure if Leonard was right so I hiked out there and lo and behold there it was Alexander super tramp. Made me feel like I found a treasure that day

@@QuestofthenightI am someone who figured out this lifestyle as I been living here for 4 years, going on my 5th summer out here. It's quite simple...we use our toilets. Where does the sewage go? We dig a giant hole, cover it up completely, and that's our septic system. For running water, well RVs and trailers have pumps, all we need to do is fill the tank. But we also get water deliveries from local services who fill up our water tanks, and as for trash, we use a metal barrel and burn it, and then we take our cans melt it down into art work, or we just go out in town and find a dumpster to throw it away properly. Also as for 120 Fahrenheit, we use evaporation coolers. Depending on how well your EVAP works, it will cool the house down to 86-88 degrees, so you aren't dying out in the heat. BASICALLY, everything out here is more about how much work you put in your "property". We get electricity from our solar panels, or generators. I live completely off solar, and propane for my propane stove. This is actually about the same quality of life for everyone who lives off grid.

About 6 years ago, my kids' mom tells me she's going on a trip to California. She's taking our sons, early teenagers at the time, and they'll be visiting her friend and staying at her place. In case anyone was wondering, Leonard Knight mixed paint with the Adobe clay and that is how it has managed to not peel under the heat of the desert. When the residents were being harassed by the government, they took soil samples and tried to blame salvation mountain for polluting the environment, but the tests came back okay. So they gave up trying to get rid of Slab city and salvation mountain. This isn't the only video about slab city but I fear If they keep making more, it will bring too many people into the area And the freedoms will be lost.

There are pieces of art in East Jesus that I recognize, and somehow, the library and internet cafe look identical from years ago. Something that allows me to get around, travel, and live in, relying on nature as much as I can. ⁠@@kateramsay8462 he passed from old age. I met him a couple times in the early 2000s. I would ride my motorcycle from Ocotillo Wells out to the Salton Sea/Salvation Mountain. I even have a couple of postcards Leonard gave me still hanging in my garage.

I met Leonard after his caregiver died and he needed to move into a nursing home. I knew him for the last years of his life and he was a very sweet guy. I’m not sure if anyone knows the real story of his life before Salvation Mountain was born but he was peace loving and I don’t doubt the stories about him being a Vet. Thanks for the great video!

Hi Ryan, I only recently discovered your channel and I've been enjoying your content! I have some simple tips to improve your knife technique that aren't quite as readily available if you don't happen to have a chef in the family who's teaching you the basics. I've seen using one hand to hold what you're cutting and guiding the knife with your knuckles, you definitely should continue doing that and do it more (pretty much anytime you're cutting something), getting practiced/skilled with that makes such a big difference to your prep work and eventually massively increases your speed. Now for the simple tips that will facilitate that: instead of standing parallel to your kitchen surface/cutting board, you should stand at an 90° angle with the side that you're using for holding what you're cutting forward and your knife hand side away from the cutting board. This will make it much easier and more natural to actually slice/cut with your knife instead of just pressing it down. By making pulling motion across your body instead of the much smaller motion of pulling back when you're standing parallel. This also makes cleaner cuts, allows you to make much thinner slices and is just much easier and more natural. And one more little thing, if you want to extend the life of your non-stick pots and pans, you should stop using metal kitchen utensils with them, it scrapes off the coating a lot faster, consider getting wooden kitchen utensils. I don't know if you'll end up reading this, but if you do I hope it helps, or anyone else coming across this comment. I hope this doesn't come across as condescending, but as the genuine advice I want to pass along. Cheers~

I went to Slab City a few years ago, IT IS NOT SAFE, it is VERRRYYY drug infested and people get very violent at nighttime, I don't recommend unless you are with a lot of people who know how to protect themselves.

I remember being out at Slab City one year during the Wasteland Weekend event, think it was the 3rd year it ran. Most of the people we met at Slab City were cool, but obviously as in all places you have to be respectful of peoples privacy, some places were peoples homes so you had to be careful about exploring especially if you weren’t invited. It’s been a really long while since I’ve been there, definitely cool to see the changes 😬 Also remember that market! We stopped there on our way home. Glad to see it’s still around especially so the people at slab city have access to what they need.

we have a stonehenge in washington state. outside of maryhill, which has a wonderful museum. it was constructed as a replica of the original stonehenge in 1918 as a WW1 memorial to the veterans in klikatat county.

I used to go with my grandparents camping at Salton Sea in the early 60s. They would go fishing believe it or not and my grandfather had me believing that I caught a Marlin but hey I was only three so everything is unbelievable and magical at that age
