On the recommendation of their arresting officer and the Commissioner of Child Welfare, the court sends heroin addicts Jurie (14) and Eric (17) to Ethokomala Reformatory. It is their very last chance to break free from the life that has imprisoned them. For the first time in their short lives the boys' days are strictly regimented and they are back in school for the first time in two years, their movements supervised round the clock. They have now been off heroin for more than 4 months but this does not mean they have been rehabilitated psychologically and emotionally. Will reformatory discipline may not be enough to help them once they are sent back to Pretoria? For Eric and Jurie it may be a very temporary respite from the unpredictable demands of the street.

Bro, idk how old you are but im from Belgium, i will give you a huge gem of life experience. I hope you take it and remember it forever. We all know, once an addict, always an addict. Meaning that the thought will frequently return, i am sure you experienced that. Once you get older, you can back off from the urge more right?... Because when they get older, their thoughts become... "Oh it's not that hard now, i will be able to use once and then stop bc i am mentally way stronger." And it's nothing but another trap just waiting to happen. Once you're free. Make it simple, no other options, just stay away from it. I promise you that you won't end up regretting it ehen you say no. But when you don't, you are always over again opening the books just one more time to end up regretting it. Peace.

My husband and I worked at a place for Youth at Risk, not nearly as bad as this one. (for twenty years!) But even the bad kids come right, in a fashion, if they get the love they need. BUT before discipline you have to get them to at least like you, then they will listen. But they do find love and caring strange, as they have never had that before. But they enjoy it. Like star charts for cleaning their places (These are pre -criminals, or criminals that love to get stars, and Easter eggs, and a chocolate for coming first in something). I also blame the parents.

The last reformatories were closed by 2002. These days most youth offenders are sentenced to some form of alternative measures, or (if they are a real problem) they’ll be detained in youth sections of various adult prisons.

I was at a reformatory school, Atlantis Nywerheidskool,if it was not for the grace of the Lord I do not know where I could have been. I was sent there because of bunking school for three years. Today I am married 20 years with two kids. I am a lecturer at one of our South African Universities. I saw all my sins when a group of gangsters wanted to murder me I called out to the Lord and He altered time in a way that I escaped those gangsters. I gave my life to Christ when I was 14 at the reformatory school. I thank God for my life. These schools does not help all. Some kids even committed suicide. Give your lives to Christ, its the only way. Voel baie jammer vir die laaities.

I'm a teacher and work with kids that has similar issues, poverty, broken homes, abuse and some are also involved in crimes. It's really sad and it seems like these kids have no way of living an normal life. It's heartbreaking to hear their stories. Most of the time the parents are not in a position to even help themselves. It feels like a hopeless situation, but i always remind my students that this is not forever. Education is a way out. Try to do your best at school so you can get a good job and start your own life. Its very important to me that kids are happy, comfortable and feel safe in my class.

I went through so much of the same things they did, being female . . I just saw another side of it as well, but I ended up in Reformatory school, then (min-jail) 'verbetering skool' Tokai Cape town, and then a few times in jail... also 6 weeks for being caught with my then dealer boyfriend, I didn't think of family way back then, I just kept running away with the chain of thought that - I don't matter and bugger them all... - I was and still am EXTREMELY lucky to still be alive. I am 41 now and had such a huge epiphany 2 nights ago, never something I ever believed in because I even blamed God most of my life. I felt every word they said as if it was me going through it. I don't really see why I should respond in respect but I try to be humble in debate as best I can. All I did was make the point that you shouldn't have children if you're impoverished. It was directed at this particular family, and you are right in saying that it may not have been that way initially. I suppose it was wrong of me to make that assumption. However, I felt like the parents are more to blame than anyone for their situation, as do the interviewees in the documentary. I do believe that it is far more likely that things have always been bad rather than suddenly becoming bad, but ultimately I do not know. I guess my point is that they shouldn't have had children. I sincerely believe if they had made better life and morale choices, the kids would be in a much better situation, as is with all parents. You as a father should never abandon your children, and you as a mother should never condone drug use and prostitution for them. So here is some advice, in the future, just keep your mouth shut if you are basing you opinion on your own personal beliefs that are not grounded in reality or supported by facts. Also, go out into the real world, take a step outside your precious bubble of privilege and go out into poverty stricken areas and get to know a few people, and listen to their stories and how they got there. Maybe, just maybe then, you will actually gain some insight into how the real world functions, and maybe mature in the way you judge people.

I hate when they say it's the parents fault, because in a lot of cases parents do all they can, the best they can, but it still doesn't help. My mom was the best at raising me & very supportive but I turned to a life of drugs & crime right at 12 & no matter how much she tried to stop me or help me, it was no good. All of my friends came from great homes with loving parents & could've done anything with their lives but we chose to rebel. Now 20 yrs later I've finally cleaned up my act & realized that my mom was right & I should've listened, especially now I have my own kids. At that age I thought I knew everything & I followed the peer pressure of what my so-called friends were doing. Not all kids that do this come from the stereotypical broken homes, & a lot of times the parents do all they can but to no avail. On the other hand, many times it does come from result of the child having gone thru physical, sexual & psychological trauma & abuse, but that's not all of the cases.

When I watched a replay of the first season like 5 years ago I was shocked how bad the quality was. Believe me, many (professional made) series before around 2007 had bad quality if we would look at them now but we were used to it so we didn’t really care

A story that I nearly forgot. I stay in South Africa at the Western Cape in a city that's got a reformatory school for boys. As I was walking past the school one Sunday early evening coming from work a boy from school greeted a man and woman who were walking infront of me.The way they answered him told me that they knew who he was. He asked them through the window why they were letting walk so freely without robbing or attacking me. They ignored him and I was not even intimidated by his request because I knew that they were going to do the biggest mistake of their lives. I was armed for self defense and I was not afraid and zI showed it to him by passing his friends by. They just ignored me and I'm happy they did otherwise things should have turned ugly. No I didn't have a gun with me but since I don't like guns and don't even have a license for them. I had some good stuff to protect me.

It’s sad they they don’t have a program that helps to relocate these children and their families. Donations to help fund an apartment, family therapy, education or resources to help them get them back on their feet. Because no matter how many times theses boys go to jail or juvenile detention, they will go right back to the same way of life if they return them to the same neighborhood, the same streets. Jail or juvenile detention just teaches them to be better criminals when they are behind close doors talking to other criminals who are far worse than they are. It’s not the face they show in group but the real face they show behind close doors. They should be monitored 24/7.

It's so sad ...this is affecting all races and what breaks my heart they are kids who are influenced by crime on the streets and by parents who never cared about them. Let us know our children as parents and try hard to notice any changes in our children's patterns. Let us try not to give too much freedom and damaging false love to them. Let's be true and try to bend them while they are still young. Being left by one of the parents is no excuse for bad behaviour.
