For the first time I feel like all of this is actually possible. Weirdly server meshing was never the thing I was worried about - full persistence was. The fact that they managed to get everything in the game persisting without the entire backend dying over night from the massive amount of entities being stored is a huge relief. As big as I'm sure server meshing is, I feel like the hardest part is now behind them in terms of level of difficulty and massive unknowns. God speed you wonderful nerds.

Indeed, it's quite interesting to think about that. Server meshing certainly won't be easy, but I think PES was probably the much larger and more difficult task (and as you say, a huge unknown). So 12 years down the line and they don't have anything close to a working prototype of static server meshing, let alone dynamic server meshing. It's a make or break feature for the PU, and probably the hardest technical problem for the game. It should have been developed from the very beginning. I haven't even seen an in-principle explanation for how servers will be dynamically be allocated variable sized chunks of space to simulate (which is how they said they'd be doing it way back when). That is a SUPER hard architecture to engineer. If they went for an easier approach of using instances, you then have the problem of figuring out what to do with conflicting persistence data. I guess they are not sharing the basic implementation details because they still have nfi what they are.

@@DEATHTRUTH What? I'm an engineer. I know the difference between people who know what they're doing, and people who are pretending to know what they're doing. The tip off is when you talk to them and they just repeat what they have to do as if that was the answer. "yeah like, you know we have to figure out the best way to do server meshing without introducing a stack of problems, like how's the best way, and we're all here to discus that and like what will we be doing in the next year going forward" NEXT YEAR!!! , server meshing was supposed to have started one or two years ago, cause that's how long they've been talking about it. The real fear here is that Server meshing won't really be the holy grail to making a ton of people play in the same instance together. It was always a theory that it could work, and theories don't always come to fruition. I'm thinking they've been butting heads on it for 2 years and now realize that it won't work.

CIG never should have done this episode of ISC. We should have received a much more transparent and tactical view of where we are and how long it will take to get sever meshing v1 / Pyro live. Vague, wishy washy, veiled (unpleasant) information is no way to treat stakeholders. This left me with many more questions than satisfactions. Anyone remember 2018 or the Pyro wormhole demo years ago? A lot of time has passed since those events and if PES was completely blocking Server Meshing work, we should have been informed. My perspective: I work for a well funded start-up that for its first two years was 100% remote. I participate in remote meetings 5 days a week with 30 to 150 collogues who reside in 5 different time zones across NA, EU and Asia. We have architected and launched a highly successful platform in over 15 global markets in the span of 3 years serving well over 20 million users. I know server meshing is difficult, but even hinting that remote work is a blocker or non-starter is nonsense.

The video indicates they started on meshing and are looking to expand and contract areas of server meshing to better fit the need for the game and upcoming features. I did the math, which came to The average number of planets per system (of the systems whose planet count we know) is 4.34 with 110 systems that’d give us 478 estimated number of total planets. Currently there are 4 planets in-game. Suggesting that the number of in-production system are in fact ready and awaiting server meshing that gives us now 16 completed planets (12 in-production plus the 4 already in-game). * They have 0.84% of the planets in-game * They have 3.35% of the planets in-game and in-production I also decided to do it for ships, not based on number as ships vary in size and since they have yet to complete most capital ships numbers skew the result. I opted for volume, area, and length. * Linear: 17.5%, 23.1%, 23.5% * Squared: 4.04% or 4.11% * Cubic:0.95% At most based of length they are a quarter done, at worst with volume they are 0.95% done. Obviously volumetric estimation is a huge under estimation but it doesn't paint of good picture with regards to how much work CIG have left to do. EDIT: I was going to make an infographic but then I realised I can't make them so I just have a long rant document going over the math.
