Yes but the Jante law is kind of extreme in its nature. It isnt really about humility and more about how you can't show off things you for an example, bough with your hard earned money. That is why so many people resent it because it is basically jealousy.

I would like to explain how I interpret the infamous "jante law". I don't think it is about not feeling special and that I am worth nothing. I think it is a way to view the world as a humble being. Regardless of what I can do there are other people who can do things that I can't. I must also always remember that I can always improve. We acknowledge our own flaws and other people's strengths. That is what the jante law means to me anyway.
@smalbeaste
@smalbeaste 5 жыл бұрын
@@modlio745 The thing is, when you think too highly of yourself, you lose the ability to see your own flaws. Like for example, when you complain about certain people getting butthurt, then preceeding to become butthurt yourself with no apparent sense of irony at all. Let's be honest, no Swede ever brings up the Jantelag as an excuse while arguing.
@smalbeaste
@smalbeaste 5 жыл бұрын
@@modlio745 This is pointless. It's not a real law. It's from a fictional book written by some dude in the early 1900s. It's gotten public attention mostly because it's a moral compass that's so ridiculous and extreme one might think we could learn a lesson from it. Noone follows the ''law'' blindly, but it might just have a thing or two to say about our culture and tradition. How to be a more humble person, how the group matters more than the individual and how we can have a more pleasant existance caring about others more than we care about ourselves. It's basically the opposite of sticking your head up your ass, which is also an extreme thing to follow through literally. Noone will ever blame you if you're proud of your accomplishments. If you do something great, people will cheer for you no matter where you are on the planet, but do you really NEED to make a big deal about it? Does it really serve YOU well and are your accomplishments only visible to others if you flex and brag about it? In some cases, probably, and in other cases, probably not. Some people do go around their whole life wanting nothing but fame and attention, but they're never really happy. It can be an interesting thing to think about.

Fika is the hipstered up version of having a coffee break as coined in some part of Sweden back in 1910; "Kaffi" > "Fi-ka" and it's still what it means today, basically a coffee/tea break with a snack. It's the equivalent of having tea in the UK. Fredrik Lindström included this in his show about the etymology of words.

so I see a lot of comments about the "exaggeration" of the law of jante, and its because is so well rooted in the core of Swedish society that we don't really see it. Just make a comparison of Swedish culture to any other countries, its apparent.. but its changing for sure... millennials are selfish as fook. xD

If you go by that mentality your life will be in ruins. You are restricting the fundemental human ability to learn, you will degenerate into a spineless coward if you do not rigorously critizise and challenge yourself to improve.

"Jante law" or janteloven as we call it in Denmark, is something which derived from a book by the name of "En flygtning krydser sine spor", and in the book it is seen as something really bad, and almost a sort of caracature of the way people in outside Denmark lived and thought of each other. It's pretty bad to try explain scandinavia by the jante law, as it is ulimately something bad.
