i would say this video did not cover enough of indonesia government dilemma. on 1 side, indonesia government want to make more money and grow its economy, one of the primary way of doing it is through increasing palm oil plantation. the other side there are global concern about carbon emission, which Indonesia can benefit of using carbon trading. ultimately indonesia government need to decide which one is more profitable and sustainable. not to mention the influence of private company and oligarch in indonesia government that are more benefit if indonesia open more palm oil plantation

I only have a very surface understanding of all the factors involved, and I'm very much jaded by U.S. politics and capitalism, so the following is a genuine question, not an accusation. Is the Indonesia "government", i.e. the people in government positions, asking for more money to invest in honest improvements (e.g. more money to pay for fire patrols, healthcare for the people who are actually working to improve the land, etc.) or is it asking for more money that will primarily line the pockets of the people in government positions?

Also, the Indonesia Government is really serious to chase great economic growth. For sure the government want to do the best their can for the country, but they also must searching what the most effective way to boost the economic growth, and the answer is always hurting the planet. Such as, Palm oil industries that proven to be really profitable for Indonesia. Even the new men in office (the president) said “don’t be scared of deforestation” when talking about palm oil plantations. And this is only the start, remembering that the president and their cronies are really close with oligarch that work in palm oil industry. So at this point Indonesia is blinded by the fast money maker, without knowing the future consequences.

carbon offsets would work better if they were only a one time credit which needs to be maintained otherwise the credit is revoked. I really hope they don't treat them as carbon dividends where the estimated carbon sequestered every year is tallied. Carbon offsets need to be a finite resource and can't be part of a long term recurring source of greenwashing. The end goal should be that all land that can be protected is protected and the only way to offset your emissions is to protect more land or decarbonize your supply chain. If you're thinking "well what happens when all the land is bought, what can they do then?" then you are eerily close to finding out that the only way to actually improve GHG effect is to be carbon negative. We either get better science that proves that the protected land is sufficient to capture any remaining unavoidable emissions or we reduce emissions because there aren't enough natural ways of sequestering.
