Somehow I was able to contain myself this long and save one of the most dear video game songs I have to my heart for last. I can't think of a more hauntingly beautiful song in all of video gaming and anyone who spent any amount of time playing SM64 walked away humming this. I would even go so far as to say that this is probably the best overworld theme ever in my opinion. The chromaticism and perfect blend of classical and jazz really brings this overworld back to feeling like the very first one on the NES. It's a pretty bare song, while heavy in harmony is light in that there's no strong percussive element. I really wanted to capture that in the beginning of this cover whether or not staccato lead guitars sound silly on their own. I thought it was a charm in the original that couldn't be ignored. In fact, there was really nothing I felt I could leave out! Can you name all three snippets from the game I quoted in the second half of the solo?
I feel like at the end of every year there was a huge leap in my mixing ability right towards the end after a slightly, well, experimental stage. It sucks a bit to be calling it quits on weekly vids after this next one, but despite my bounds on the post-production side of things, I think it's safe to say my psyche could use a break. Not to mention my schedule. I played around with utilizing snare verb in a different way than before, something I've been wanting to try for a while and felt it really added to the mix. The rhythm guitars and bass were written to be way more involved than the already intricate leads so clarity was important here. It was tough to allocate enough head room in the lower mids for all the instruments but everyone seems to just cut those frequencies out and I really want to employ them more from now on. Anyways, a bittersweet ending to weekly cover videos with a song among my top 10 favorites of all time.
Year 3 is almost over! It's been a crazy ride but there's one more video left! I've done the previous two years' videos as a music video style outdoor vid, but I wanna try something different this year. Something I've seen many other people do and always wanted to try. It could be awesome or it could tank! Needless to say, I'm excited!

Strange, I never really even considered this track at all until just now. It was always just kind of a background track for me, one that didn't really stand out a whole lot, but I can see where you're coming from with it. I guess it's nice to get away from all the overdone popular tracks with their aviator sunglasses and popped collars once in a while though. Looking forward to that final video!

nah, its just that theres a definite trend among rock/metal YT-VGM musicians to cover a lot of the same tracks. it just kinda caught me off guard to see that this is the one that julio was all hyped about, since I haven't seen it done before. I can see how my comment might be construed as kinda mean tho

This song got so old & redundant to me while playing SM64 back in the day. This arrangement, however...is a thing of beauty. Though nearly five minutes long, it did not feel repetitive. Mixing was fantastic, as all guitars & bass were distinct. You took something short & simple and made a masterpiece out of it!!

I hope you do finally make it as a composer for games. You will definitely be one of the greats :) x

Oh man. This is such an epic piece for one reason and one reason alone: pure bliss. Of course, every week these are amazing, but this is the first one in a long time that just put a damn goofy smile on my face second after second. Jules, this may have been the best choice as the final weekly cover. Very interested to see next week's video. I was very much looking forward to what N64 credits theme you would record outside (hoping for Majora's Mask), but now we know it's a medley and won't be outside. I'm thinking your 'different' thing will probably be green-screen, but with what, who knows. Since this is basically the end of a 3 year tenure, next week could go many ways, but whatever you do for it, I know it's going to be something special and I bittersweetly can't wait. Also, for those wondering about the solo; 2:13 is the Staff Roll, 2:16 is Bob-Omb Battlefield, and 2:20 is of course the Title theme. And for good measure, 3:16 uses the end of the Staff Roll for the key change. ;)

Hey man, this is amazing work, I absolutely love your song selection! You seem to cover all the lesser known stuff, which I've been waiting for ages for someone to smash out :D I remember reading in one of your video descriptions you said you felt like you might be running out of classic games to cover. Well, just to throw my two cents in, Space Station Silicon Valley had some amazing tunes on it as well as Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon both on the N64. A Space Station Silicon Valley Medley would be incredible; songs like Honeymoon Lagoon, Snow Joke, Penguin Playpen, Rat-o-matic, Fat Bear Mountain and The Engine Room are all five-star material. Some of my favourite cuts from Mystical Ninja were Yamato, Tosa, I Am Impact, Zazen Town, Kai Highway, Folkypoke Village and the main theme. Anyway, amazing stuff, keep it up!
